Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks fsh!

Well, my earlier confidence in that steering cable working, uh, not so much now.

I threw a whole variety of lube on there and it still takes some serious muscle to get it to move. I am thinking my buddy HA was right and the entire cable is pretty well froze up.

Looks like I'll have to cough up some cash for a new one, bummer. Oh well, maybe I can find a good used one for cheap on eBay or something.

It seems I recall someone using transmission fluid to free frozen cables at some point. Might be worth a shot ? Modify a funnel or pop bottle to fit over the end maybe a little duct tape and let the tranny fluid seep in ? Might be good for a few pics anyway:rolleyes: Also how long is the cable? I have to get a longer one for mine anyway as I'm moving console forward a bit might be as stiff as yours but works you can have it if you want it

Gotta love Michigan Jas. The last of the ice finally melted out of the backyard. I almost filled the Offshore with water to check for leaks yesterday. Lisa looks at me as says "you know its 27 degrees out, it'll freeeze in the boat". Maybe I'll wait. Snow forcasted on Saturday here again, yippee. At least the sun is bright. Water test on Saturday, no matter the temp.

You need a new steering cable buddy. Is this going to be a center console? Sorry if I missed it. I may go this route too, when I finish the Offshore.

Good luck hope everyone is well.

Glad you have a smart lady living with you buddy, you'd be a mess:eek:

Yah, I figure just over 100 bux for a new cable, that is ok. Having a good one ripped off of the 4Winns would have been icing on the cake.

Nope, I am pretty well settled on this Jet being a SC. I really think it will suit my needs just right:) She should be a fun rig!

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Just replaced the cable on my 16' starcraft a couple of weeks ago and it ran me about $45-50 for the amount I needed. Bought the coated stuff off a bulk roll at lowes. Converted my closed bow to open bow and had to add a couple rollers under the floor on the port side but it is back together and works just fine.

One of these days I will start a thread and try to show my 1970 starcraft 16' boat that I converted from closed bow to open bow. Already replaced the floor, bow, and transom. My do some work this afternoon with the electrical but not real good at this stuff.

With all the new conversions on my boat I have a few extra pieces that are no longer needed for my boat. Trying to sell them on CL to put more money back into the boat. So far I sold the windshield. I have the big bow light that was on it listed. Need to list the inner rub rail since I replaced it with 1/8 x 1 aluminum angle. Might have some cable steer parts/steering column I might sell but it is not off this boat.

This has been a fun project.

Hmmmm, Id be really interested in seeing your conversion to open bow, thoughts have been going through my mind on my Holiday, bad, bad, jig saw kinda thoughts. And might be interested in that rub rail because of them.

jig saw is exactly what I used to get the job done. 10 minutes with that little tool and no more turning back.

Hmmmm I seem to have passed "no turning back " without a jigsaw is that like being up a creek without a paddle ? Don't cut up the holiday CB Just buy an SS and start another resto:) Jas why don't you do some work on this boat as this thread is quickly catching up to your islander even without progress:rolleyes:

Hey fair go Yooper, Jas's spent all his spare $$ on captain's chairs and the Islander thread is progressing. And the Jet is about to get a new steering cable and side console... It's all good! :)

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

We got hammered with snow yesterday and then a super cool lightning storm last night. Outside of that not a whole lot to report.

I got pretty much everything stripped off the trailer and it's just about ready to be rebuilt...

Then I threw the Jet on top and pushed em off to the side...

OK, probably a while till I get back to either one of them. Sleep tight.:D

OK guys, here is an interesting factoid...

On January 8, 2010 I brought home the Islander.

On January 8, 2011 I brought home the Jet Star.

And on a January 8th many moons ago my momma brought me home. Me and Elvis, and Starcraft, oh yeah....

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Well, shuda been working on the Islander rebuild and shuda been working on the kitchen rebuild but I found myself eyeballing the ol' Jet Star transom...
P1060222.jpg

So, I thought hey why not!

I didn't have any 3/4" on hand but I did have a sheet of 1/2" Auraco up in the shop. So through the table saw...
P1060218.jpg

I also didn't have any Titebond on hand so I grabbed some epoxy and thickened it up with some wood flour. Laminated and clamped them up...

We'll let those cure for a few days and then trim it up.

Cheers guys:)

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Hey Jas,
My plans are to do about the same on mine before I head up to there. At least make a dent before I have to leave it for a few weeks. I am also amazed that you are jumping into 2 restorations...but like with my new ownership of 2 boats, when you are finished...you will have the best of two worlds....

Yah, that's what I am hoping for anyway. I should have just about all my basis covered with the two rigs.

Now, if I could figure out how to justify a 26 footer (and pay for, and store);)

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

OK, transom time.

Layout lines...
P1060223.jpg

Trimmed up, sanded down...
P1060224.jpg

Test fit, butta...
P1060225.jpg

Then the old transom made it's way over to the brush pile (along with the old Jet Star deck, Islander side panels, some kitchen cabinets and flooring, bunch of other stuff) for a red neck burial...
P1060227.jpg

I think I have just barely enough epoxy to seal this up...

Hope you guys are having a great Sunday!
