I've heard of putting BBs in a metal tank and shaking them around to clean things out.

Hey DH, Sanding the inside of the hull would be a lot of work. I used Marhyde Aircraft stripper to remove the foam residue and glue, and it came out pretty good, you could then use some Aluminum brightner to shine it up a little.
Glen

Okay I'll look into that. Depends on the cost of the Marhyde haha.

I have a good amount of BB's. I'll research into that idea. I just really want to get any potential gunk out.

DH - MagnumDeke used some AL cleaner that made the hull look almost brand new, check his thread. Tank cleaning - use some BBs, steel shot, nuts, and/or bolts with some Varsol or just about any solvent including diesel. Shake and check, shake and check, until clean. Or you could do this

Antique tractor tank clean up trick, put in a few handfuls of pea gravel/ BB's/ steel shot and some pb blaster, set in back of truck or car and drive around for a week. rotate the tank everyday so a new side gets cleaned.

Re: 180 SS New to the Forums.

Thanks guys for all the good suggestions. I do really appreciate them.

I am going to have my friend inspect my tank to be sure it really needs the inside cleaned (besides any liquid residue from the old gas.). He has a fiber scope that lets him poke around in tanks and engine areas.

The outside is looking nice and shiny. Next on the list is the boat hull.

Not tonight though... Going to get some good sea food at a local crab shack called Captain Kats. I love Snow crab (opilio) legs.

to clean inside of hull around rivets for gluvit, try an angle grinder with a 6" wire wheel, and a large bottle of ibuprofen for later. you can touch up missed spots with drill with wire wheel. all shineeee

Re: 180 SS New to the Forums.

A small update today from yesterday.

I went ahead and did some more OB work. I attached hoses to the fuel pump, removed the old VRO line to avoid any unneeded hoses.

I attach the battery and do a pre gas turn test. (Anxious!) and she sputters sounding like an OB. Nice!

Dad gets about 2 gallons of gas ready with the oil mix. I prime the ball. Hop back in the boat go to start the OB. Murphy runs by and slaps me on the forehead. There was a reason the previous owner loosened the starter motor. The starter motor spins but she doesn't get a grip. We know the engine turns by hand spinning the flywheel.
Looks like another 150-200 part. Anyone ever rebuild a starter?

Look in the 'ol yellow pages or equivalent and see if there's an auto electric place in your area. They can generally rebuild anything. Since you've got the time, that may be the way to go as opposed to buying a whole new one.

try the cheap plan first...old grease uniformly turns to not-grease. not-grease on the bendix drive could be enough to keep it from moving into engagement with the ring gear. try cleaning and re-greasing before you drop $ on it. if that don't do it, use EZ's plan....those types of places tend to be a lot cheaper than anything with "marine" in the name

With regards to the hull failure in your pics, I am not an expert, nor do I play one on the internet, but
from the pics, it appears to be from direct impact versus original problems these hulls had with damage
sustained from pounding to the chines around the console area. Most of those were lateral cracks on the
outer strake versus the longnitudinal fissure on yours. Looks like the dent/impact fatigued the area and
stress later enhanced the split.

Most aluminum hull experts will advise an exterior fix as your main goal(patch bigger than the damaged area).

After that, any internal work becomes a bonus.

In general, the rivets near the damage appear to be intact, another indication a direct impact(shoal/stump)
was the culprit.

In addition, your hull is much newer than 70s SS models evidenced by the fact yur sides/chine is one piece attached to the bottom whereas the older ones are joined by a full outer strake riveted to the side and the bottom.....huge difference

I believe you are correct. I was told by the owners son that the hull did hit either the trailer or the dock and it caused some damage. This was done by the owners ex friend. Only an ex after he hurt the boat.

Bara

I watched a youtube on how to take apart the starters and I planned on poking around as you suggest. Thank you. I figure the worst that can happen to a non working starter is it could continue not to work.

Ez

I'll keep an eye open for an electric motor repair shop if my first attempts fail.

Things that occupy my time away from my boat!

It looks worse than it really is...

Good riddens to this horrid hitch

After grinding off any surface rust, I added a rust binding primer thanks to my Dad's suggestion.

Must fix the chariot to get Tinderella to the ball err I mean lake and I don't want my truck turning into a giant pumpkin.

I add her new fuel pump, paint her frame tomorrow and get the new Curt hitch on Saturday. I cannot wait to be done with distractions from my boat!

Also thanks to my Dad for putting on a turn buckle for the trailer. I won't need to use a bow tie down strap with this baby. Pics tomorrow.

I still need to think on it, as the voting board didn't like that name.

If someone else wants Tinderella then go for it as I am leaning towards something that has a nickname added. You know those moments where you need to talk sweet to get what you want? Like an engine started? :p

Re: 180 SS New to the Forums.

So the storm of life has slowed down enough to actually take a shot at getting back on to the big summer project. At least the one that's important to me anyway.

Trucks done and fuel gauge works. Good times for me as I don't have to live and die by the odometer. New hitch attached so my boat stays with the truck. :p

Back to what's important.
As I stated before... After connecting everything and attempting an engine run I had starter issues. I heard Murphy over my shoulder saying "that's your problem right there." Thanks Mr. Obvious.

Damn Magnet termites!

GlsAPsk.jpg

So I ordered the new starter and the engine actually tried to turn over. I'll just need to rebuild the carbs so fuel/lube spreads to the pistons. Hopefully pulling the engine tomorrow. Building a stand so maintenance can continue. Possibly some paint in the future.

Trailer work below.

Re: 180 SS New to the Forums.

Between my Dad and the new local Harbor Freight opening. He's become the bearer of gifts.

Dad decided to take upon himself to replace the boats original (previous owner) turn buckle. Unlike bow tie down straps these don't tear/snap as easily. So it will help keep the boat from bouncing, and I think it adds a nice touch to an all metal environment.

The trailers winch was in need of replacement. She always brought cold food and had a bit of an attitude . She's since been replaced with this model.

Note the lovely addition of a spare holder. Now to find a 15 inch spare trailer wheel + tire.
Also the replacement of the old wheel jack. I guess my Dad thought the chance of tetanus was to high with the old one. No fun at all! ;)

Thanks in large to my Dad things are looking better with the trailer.

Re: 180 SS New to the Forums.

Another update. I recently purchased Coat It as it appears to cost considerably less than Gluvit. I don't usually like making a price my major buying point. Both my Dad and I researched about the product and couldn't find anything wrong with Coat It.

Can't wait to get the OB pulled, the slice in the hull welded and then begins the big time cleaning of the boat. Again... My maple trees like to shed leaves even in summer.
Anyone here try using brake cleaner to prep the areas prior to applying Gluvit or Coat It?

Yeah, me too. I brought the starter to my Jeep GC in and they went through it for $40, even put on a new solenoid. My in-laws boat needed a starter this spring, same place had the correct marine version on the shelf. Love the mom and pop places...

Re: 180 SS New to the Forums.

DH - Is your birthday or sumpin'? Dad came through big time on the trailer goodies. From the looks of the worn paint under the bow stop, there was a lot of boat/trailer movement in the past.

Most guys prep for Gluvit or Coat It (which from comments in resto threads are both good stuff 'cept CI is cheaper) by pressure washing, cleaning the limber holes, PWash again and the final step is a 50/50 rinse with white vinegar and water.
