Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

HA,
I had 0 (zero) foam/flotation in my rig. i read here that a few guys put noodles under the Gunwales. Seems they would fit perfectly.

I have made half dozen calls to pool stores locally and they have none in now, they say end Jan early Feb. I am going to price out the sheet foam and see where I stand vs Noodles.

EZ Your boat is looking great. Was your trailer always bunks or did you convert it?

It had 2 roller bunks on it but they were shot. The keel rollers were all in pretty good shape.

While we're on the topic...did you guys have foam under the gunwales? Mine did and I'm curious if it was factory or previous owner'd. Can't tell since all the factory foam was removed and replaced with nothin under the deck.

I am leaning toward blue foam sheets from Homie Desperate but I will be tuned in to see what you guys find out for cost, quantity, etc. Thanks for staying multiple steps ahead of me(I do make that part easy by working slow):D

i dont think foam under the gunwales was a factory thing. it was probably added by someone.

Jeremy,
I am going to pick up my Rivets from Grainger today. I ordered them yesterday.
I bought 3/16 aluminum wide flanged (or flanged) 1" grip. My boat didn't have 1/4" rivets in the floor. I brought one in and it matched closer to the 3/16, actually that looks even a bit bigger. I had to purchase 250. I may use 100? If you would like what I have left over let me know.

That would be awesome! I'd happily PayPal you cost + shipping. Thanks!

I put my second coat of resin on the bottoms of the deck boards last night. The look like bar tops! Shame no one will ever see it :p I've used a ton of resin though. Gallon and a half already just on the bottoms. Haven't even done the transom yet. I'll have to order more to finish the tops plus the layer of glass. I'm afraid that glass layer might really eat up the resin. I'm going to email Clark Craft today and see what they recommend as far as glass.

wetting out the glass will totally use more than what you have used before. when i was doing mine, it seemed like i went through barely any to coat the bottoms and coat the transom, but when i got to the deck i started flying through it!

I'll let ya know how these work out.

Yeah its a shame that the decks look so good..and noone will get to see them. Yeah yours is an 18' so ya used a bit more than me. I ordered another gallon lsat wednesday..its not here yet!! I have to give em a ring...

The website states the 6 0r 7oz clth they have works perfectly with this epoxy. I havent figured out my "yardage" yet..I know sq ft..have to break down to yardage...Hey Andy...yours is a 16' what did you use for Yardage on your deck?

EZ..one of my deck boards may have sucked up so much resin from one side..it came out the other side!!! Its actually leaking out the backside and the top piece looks almost dry. This happened 3 days ago..about 1 week after i coated ..Strange..

Guys, all of those polystyrene products will turn to nothing if left exposed to UV.

And you'll probably have that migrating/seeping epoxy issue if you're not using marine grade. Remember the other plywoods have lots of voids that the stuff can run through.

NB,
Mine will be painted with a non skid. the transom will be painted as well

The ACX I used had no voids..but the bottom side did have knots. The seeping came through the knot side from the smooth side. The smooth side was sucked in. 1 piece out of 4 did that. The epoxy we are using is designed to be sucked up but I think that Auraco (?) plywood may be a soft wood. Anyways they are completely sealed and very stable.

im not sure how much i used... i didnt buy a big roll, i used the small packages that you can get at auto parts stores and at wally world. i didnt have any supplier locally, plus i was on an extreme budget. if i remember correctly, i used 12 packages to cover the whole deck.

What you talkin' bout? There ain't no sun under my deck....

You mean you've decided against going with a glass-bottom for shipwreck viewing?!?:p (my cousin used to run a glass-bottom rig for diving and stuff, pretty cool stuff)

Don't get excited E:)

Sombody posted that the noodles withered away to nothing when left out exposed to the elements. My statement meant that all the styrenes do that. The pink, blue, and white expanded all will degrade rapidly when left exposed. They will all do just fine if covered. I personally don't like the white stuff because it's open cell and will absorb moisture if exposed to water/heat. as far as the noodles, I don't know what they're made of.

With the wood, I would imagine the cells are more porous on the stuff you're using versus the Douglas Fir. If that's the case (and I don't know if it is) then the plywood you're using may be soaking up way more of the epoxy.

Has any of you looked at what type of glue is used in the acx and if the epoxy will attack the glue if the wood is soaking up a ton of the epoxy?

I did a little research. Sounds like that could be a problem with interior ply but exterior should be ok.

Deck sheeting looks great EZ, but what or where did I miss the train switching tracks from the blue sheet foam to the noodles? Some new discovery I missed?
