Well, I did have a chance to hook up the muffs this evening and start her up and run her for a few minutes. I pulled the top hose where it connects to the vernatherm housing and... NO WATER!!! It's supposed to look like this...

Mine stayed BONE DRY!!!
Guess that means she's NOT Pumping Water??? I'm a bit confused. Something must have broke cuz I'm pretty sure she was working last year. Don't think an impeller can wear out that fast can it??? Heck it's got less than 2 hours on it!!!!

I'll pull the lower unit this weekend and see what's going on

Wood I couldn't determine if it was pumping water on it's own or if all that was from the pressure coming from the hose. Got a lazar temp gun?

I am pretty sure when hooked up to hose the hose pressure will push the water up without help from impeller. my guess is some type of blockage you'll know more when you take it apart. You can tell by the look on Pierce's face he enjoys hanging with PoPo

Hmmm, not sure about the hose pressure. I did read online about checking the tubes for blockage so I'm for sure gunna do that!!! Like I said, I'm just discombobulated about all this cuz I'm 99.9% certain all was well last year. But...Like I say, I AM an Old Dumb Okie so there's No Tellin what's gone wrong!!!!:D;) We'll find out soon enuf and learn from it!!!!

That 30hp I just purchased wasn't pushing water thru the tell tale either and when I pulled the pump the impeller didn't look bad. Changed it anyways as I always do will a new outboard. In this case I put it in a barrel of water with the hose running so I could be sure it was pumping water on it's own and not because of the water pressure from the hose. Also shot it with a lazar temp gun.

You seem to be getting a lot of water from the hose you pulled.

I know. The 1975 50hp I had didn't have one.

Also at this point anything with more than 3 cylinders is above my pay grade! Good luck to you Wood.

Wood, just looking at the video you provided, it looks similar to my '76 40HP...somewhat. I didn't have a pee tube either. But I installed one at the very top right near the welch plug. Seems on mine they machined a boss port but never drilled it through into the water jacket. So I did. And it works perfectly too. Of course I had the head off when drilling and I could easily see where it was going as well. So that helped. Just saying.

Yeah, I'm wondering if I should/could attempt drilling for the plug without removing the head???:noidea:

Once again, we have affirmitive confirmation that I AM an Old Dumb Okie!!!! I removed the lower unit from the Johnson and disassembled the waterpump thinking I would find that the having run her dry a few times and on the muffs for a while that I had evidently worn her out pre-maturely. Or I thought I had put her in backwards. ( I had heard that was prolly not the problem cuz even if you do that when the motor starts they will "Self Correct themselves usually). As you can see she was just fine and the key was fine too and she was spinning and working just fine. Sooo... the only other possible issue was blockage in the water tubes. NOPE both of em perfectly clear. That left only one possibility...I had not ensured the two water tubes were connected properly on the install the last time. My water pump has two tubes where most only have one. I thought I had em connected but...Guess NOT!!! I went ahead this time and replaced the VernaTherm (Thermostat) and put in a new impeller too. I Triple checked the watertube connections when I stabbed the unit back in and am 1000% certain they are in place this time sooo I'm certain that with them connected and with a new thermostat, I should get proper water circulation this time. I'm hoping to get to the lake tomorrow to check her out. Weather is supposed to be nice so I'll keep you posted. I ordered all the parts to install the Pee Hole for the motor so when they come in I'll be doing that too so I'll know for sure when she's pumping good.

I dunno bout all that dumb okie stuff but I say your genius for giving me the idea to use the workmate thing that I've never used to hold my lower unit the next time I do an impeller.

Good luck for tomorrow.

Nothing dumb about being sure it's working properly!
It's not like you can just pull over and walk home!!! Save your parts wood it's good to have spares. I'm with TDF on the work mate! I love mine!!

So wood that outboard didn't come with a tell tale! I would put one on as well. My force doesn't have one and it just kind of dribbles out the exhaust and it doesn't tell you very much on how the water is cerculating. Take care and I'll be watching to see how.she did tommorow!
