These are actually metal emblems that a member had made up a year or more ago.

That looks awesome! Thought of painting the rub rails with vinyl paint?

Thanks.. I decided to leave the red side ones off completely. Don't want to overdo the red, you know ;).

The problem with the white ones is that they shrunk while I had them out and now they aren't long enough, that's why I need to replace them. I really wanted to clean them up so I took a gamble and cut them out under the bow cap. They cleaned up real nice, but was I surprised when I went to put them back! All those frozen hands, sanded fingertips, and splits for nothing! I did it outdoors in March & April.

I wonder if you couldn't run some heat over them (heat gun) and stretch them out maybe? You don't have far there, few inches maybe?

Well, that might possibly work, but then I'd have to fasten the front end in with a visible screw or nut & bolt. I was hoping to go for the more finished look but I'll keep that idea in mind. If I recall, I did try soaking in hot water at the time.

Is this a FAIL?

I did the fuel pump test suggested by parrisw & here's a video. As soon as I unhooked the line from the fuel pump outlet, the gas was pouring out at a fair rate and I hadn't even pumped the primer bulb; but when the motor was turned over, it didn't really seem to me to produce any more volume. What do you think?

Busy day - just scored an anchor for 10 bucks. I haven't picked it up yet, looks to be a 15-pounder. Should hold a battleship; I already have one of these in my SF-14. It's really a little too much, but for the price....

Too hard to tell, I can't see the fuel coming out of the line. Anyway you can get a closer shot to show the fuel coming out of the line? From what I can see though, that's not enough fuel.

Mine were tight when I went to put them back. I just waited for a warmer day and pulled it with pliers and pushed in a new rivit. If it was in once it should go in again. Heat gun is a good idea if you have too.

Getting them back in isn't really the problem. I can shove them all the way forward so the end is hidden under the bow cap, but since there's nothing in the front anchoring it any more, I can't stretch it back so the stern end is under the corner cap. I either need a longer piece or a visible fastener in the front, which I hope to avoid. Heck, maybe throwing them in the oven at the warm setting for a while will help if I go that route. Just have to remember not to forget them though! :D

Crap. Trying to get a closer video, I broke the fitting on the fuel pump. (I'm not going to post that video, it's X-rated!:D) So there'll be a delay while I get a new one. I'm going to see if I can get it locally, otherwise I'll have to order it.

Ouch that sucks. I'm not too worried about a few words. I've heard it all!! LOL. What kind of fitting?

The outlet fitting on the top broke off. On looking at it, I was really surprised how thin the plastic was. I called a local shop and they say to bring in the fitting, they probably have one. Unfortunately, it broke before I could do the test.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

The time has come for a frank discussion with myself. Don't worry, I'm always talking to myself, it comes wth the territory.

I picked up my OMS pump outlet fitting today & asked the owner of the repair shop some questions. I got a price of $419 for a new pump (I see it online for around $340), plus 2 hrs. labor @ $90 per, after a pressure test. He says he doesn't rebuild them because the rebuilds don't last and it still takes 2 hrs. to do the job, so might as well replace it. I don't see a rebuild kit listed, just individual parts and complete pumps. He claims that the ethanol in gas has really done a number on the pumps. I really feel that the rebuild is beyond my capabilities. The most compicated thing I've done to an outboard is replace the impeller in my 2003 Merc 20, and that took a while but went OK.

In further discussion, he said if that didn't solve the stalling problem, the carbs might need to be rebuilt. I don't feel confident doing that myself either, although I did do it to an old 9 1/2 Johnson once. Before storing it 2 years ago, I did fog it best I could, but had no way to turn it over while spraying, so it was kind of a half-*** fogging as far as the carb was concerned. I have to wonder how bad it could be because it does start right up & idles pretty good until it stalls. Rebuild carbs = parts plus 2 hr. @ 90. I have to look into this further too as to doing it myself.

While I was getting my breath back, for fits and giggles, I got brave and asked about replacing the water pump. He charges $70 for the kit and 2 hr. labor @ 90. This is something I might tackle myself, I have to look into that more before deciding.

I have admitted to myself, and now here to you!, that there's no way I'll be on the water this Fall.

So what I'm looking for is thoughts and suggestions on where to go from here with this motor. I'm beginning to wonder if I took an $1800 shafting on this beast, considering this development and how much I've sunk into it so far for controls in the form of all cables, wiring & tach, control, fuel hose, & oil tank. Maybe not considering new 50's go for 4-5,000. But getting closer all the time.

Now that I have the outlet fitting, I think I'll try to get a better video of the pumping volume to post here.....I'll just be way more careful removing hoses!!:D

Sorry for the "No Picture" post, but the only thing I could show you is a picture of me being depressed!! :(

"thoughts"

Well my friend, I think that boats can be quite expensive and very frustrating sometimes.

I sure didn't need to tell you though huh.

What a bummer lake. You sure? You are so close man! Super close!

Maybe not considering new 50's go for 4-5,000.

I've been avoiding totaling up my expenses for this whole project because I'm afraid to know :D, but I needed to know what it has cost me for the 50 so far....and I'm glad I figured that out. Not sure I would buy a bare-naked motor again without any accessories, but here's the breakdown on my total motor costs (all new items except oil tank) so far. Not too bad, I guess, if I end up with a reliable machine that's going to last a long time.

1800 Motor
65 Battery cable
60 Throttle & shift cables
152 Wiring harness
44 Fuel hose
27 Primer & paint
166 Tach/system check gauge
214 Control
31 Operator's manual **highway robbery
70 Oil tank
35 Shop manual

Looks like it runs out on it's own just as fast as it pumps it. I would be very suspicious of that pump.

There seems to be very little difference in fuel flow cranking vs. not cranking. I could save a bundle if I just replace the pump myself. I've pretty much decided that I will do the water pump work. Is replacing the OMS pump pretty much just a matter of remove the old one & put the new one in place? I have the shop manual and it looks like that's about it.

And....the Wal Mart cover doesn't fit, so time to visit the return counter. For the price, it's nicely constructed for my purpose, but the one I ordered using their descriptions was: too wide & too short. Too wide I could deal with, but I want it to cover the motor too, so back to shopping. Trouble is, anything I get longer will most likely be wider too. This was the "Harbormaster Premium 14'-16'" model.
