Nice looking project! I'm looking forward to following your thread. What about the transom? Maybe I missed that on your post, but have you checked that? on the drain holes, are you talking about the area in the very front of the bow? I remember talking to Mick about a bulk head that was in the very bow of his boat.....if I recall correctly you can't get access to it without splitting the top off.

Not knowing the hp rating of your boat, it's hard to say if you are going to be underpowered with that Lark on the transom. They are great and reliable motors, but are known as torque/power motors rather than top-end speed motors. Your speed will depend on how much weight you are carrying and how you have it distributed. The hull rating/capacity tag may still be in place if you're lucky...generally attached to the inside transom somewhere. Nice project...keep the pix coming.

I don't want to drill into the transom because then I might find out that it needs replacing. So I'm going to assume it's good and move on. Just kidding :D I'll check that out tonight. I'll take pictures of the drain holes I'm talking about but they are in the back.

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

I posted this in the engine area already but I ran into an issue. My drunk friends were messing with the motor and broke the control lever pin. My new one came today and when I went to put it in something is not fitting right. I can't find a good diagram of how everything goes together in the manual and never saw how it originally was before they went oops and walked away.

Any ideas? It looks like the spring is the issue and I can't figure out what the deal is.

Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the manual for your motor.

PM sent thanks man. Also, I figured out part of the issue. I've never messed with these motors and didn't realize that it will not go full throttle while in neutral. Which explains why my drunk friends broke stuff.

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

Stringer question. I want to add a few stringers because a couple of my fishing buddies are large human beings. Is there anything structural I need to worry about if I put them close to the original stringers? As in if I hit a wave or beach it where the hull didn't have them previously but now there would be stiff support.

And I'll post a couple mroe pics of the progress. I ended up making a motor stand off the edge of my workbench. Free scraps laying around the garage and works perfectly.

The only thing I can see is your making this more structuraly sound adding stringers..

Nothing wrong with that m8 :) ( If im my mind pics are the same as your real pics :) ) .

Dang! I can't get over how cool looking that motor is. I think everything made in 1957 must look cool. Do you know what color you're gonna paint the boat? Sorry about the Epic Fail on th annealing attempt. Keep us posted.

Yeah it would look real nice on a 50's Red Fish. :D

Should be able to make some good progress this weekend.

I was thinking of matching the boat color of blue and white but i might go factory colors.

So I think I figured out the annealing. I read to draw a few lines with a permanent marker on the opposite side that you are flaming. When the marker disappears from the heat (not the flame) then it's annealed. (The color burns off quickly then keep burning it until all of the residue is gone) Crappy phone pic taken last night)

This is for the top of the windshield. I am having trouble figuring out what to do with the bottom part of the frame. The "how to build a windshield" link is different than what I can do.

Here's what I'm thinking. How about using two pieces of flat 1" aluminum strips. So put adhesive backed foam on the hull, then wrap a piece of flat aluminum around the area, then another layer of foam, place the lexan on there, then add another piece of 1" flat aluminum (also foamed), and screw everything in sandwiching the lexan. Any thoughts on this? I can draw a picture if it doesn't make sense.

Here's the bottom windshield frame idea.

Nice... That's why we practice on scrap- You've got to get it REALLY close to the melting point, and aluminum gives you no indication that it's about to melt until it does! Looks like you've got it figured out, though.

As for the bottom, the original 'taylor made' windshields on lots of these boats used a rubber extrusion on the bottom- They sell it here on Iboats-

The narrow part of the channel snaps to the bottom of the plexiglass, and it sits on the deck... Quick and easy :)

I have seen these but thought the actual windshield frame snapped into it. This is much easier. So I would assume pull down the front of the flap, screw it in, and then the flap would cover the screw head? If that's the case should I make the hole bigger than the screw for wiggle room? Cracking the lexan would suck. And thanks for the info. :D

Alrighty then so I pulled the metal top plate off the transom and whammy.....rot. I was avoiding this deliberately and hoping it would be ok but....nope. Ain't nothin to it but to do it.

So the next step is to remove the rub rail and start the splittin'!

Time to pick up a couple of painter's suits because it's glass grinding time. :D

At least I can sand the cap outside now without moving the boat in and out of the garage. The wife lost her parking place but that's alright. Tiz the season to be giving...:p
