Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

Jeremy, just getting caught up here... good progress. did you paint the trailer at all before putting the boat back on it??

I didn't paint the trailer at all. That's a project for another day. It's not in too bad of shape. If I hadn't moved the axle back you wouldn't even be seeing really any rust.

Ok, on the rivets....I had already planned on going with rivetsinstock.com. I need to know exactly what to order (as I'm dumb). I'm riveting 3/4" plywood to my ribs and stringers. I'll probably order a 100. I'm thinking I want the 100? Countersunk Head Rivets. Sound right? What size do I want? Talk to me like you'd talk to your mother if you wanted her to order these for you :p

What he said..

J,
You still just need 1/4" all aluminum blind rivits. Grip range should be 3/4" to 7/8". They pull down tight to the plywood so no need to worry about countersinking before you install fabric and epoxy.

Hope that helps!

Understood..Thanks NB

Jeremy check out item 814-aal 1/4" with .751-.875. I may go to the .876- 1 due to the thick epoxy I have on the deck already. rivetinstock.com

what do ya think?

It's OK Andy! Remember when I did my little project there was no one available to ask so I just called the number on their website and explained to the salesman what I was trying to do and he recommended the rivit.

"Pauly I haven't decided on that cloth or mat I'm putting in the top deck. Anyone have any advice? "
ez, On my Larson I used fiberglass curtains I found at a discount store for my matting. Worked really well and cost very little.

You go first....I haven't gotten to it yet as I have more epoxying to do then I need some cash to order my pool noodle flotation. I did check out the part number and it looks to be what we need. I also wonder if we should get the longer ones.

Last night I sanded all my coated deck boards in preparation for a 2nd coat. I also threw the boards in the boat for a little bit to check where my pedestal seats well go. Then cut two backing blocks out that will be mounted under those locations for added strength and fastening "meat". I have another commitment tonight but Thurs night I'll throw on the next coat of epoxy.

EZ..I will go with the 1"....hey ya know ya didn't have to sand in between coats..
"Easily applied by brush or roller. Fail safe mixing system 50/50. Adds tremendous strength. No sanding required between coats. Sands easily for final finish. Low maintenance surface. Remains extremely flexible when cured. When cured, is not affected by gasoline, oil, salt water and highly acid resistant."

Where ya getting the pool noodles at this time of year? I have a call into Namco here in CT. They are checking a few stores for me.

Mika..never heard of Fiberglass Curtains...

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

I didn't know if I did or did not need to sand between coats. I swear I even looked on the site and didn't find that line. However, I had a lot of bubbles and some high spots that I certainly didn't mind knocking down. It didn't take me long with a random orbit sander. I think it was a good idea actually.

I found a couple web sites that sell cases of 24 noodles......for more than I want to pay. However the sheet foam from Lowes isn't exactly cheap. I figure I'm looking at $150-200 either way. I like the noodle idea better anyway.

I'm highly irritated that it is looking like lack of available finances may put a hold on my project. I have $3k from a freelance project invoiced and when I get it this whole thing will be more than financed but until then it's slow going. I don't have an extra $200 a week for all the stuff I need. Seems like everything is $200.

Ez, great job so far:D I have to let my ignoritism show through. Are yall talking about pool noodles as in the kind kids hold onto at swimming pools? I have a few of those and they turn to dust after a while, maybe due to UV (sunlight) ? Are they oil/gas resistant? It is a very interesting concept. I hear ya on the money Ez, we are all there:(

Haven't been on the Resto side in a while figured I would pop my head in to see how your doing. Your project is coming along real nice :) its gonna be real sweet when she's finished.
With your foam if your looking at 150-200 why aren't you just using 2 part pour ? I think I only spent like 100-150 for mine

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

I have "tear drops" on one side of each deck that I will need to sand down before installing it.

tell me about it..I have a laundry list of essentials and most are 150- 200.

I have been laid off for a month it ends Jan 31. I planned on getting 80% of this completed. The snow plowing $$ is cash..and that was going towards the boat..well where the %$#** is the snow?? So I am creeping here as well.

I plastic Rustoleumed my leaning post/livewell white..looks real clean now. I have to do some work to the cc as well. I will add some pics to my resto by the days end.
hey..they sell those noodles for $1 at Ocean State Job Lot here in town...but not untill May..much too late.

Pretty sure if they're disintegrating it is due to UV. I have a couple we've had for 3 years but they've usually been under our deck so they're in fine shape. From the little I've read I believe that polyethylene foam is gas/oil resistant.

Because in the years I've been on this site everything I have seen about that foam is a horrible nightmare! Not to mention it would surely clog all the little drainage-ways in my boat's ribs.

Gotcha, that makes sense :) . I might have messed up, I used an HVAC approach and ran tubing from area to area, and did my best to hermetically seal the foamed areas. I can see your point and were I might have problems in the future

EZ did you look at these noodles?

24 for $57 They come in different sizes, I think that the smaller the better since you can fit more under the deck. Do you think 48 of these would do it?

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

HA, that's one of the 2 places where I've found the cases for that price. The other place has cheaper shipping. However poolcenter's site says to contact them for pricing on multiple cases. So I emailed them asking for a price on 3 cases. That was yesterday though and I haven't heard. I figure it's take somewhere between 50 and 75. I could be way off though. When I get a chance I'm going to pay around in the boat with the 2 I have and see if I can't come up with a closer figure. To bad I suck at math.

While we're on the topic...did you guys have foam under the gunwales? Mine did and I'm curious if it was factory or previous owner'd. Can't tell since all the factory foam was removed and replaced with nothin under the deck.

I am leaning toward blue foam sheets from Homie Desperate but I will be tuned in to see what you guys find out for cost, quantity, etc. Thanks for staying multiple steps ahead of me(I do make that part easy by working slow):D
