Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

TC- it does look like a big Christmas present doesn't it. Merry Christmas to me then!

Arch- I wish it were that quick. I have to take the motor to a guy to have him rdeo the wiring, I have to paint, the engine cover from the red back to original, finish up the electrical, paint and put on the rub rail, get a new rub rail insert and install, and a bunch of other odds and ends stuff.

Norm- glad to see you are finally up and running on here! You gotta post your pics! These guys are great- I'm sure they'll be around till next year.

Hey Mick,
The boat looks good in a skirt.
Just think most of the sanding is behind you.
Congrats and good luck with the paint.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

I'm about to start painting. I had to cut out my holes for my rod holders and I'm in the process of taping off for the center line which will be white.

I will peridocally be taking pics and uploading them to my photobucket if you want to follow along(gotta love the iPhone photobucket app). The first pic will be the green tape on the center line.

Here we go- painting will proceed in about 15 minutes!

Thanks Tink!

Well here are the pics from the first coat tonight.

By the way, how do you get rid of orange peel?? I have some areas this time around. Will it go away with the second coat?

I may have to do the second(final) coat during the day- I have about 15 little white bugs dive bombing the paint- pisses me off!!! you can see them on the right in the last pic.

The paint turn out "ok" like I said I got orange peel this time around- let me know what you have to do- wet sand maybe??? if so- how do you do that?

Oh well, one step closer!

Thanks- Goodnight:D

Looks great mick!

The orange peel. Get some 1000grit sand paper, and a bucket of hot water. Use the paper on a sanding block (hand sand) and then dip in the water and sand away!

If you wet sand the cap between coats, it will really help that paint pop!

Great job, and keep up the good work!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

****CAUTION****

Pettit does not recommend sanding between coats with anything higher than 440 wet....they actually recommend using 320 wet

I actually sanded with 120 slightly wet and and then to 320 wet...but i'm also on my 4th coat of paint, since the 120 takes alot off...and from what i've been able to tell...alot of the orange peel comes when i apply the layers too thick.

this was all from apply the paint with the roll and tip method, using Interlux Brightsides

Looks real nice Mick. I'm not sure about that paint, but automotive paint you can wet sand out orange peel on the top coat. I did that to mine in a couple of spots with 1500, then buffed it.

What about thinning it down. I know Brightsides you can do that which I plan to do this time. Or perhaps putting on thinner coats. Looks good though, mick.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Hey guys- thanks for the comments. I will be researching wet sanding these next couple days. Do you guys think wet sand in between each coat or just after the final coat? I was thinking I would do just two coats of blue but now I'm thinking if I am going to be sanding then maybe 3 coats or more.

The bottom if you remember turned out real nice after 2, and then I ended up doing a 3rd coat anyways but I didn't have any orange peel.

I won't be on the boat until maybe Thursday night. We are in our last week of school and I got a couple of nights of lesson plans yet but after that- back to full time on the boat every night:D:D:D:D:D:D

manufacturer says not to wetsand final coat, just inbetween coats.

after atleast a week, you can buff and wax the final coat.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Mrdjflores- yeh I have the PDF file for easypoxy and it doesn't say anything on there about wetsanding at all. It just says about regular sanding in between coats.

What is the difference between regular sanding and wet sanding? If I could avoid wet sanding I will.

Digging the color, the white bugs do pop out on it though. Next time try one of the insect repellent candles. I have a device that protects up to a 30' area that uses a butane cartridge and a pad that is saturated with repellent. I had to pack it up and cannot remember the name of it sorry.

It is something similar to this .

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

wetsanding will give a more uniform, smooth finish before you apply the paint...

to see the difference, get you a piece of regular 150 grit...tear it in half and find a scrap piece of wood, fiberglas or something...

dry sand one section with the 150...then wet sand another section with 150...
you will be surprise with the outcome

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks insanity- I didn't even think of using candles. I have about 15 of them for my back yard- looks like I'll be bringing some in the garage:D

I just got off the phone with pettit technical support. They recommend dry sanding with 280-320 grit paper in between coats. They also said I could try thinning the paint down as well about 10%.

So I will try the dry sanding first and see what kind of results I get. I'll start with a 320 grit in a small area and go from there.

How do you thin down the paint? Acetone? Thinning the paint scares me a little:eek:

I would ask them Mick, every paint has a specific thinner. Some of the thinners also come in "temperatures", automotive thinners are that way. You buy different thinners depending upon the air temperature.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

You may have gotten a little texture, but I think she's looking pretty good! When I sprayed the white on mine with the Easypoxy, I had quite a bit of texture. I had thinned it to spec (5-10%) and was spraying at the recommended setting of 15 psi. When I went to spray the off-white, I experimented with not thinning at all and spraying 20+ psi and it went on perfectly. This was with a 1.7 tip so that may have had some effect... Cheers- Tom
