Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

I was poking around seeing how difficult it would be for the fiberglass to come off and it pulled off by hand for the most part. The transom doesn't look TOO bad.

What do you guys think? Replace those rotted parts on the top only? Or yank the whole thing?

If you are buying wood for it and you have enough to do the whole thing you might as well just redo it all. Thats were I am at too. My part of my deck is fine but after I buy i the wood i need for the bad parts i'll have enough to just do it all. A little more $$ on glass but its worth it I guess.

And I think most people on here will tell you to do the whole thing.:D

The transom needs to be one continuous piece to properly distribute the load. Replace the whole piece. For your sake I hope it's not too bad to get out. Probably would be easier if the whole thing was rotted to mulch.

This is not going to be easy to remove. I am considering leaving it as is since I only have a 30 hp motor.

You are making a error if you do that, do it properly and do it now, even a 30hp engine puts a lot of pressure on you're transom, yours is starting to rot at the top and thats where the most pressure is applied, just my 2cents worth.

Ok sounds good I will do it right. :D

Question. I was looking around on other threads and can't find out if I need to install these transom bolts in the factory locations. Or can I just glue the new transom in and fill these holes?

Thanks for the help guys.

Those look like the standard motor mounting bolt hole locations. If so, I'd leave them there cuz you may not always have a clamp on motor on that thing.

Roger that thanks. I wonder what size motor came on these from the line. Time to do some research.

It was no match for my air chisel and pry bar. And I was able to salvage a decent piece for the template.

Does anyone have advice on removing the ghost image left by the hull decals?

Transom question. Do I need to epoxy and glass both pieces of ply before gluing them together? I'm grabbing the marine grade ply on my way home today. $85 a sheet. I'll have more money in to this transom than the initial cost of the boat!

Others may disagree but epoxy is a fantastic adhesive so I think you should be able to just laminate the two pieces together with epoxy alone.

Made some huge progress sanding the cap this weekend.

Removed the railing first.

There were 3-4 paint jobs on this thing over the factory. We were going through 60 grit pads like candy so I tried some paint stripper. I kept a close eye on it and it ate through a couple layers which made things much easier.

My smurfland friends.

The major sanding is done. There is still some detail sanding left but smurfland should be over with.

I am almost done grinding away the remaining transom too. Will post pics of that when it's done.

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

Finally picked up the 3/4" Marine Ply on the way home today.

Got started tracing out the new transom.

One down, one to go. I still need to finish grinding out a small area of the old one. Goin to test fit this one first then trace the new one when it's dialed in.

I'm making it my mission to get this done while the wife is at work tomorrow. I have the next four days off!

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

Made some good progress today. I got one side of the new transom fitted with just a smidge of room around the sides for epoxy and glass.

Then I got to work on tracing out the second piece.

I have to say it is a little nerve racking at first cutting into a $90 piece of wood.

They lined up almost perfectly.

Had to take a break to head down to the boat shop and pick up some epoxy resin.

My epoxy of choice.

WestMarineEpoxy-1.jpg

I only sealed up one side of each piece to start and joined them together. I figured it would be easier to sand them down to line up perfectly after they are attached to eachother.

That's it for a couple days. Merry Christmas everybody! :D

Looks good... That's one solid hunk of wood there.

I love the 'warning' posted on it, though I DO have to wonder what kind of people you hang out with if it's truly needed... Especially that last line- If it IS really marine ply, it shouldn't have any knotholes in it
