The funny thing is when I was looking for them, I probably moved the container they were in 3 or 4 times...but I was looking for a plastic bag! Needed to think out of the box!;)

Thanks. At least this time while I was looking, I tried to clear my mind by taking the AC out of the window for the season while I thought about it. If I don't do stuff like that I get locked into it. Yup, I'm beginning to accept stuff like that and actually get more done than I used to in the days when I would be totally stubborn and keep looking and looking until I found stuff...or not :D It's funnier today:).

Need to pick your brains

Need to pick your brains

I need to get some feedback and ideas from you all on my dash. I've thought about it quite a bit and researched materials, after deciding to not remove it to replace it. It comes down to covering it with something and I've had some thoughts but haven't settled on anything. The thickness is 3/4" now, and can't go over 1" thick in order to accommodate the mounting of the system check tach. The max. height in the center is 6-1/4" and it's about 52" wide.

All it's going to have mounted is the steering wheel, tach, a light switch, a bilge pump switch and a 12v outlet.

Here are some thoughts I've had:

1) Cover with same burgundy marine vinyl as my control board. A couple drawbacks I see to that are that I can't wrap the vinyl with out removing the board, which I won't do, so that leaves just gluing it down. Not sure how permanent that would be, esp. at the edges. I also have a concern about the vinyl fading in the sun.

2) I've thought about laminating something 1/4" thick or less over it. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on this. I've looked at 1/4" thick hardwood plywood at Lowe's, but of course it is interior grade, not sure how it would hold up long term. I would cover it with many coats of spar varnish.

I've also found an online source for thin boards that I can cut to the right size, for maybe $15-20, but since it would be oversize shipping, I don't want to get killed on that. I think that could easily double the cost, and they don't give shipping estimates. I haven't been able to locate anything similar locally.

Site is: http://www.thinboards.com/ThinBoardsFrames.aspx

I think it could work to glue on the 1/8" or even 1/4" thick stock though. Again, how do you think that would hold up, coated with spar varnish? They have a large variety of species to choose from.

I've more of less ruled out lexan or plastics because of the cost, and I've never worked with those and don't have the tools, and not sure how I would attach it to the existing board anyway.

Any ideas? I've been mulling this over and trying to think out of the box, looking for a durable and relatively cheap solution. I want to do it right the first time and not have to be messing with it in a year or two. So far, still thinking....Thanks.

I'd be in favor of using the marine vinyl...no UV fading, very tough material, easy to clean and looks nice.

However, as you mentioned, it would be a real challenge to keep it adhered well unless you wrap it around the edges. Maybe a piece of small trim can be added to keep the edges from peeling back?

The anodized aluminum trim pieces that the SS models in the 70s have would work well if you could get a piece in the right shape for your dash.

Sure...add some eggs and bacon and cook breakfast on it on a HOT day!

This summer the topsides of my boat were so hot I couldn't sit on em!

Are you always thinking of food, or taking pics of it??? (If anyone else is his FB friend, you will know what i'm talking about) LOL

Anyway, I like the thin wood of some kind idea with lots of spar varnish. I would think that would hold up well and really look nice. I bet that after all your hard work you will be keeping her protected from the elements when not in use.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Thanks for the dash ideas, I'm going to mull it over some more. I'm leaning toward the thin wood option.

In the meantime, today I started cleaning up the aluminum trim. It's in rough shape but is cleaning up pretty well. I started by using a brass bristle brush to get the dirt and gunk out of the cracks and then used #0 steel wool. On some areas where it is pretty beat up after 46 years of use & abuse, I had to use 150 or even 80 grit sandpaper to work out some of the nicks, scratches and gouges. Overall, I'm impressed with how it's coming along. I'll go over it all again with a finer steel wool to polish it up a little more.

I have to figure out something to clean up the rub rail because I don't want to replace it all.

I'm thinking that I'll probably just remove the side rub rails and leave them off. That'll make the painting a little easier, and I don't think they serve any real useful purpose anyway, located so low.

Hope the weather holds out, I finally feel that I'm making decent progress.

Hey LL something I thought about doing but mine where so hard and brittle that they fell apart when I removed them. I was going to try vinyl trim paint as I have used it on a dashboard and it worked really good and held up well but not sure how it would work in the marine enviorment and it may be a PITA to tape and spray.

I think I saw that somebody else on here used that paint with good results. That's something to think about. I'll have to check bananaboater's thread, I think he had good results cleaning his up. Mine are still pretty flexible.

Hey LL,

I bought this polishing kit from HF for 5 bucks. Used the brown rouge first then the white.

http://www.harborfreight.com/4-piece-buffing-kit-43657.html

This was my result. Shined the aluminum to a chrome like finish. Rub Rail looks the same as do all the rest of my aluminum parts. Best investment I have made for my boat restore.

Cool, I'll check that out, thanks for the tip!

Did you use a drill?

Edit: Weird, I see that you already answered that question, those two replies just came through to me as I was writing my reply, but seems stuff is delayed, check out the date stamps.

Thanks for this post. My rubrail and aluminum channel have been a source of uncertainty for me as what to do with them. Yesterday I found a company that is still making my rubrail insert, and today you showed me how to restore my aluminum channel. Thanks, I am now all set!..moving on to the next issue......
