Re: 1963 75hp Starflite Rebuild

I'll start to post pics of the motor reassembly on the boat in the order that I completed the steps. I'll post pics from different angles for those who may need a pic of hose routing, wire routing, etc. I know that I ran into an issue or two relating to hose routing and I was lucky that some folks on the forum were able to help me out. Perhaps my pics will help somebody in the future.

First is the exhaust tube and swivel bracket:

...then the flywheel. I had a bit of trouble tightening the nut to spec. I ended up using a ratcheting tie down strap that was about 2 inches wide. At first, I wrapped it around the flywheel once but I could not tighten the nut without the strap slipping. I then wrapped the strap 3 times around the flywheel teeth and I was then able to tighten the nut.

Ya gotta love springtime in Pennsylvania. Could be 80 degrees one day and 20 the next. Yes, that's snow building up on the cover in April.

Re: 1963 75hp Starflite Rebuild

Then I attached the thermostat housing with hoses and the exhaust relief boot. I didn't want to pay the enormous price for the OEM hoses and besides, they were probably manufactured decades ago, which means that they would probably be stiff and generally be in poor shape. I bought two Dayco brand hoses from Advance Auto. I used part #71624 for the starboard side and part #71692 on the port side after cutting to length.

...then the rear exhaust cover and the lower rear motor tray. I should have put these covers on after I attached the lower unit because I dropped a screw between the inner and outer covers above the rubber exhaust ring. It would have been easier to get that screw out with the covers off. But it wasn't too big a deal.

Attaboy! I just love that kind of attitude. Is the timing belt DIY also or an OEM part?

Re: 1963 75hp Starflite Rebuild

I had trouble finding the air silencer pads that line the air inlet boxes that are mounted on the front lower motor tray. I decided to use the same stuff that I am using to line the cowl: Dynamat Xtreme sound deadener. It comes in 1' x 3' sheets and has an adhesive backing. I used an Xacto knife and cut the Dynamat into pieces to completely line the boxes.

Re: 1963 75hp Starflite Rebuild

I bought the timing belt shortly before I decided to rebuild, so it had only a few hours on it. Therefore, I reused the belt. Otherwise, I probably would have tried to find a less costly replacement. It is OEM.

She was starting to look like a boat motor again by this point. That called for a beer--make that 3 beers!
