Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

I made the mistake of slapping some leftover epoxy resin on a 1 square foot area of the new transom. I am going to use laminating polyester for everything else on the project. Since polyester doesn't stick to epoxy very well, how can I prep this area? Will normal sanding me ok?

I KNEW you would like the Easypoxy. How much did that ONE coat take and how thick did you apply?

I only went through a half quart. :) I worked in 3'x3' sections. Put it on a little too thick at first, and found out a little goes a long way. The roller I used was a 4" foam. It feels like it goes on thin at first but levels itself out in a few seconds. Then tipped it back with a 4" foam pad brush.

Yeah, EP likes thin coats to flow out good. You might try getting another roller, wet it with paint then use your fingers to squeeze out all the paint you can and then keep it in a plastic bag while you're not using it to keep it from drying out. Roll on your 3x3 section with a thin coat and then instead of using the foam brush, re-roll it with the squeezed out roller. They call this the roll and roll method. Drewpster used it on his boat and all I can say is W-OW!!!!!!!!!! Micks put on three coats. When I do mine in March I think I'm gunna try and put on and extra couple of coats on the keel since it catches most of the rough stuff from the rollers on the trailer. Something to think about.

It's really looking good!!!!! Keep going. I wish I had a heated work area but I will Next year.

Thanks guys, I'm very happy how well it's turning out. I'm going to do at least two coats. I need to order another quart of white for the small section on the front of the cap, so I'll probably end up throwing a third coat on at least the keel and roller areas. (Good idea Wood) :)

So we're supposed to have rain the next 10 days and the humidity right now is at52%. Think it will be alright to slap another coat of paint on this hull?

Wow.. 1/2 qt ( 1 pt or 16 oz of paint per coat ). Thats just amazing..

I would have blown on 3 coats using up to 3 quarts of Awlgrip and be Done in 1.5 hours :) .. I mean done with rock hard paint done in 2-5 days cure time :) ... Happy rolling ..

The paint looks nice, well done! That was the fun part for me, when the boat started to get painted, and then it all gets put back together. Keep up the good work.

So my motor doesn't have a generator. I haven't really researched to see if one can be added. But...being that I am in solar sales, I'm also on the lookout for cool stuff. I just found this at Harbor Freight.

I could figure a way to mount it on a pole or something and prop it up using a rod holder. I don't know something creative. Anyone else used something like this? I plan on running two batteries on an isolator. One for starting only, and the other for the accessories.

Actually..I was kinda poking at you :) ..

1 pt for that coat seemed very .. um.. low IMO.. because 3 coats ( spray mind you ) would take erm..about 2-3 qts..

I was trying to suggest in a nice way that I didnt think 1.5 qts of roll and tip paint could get you 3 coats... ( 1 pt per coat .. 16 oz .. little more then a beer can of paint / coat ) for that size of boat.

After reading my post it did not tell the thrust of my meaning :) ( It was Not about how I do things ). It was about quantity of paint used in Your application.. :) .

I ripped out the old bunks and prepped some new ones. They're drilled and honed, primed and painted. Carpet goes on tomorrow.
