Mick looking real good. For my transom I put 2 layers of cloth wrapping the top but wet out with the seacast and tucked deep into it. Too late for you to do that now I know but just saying. Are you predrilling the seacast for the floor?

Yeh- I can't wait for glass work to be finished!!! I have to do the stringers, tab the deck in, and some odds and ends stuff on the top- the end is in site for glassing!

Skibum- I will be pre-drilling and countersinking all the screws.

Tonight I got the stringers wrapped in glass. I used two layers of cloth and it looks good.

Here is prepping for the glass

Looks real good Mick. Have you decided how you are going to do the foam? I know you were looking at different scenarios of where to pour and where to put vent holes.

No I haven't figured it out yet. Once I get the deck down I can make the marks were the stringers are and then I can see everything and figure it out from there. I'm pretty sure I got a good idea how its gonna work. I've been playing around with it and I'm getting a good "feel" for it and how much to use in each cavity.

Great looking stringers. It feels real good to get the deck down and be able to walk on a nice solid floor for once.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks guys for the comments- they are appreciated!
Pauly- yup first time glassing. I didn't have a clue what it was before I started-let alone what polyester resin and hardner was. Luckilly I started on the hull and put a couple layers down there so I got alot of practice right away.
Hopefully someone takes something away from what I'm doing here- that's the beauty of this forum. I would not have been able to undertake this project without these guys and this site.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

I put another layer of mat down on the stringers tonight because I had leftover stuff. I got my pieces of biax cut for the transom cap but ran out of hardener so back to the boat store tomorrow.

Tomorrow I am going to get the deck in the boat and run some chalk lines for the stringers so I know where I need to drill for my foam and so I know where to put my screws to lock the deck down. I got my powerpoint stuff done for my class for the rest of the week so it's back to the boat at night.

I'm hoping I will be ready for the foam this weekend!

Here's a find I got off of ebay. The owners manual for my evinrude starflite motor! Pretty cool!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Well, tonight I just had plans on sanding the deck, prepping and marking my lines to locate the stringers, and having it ready to go for tomorrow so I could install the deck.

Then before I knew it I was gluing and screwing it down!

Yup, got the deck in tonight and I'm still smiling ear to ear at 20 of 2 in the morning! Still wandering too- what the hell am I gonna do next after the deck and foam is done? I've practically been working towards this for a couple months now and the end is almost near that the deck will be foamed and sealed up!

Anyway here are the pics and a **********VIDEO***********

After sanding I needed(prob not necessary since I have a shiplap joint but I figured a little extra support wouldn't hurt) to put a piece of glasses ply under the two pieces of deck because the deck didn't fall out on the cross stringer. Looking back I should have moved that stringer up a little- oh well, still stiff as hell.

I pollied, screwed, and then glassed over the screw heads

This is where I said screw it, I'm putting the deck in tonight

100_1039.jpg
[/IMG]

I used stainless screws #12's ranging from 1" to 2" and PL Premium glue. Everything was countersunk too.
Not the sharpest idea but I am working alone so... it worked!

I glassed and pollied the shiplap joint and extra support I put in too and then screwed it in from the top also

Oh yeh, before I started gluing and screwing I marked all my stringers with a chalkline and then with a permanent marker so I knew where they are for screwing and for drilling holes for the pourable foam.

And the finished product after drilling, countersinking, and screwing

I also filled the sides with some more glue and the shiplap joint as well. I'll clean/sand it up tomorrow

Here is my question, and you will see it in the video also.
Thinking ahead 50 years down the road- my recessed screw heads- instead of just filling them with polly and glassing over them- what if I fill the recesses with wax and then glass over them? This way I can document where the screws are located and if the deck (since it is the only wood in the boat) ever has to come out when I'm dead:) they can be easilly located and removed rather than someone just ripping everything out and possibly doing damage to the seacast stringers? Will this make the two layers of glass I plan to put down structurally un-sound? I don't think it will but I wanted to get your opinions before I go that route.

OK- here is the video- if it doesn't upload you can find it on youtube under "Boat Deck Installed"

Gotta go to bed now! Good night

Oh yeh, the deck is solid! The foam is just going to give me piece of mind and make it even firmer- if that is even possible. Still grinning ear to ear:D

Fantastic work. You have, without a doubt, the most ROCK SOLID build on all of iboats.

Mick, looks great! I'm not sure on your screw head question....if you do glass them, it should prevent the screws from backing out. But I'm not sure if that will be an issue. I'm guessing if the floor needs replaced, that getting the screws out won't be that big of an issue in the grand scheme of things.

Way cool! Nice work. Another idea on covering/marking the screws...how about some 3M 4200 sealant? It is tough, but removable if necessary.
