Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Yah, it's easy to see this motor is a tough piece of equipment but that little direction indicator cap is easily the most fragile piece. Just called em, they are sending me the pieces. If I can't fix it I can take it to a local dealer to be fixed. Extra steps I don't really need but I am in no rush, no biggie.

Can't just take it back to Wally World and exchange it for a non-broken one?

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

A buddy borrowed another friend's Holiday and asked if I wanna help him get it ready for splash

Enjoy working on a real boat buddy;)

Yah, I am sure I could do that. They already sent the parts so I'll see if that is an easy fix. If not I may just return it for another, no biggie either way.

Well, not a lot of progress the past few days - stinkin busy. I have been picking away at a few small things, more rivets in the rubrail channel, JB some small holes here and there, stuff like that.

Goal for the weekend is to 5200 the splashwell, have the hull totally cleaned out, leak test, and gluvit.

Have a great weekend yall:)

OK, I ended up sneaking a little boat time today.

I ran one final pass with the red metal sanding sponge on the rubrail channels, cleaned em up and laid on some Shark Hide. Here is how they are looking these days...

Then I went after sealing up the splashwell.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

I had some gaps between my rubrail channels/trim and the bow deck/gunwales. I think it mainly had to do with all the additional rivets I drove in. I wasn't all that happy with how it looked and was a little afraid junk (leaves and such) would get caught in there. So, I decided I'd squeeze in some 5200. After a top coat of paint it should look a bit more finished.

Hey right on! That might actually have been easier than taking it back to Wally! Sweet! Also nice to know the MinnKota folks treated you right. Just another reason to like 'em.

Minn Kota is great. I have a TM that I want to put a longer shaft on. The guy sort of walked me through what to do, and the parts are a great price. Cheaper from them, than buying from a Marina, or service center.

Jas, this is an awesome project. I really like those boats.

BTW check this stuff out.

Good stuff to cut and ad to the gunnals and bow for steps, non slip pads, and to cover extra holes.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks for swinging through fellas!

OK, a.m. progress.

I thought I'd go after those four holes the previous owner used to mount his bilge pumps, these ones...

So, stainless steel bolts, washers and nylon lock nuts, bedded in 5200...

While I was under there I drilled an extra drainage hole in the keel...

There is one at the bow end but not at the stern. I really don't know why there wouldn't be. Probably a good reason there isn't, but I put one in anyway. I did the same on the Islander, hasn't sunk yet so I should be all right:D

I also got to thinking about the rub rail insert. The original was chewed up a little but I really didn't want to spend the dough on new. I thought I'd go ahead and check to see if the stuff I yanked off of the sacrificial 4Winns would work. Well, it fits!:D

First thing I did was drop it in a bucket of hot soapy water and let it sit for a while...
P1060836.jpg

Rinsed it off and started to install. For the port side I pushed a little ways from the stern...
P1060839.jpg

Then pulled a little from the bow...
P1060841.jpg

Repeat till it was in.

The starboard side wasn't so easy. My rubrail channel was bent a little in some of the areas and it was a bear to slide. So what I did was line it all up, set the top of the rubrail insert in the channel then push/squeeze the bottom side into the channel with a flat head screw driver. Took a while but it worked fine.

I also had to scab two pieces together as they broke coming out of the glasser. So I just mitered the joint so it looks a little neater...
P1060851.jpg

Then I punched a rivet in at each end so they don't go anywhere...

I think that might be my all time favorite picture I've seen on iboats. The irony is just stunning. Did you post that picture in the "stupid human tricks" forum?

The rub rail looks good - looks like progress!

Good on the rubrail! Can I come to your house and rub your head a little for luck? You must have it if the 4 Winns stuff fit, like my wife's grandmother who always won at bingo!

I had planned the same fix as you used for stray holes with the nuts & bolts & 5200 but ended up just using solid head rivets and 5200. Funny how something as simple as rub rail vinyl can cause such a snafu! Congrats on that!!

The irony is just stunning.

Noooo kiddin man! 2" screws through 1/16" of alum, sheesh. Here is what they were holding down. Float switch on the left, bilge pump bracket on the right...

P1040799.jpg

No sealant anywhere to be found either:facepalm:

I can see the fella...

"Man! Sure a good thing I put that bilge pump in there! Look at how much water it's pumping out."

You must have it if the 4 Winns stuff fit

Yah, they aren't brand spankin shiny new but they are great for this little fishing boat eh!:)

Hope yall are having a great weekend. For you guys in the iboats dry dock, our day will come:)

Carefull, you may get 5200 all over your hands doing that......

Good progress Jas....

Thanks Dave! Yah, I'm nearly to the end of my 5200 tube so I just squirted a dab on my toothbrush for my morning routine today:D

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Started working on the mounting holes and backer plates for the Minn Kota. I was pretty happy that I don't yet have that hull painted up as I am certain I would have had a bunch of new scratches.

After that, elbow grease scrubbing the hull for a while. Then a rinse, the Fuerguson helped slosh any just loose swishing back and forth...

P1060857.jpg

P1060855.jpg

Then a final rinse combined with a leak test.

P1060856.jpg

I didn't have any loose rivets or leakers so that was good. I did see just a few spots around the seams that were just barely seeping. No biggie.

And dump. Ryan supervising my work there.

P1060859.jpg

I'll let that dry out for a day or two and on to Gluvit.

One foot in front of the other:)

Looks good! You were lucky with those rivets, I still don't know how mine will be after the Gluvit. I'll have to say, that doesn't even look like a Jet Star any more.

Thanks fellas!:)

Just a step or two closer to the goal anyway.

Speaking of getting close, I am nearly to paint stage. And ya know what, I still haven't picked a hull color:facepalm:

Here is me staring at the cans in the lumber yard the other day...
