Hmmm is this a trick question?;) I would say 1 gallon epoxy would cover as much as 1 gallon of epoxy.....but I always thought a ton of bricks was heavier than a ton of feathers..

I used the bondo poly..so comapring that to the epoxy...I thought the epoxy spread better...+ no sanding.

Plus epoxy is easier to work with, as far as drying time. Also way less odour. And epoxy is stronger.

I just re-read that info on the epoxy. It says 1 gallon is 59 dollars. But that is actually 1/2 gallon of resin and 1/2 gallon of hardener. Maybe not so cheap after all.

hmm.. 1-1 mix..
1/2 gallon of epoxy is no good without 1/2 gallon of hardner..
Combined that yields 1 gallon of usable material...so $59.00 per gallon..Less expensive as you buy more

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

My epoxy is supposed to be on my porch tonight when I get home from work. Now the fun begins! I have a three day weekend so I hope to get a lot done. I want to get the transom finished completely and all the deck boards sealed with 2 coats. I may paint the topside while I'm heating the garage at least until I run out of paint and have to order some more.

I was just wondering, Did you pre-drill the rivet holes in the deck?? I am going to do that before I epoxy coat it. I figured on going 1/32 to 3/64 over size. Did you find any spec's on the ACX acuply plywood for glue?? I went to there web site and all I found was a bunch of run around when it came to what type of glue they used as I never found any thing in concrete!! I guess I am really cautious on this as I know exposure 1 glue does not hold up. I opted for APA ratings. Do not forget to pre-drill your transom drain holes in before you epoxy!! Speaking of drain holes, Did you save your drain tubes or are you going to replace them?? I would love to be as far as you are on my boat but I am making some extra cash working on snowmobiles so the boat is still in the freezer!! Keep up the great work!!!

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

Been real busy on the boat last night and today. I'm a quasi-gov't employee so I'm off today :)

Last night I fit the transom in the boat. Had to break out the belt sander to get the fit perfect. While I was at it I did some sanding on all the deck boards. Not sure if that was necessary but I thought I'd just smooth them out a smidge. I angled and rounded all the edges for a better fit. I laid out my ski locker door trim and cut out for that so that's ready to go. I officially decided to abandon my sorta-infloor gas tank idea. I measured how far out into the boat it would come and it turned out to be fairly ridiculous. The 8 inches I had to add to accommodate the knee brace just pushed it out too far into the cockpit. Even though the box I'm going to build for a casting platform would cover it, I decided it was just a dumb idea and will be installing the tank above deck under the splashwell as it was OEM. Now I'm sorta wishing I'd just kept the original steel tank instead of giving it away. However who knows really what condition the inside of that tank was in so maybe it's for the best.

Before I went to bed I epoxied the two transom half together. This morning I got up and cleaned all the sawdust off the floor and set up all my deck board to be coated. The epoxy was very nice to work with. My heater is keeping it in the upper 60's-70 out there so it should set up nicely per the instructions. Pauly I haven't decided on that cloth or mat I'm putting in the top deck. Anyone have any advice? I may start a new thread in resto asking about that.

You can see my transom is sitting up on top of the boat clamped.

Here's the piece with the ski-locker cut out. I added some support to the thin edges around it.

I did not pre-drill the rivet holes. I figure it will be covered with glass after being installed so that would be kinda overkill. I was planning on pre-drilling my transom holes but had forgotten until you just now reminded me  So I will be doing that tonight probably. I saved my drain tubes in order to find replacements but they are pretty well shot. I haven't found any specs on the aruco ply. I did read on here that it may be a softer wood or something and not as good. However! it seems to have way less voids than the regular exterior ply I used for the deck. If you seal it up real well I'd definitely recommend it.

Allright..lookin good Jeremy...your pics look awfully familiar..altho I dont see any blue chairs. We are just about at the same point in the resto. My boat is painted but still turtle shell up. this weather is great..about 52 here in CT.

Are you riveting the deck? what amount of grab ya think for the rivet.have to be an inch i would think to set the ply and make the stringer?

Yes I'm planning on riveting the deck. In fact I just picked up a cheap rivet gun at HF while I was there getting a pile of cheap paint brushes. Not sure yet what rivets to get. I know North Beach riveted his deck maybe he has an idea.

This is what I used successfully with a 3/8 decking covered with thick vinyl.

40253 Marson Large Flange Rivet ABL6-8A -- 3/16 dia. w/Grip .376 to .500 Alum-Alum ( 500 Pcs/Bx)
$44.98 + shipping from blindrivetsupply.com

Be sure they are all aluminum, otherwise popped off part will rust.

Still have about 400 left.

ezmobee,
Everything is looking great. I like the idea of adding extra support on the thin edges. I'll be doing the same thing on mine.

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

J,
I agree w/jspano-rivitsinstock.com. If you're going 1/2" plywood you'll need 1/4" all aluminum with a 1/2" to 5/8" grip range.

I used 10 oz cloth from Merton's along with a 3 gallon kit of epoxy-that's two gals of general purpose epoxy and 1 gal of medium hardener and the stuff worked great. I think I only used about 1/2 of what I bought, but since I'm about to start on another 22 footer in the next couple of weeks, it's all good!

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

Ok, on the rivets....I had already planned on going with rivetsinstock.com. I need to know exactly what to order (as I'm dumb). I'm riveting 3/4" plywood to my ribs and stringers. I'll probably order a 100. I'm thinking I want the 100? Countersunk Head Rivets. Sound right? What size do I want? Talk to me like you'd talk to your mother if you wanted her to order these for you :p
