Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

Wow, this is a great thread. I bought a sylvan 18'r last spring with the idea of restoration this winter. I now have a much better idea of how to proceed.

my sylvan and trailer seem to be exact copies of the starcraft in this thread. I have a 135hp evinrude ('78) but doesn't have trim n tilt. I think as part of the restoration I will install a cmc pt130 and a motorguide tm as well. I'd also like to do a front and/or rear casting deck with storage underneath.

thanks to all for all the great info in this thread.

Welome to iboats Clyde. Your Sylvan definitely is pretty much a Starcraft. We'd love for you to start a new thread with pictures. We love pictures! I'm jealous of that 135. Bummer that you're 1 year shy of being able to retrofit it with an affordable OEM tilt n' trim unit. For a '78 the CMC unit is the way to go.

I'll be getting going on my project again here very soon.

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

Thanks for the Christmas wishes Bob and Paul. I hope you both had good ones. Ours was great.

I got some much needed boat items: new trailer winch, trailer LED lights, and an LED bow light. My new bunk brackets should be here soon and then I'll dig out the trailer, get it squared away and then flip the hull back over and get back to work.

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

Thanks Bill.

I did some work on the trailer yesterday. Got the old roller bunks removed and moved the axle back a few holes. That should solve my tongue weight issue. I also did some ghetto body work on my one fender which was pretty beat up and got it reshaped pretty nicely. I was hoping my new bunk brackets would come today but it's looking like tomorrow. If all goes well I'll have the boat right-side-up and back on the trailer this weekend.

Haha, not quite. The gifts were from my parents and sister. My wife is just "allowing" me to continue purchasing my needed supplies for this project. Fortunately my freelance gig is netting me enough to no longer really need the permission. :D

Uh EZ, as you very well KNOW, these projects take a lot more than money. Methinks thine wife 'tis allowing thou TIME to play. That's the one thing in life we will never get back. Permission or not, give your lady a hug.:D
You are moving right along my friend. Make sure there is no ice around when you flip her upright, don't want to scratch the paint!!

Did some more work on the trailer yesterday. I installed the new bunk brackets and made up some bunks. I had purchased 2 new PT 2x4's for this purpose but oddly enough, I had 2 PT boards that have been in my garage for a while that were already the perfect length. No cutting at all. Strange (and convenient).

You can see in this picture how far back I moved the axle. I have no idea why it would have been that far forward and it had clearly been that was for a long time. The fenders will be reinstalled later.

New winch installed as well

I am very happy with this trailer and set up. It fits the boat well, has a good amount of adjustability to it to make it even better, and is structurally in fantastic shape. I know it needs a paint job and maybe if I wasn't already fighting the cold to get anything done I might have painted it. For now that can wait till later.

Here's a pic of the paint job with the tape removed. I don't think I'd posted any of those:

Looks good EZ. :)

The trailer axle may have been moved forward to help reduce tongue weight. Did that with both of my trailers.

Re: 18' Starcraft SuperSport restoration

Hey gunner1, you could of stopped after the first 7 words of your post. What on earth makes someone post such negative dribble? No I won't cut you up too bad as you requested, but it irks me to no end when that "green monster of envy" shows through whinning about how come, what if or why not...blah blah blah. Who cares where he/she rates? Iboats did what they felt was right to someone they value as a customer. Quit looking through the bottom of that half empty glass and see the beauty in the fresh glass they just poured.

Sorry for the rant, and yes I did read your whole post...at least some of it was worth reading, albeit the half empty sarcastic pessimistic approach was uncalled for IMO! So again...cheers to iboats and boo to the questioning of something rare in the world of business today.

As my Grandfather used to say...life is a personal race, never feel as though your being left behind, for when you do, you'll end up looking at your backend leading the way!

OK,OK!! I edited my original post to remove any "offensive" part. I didn't realize the seats were shipped directly from Wise. If I had, my post WOULD have stopped after the first seven words because the rest would have been moot. It wasn't the "green monster of envy", just my pessimistic side shining through. On the lighter side, it's funny how something can be viewed as innocent by one person and damning by the next! Smooth sailing, my friend!

No worries, I fall off that high horse I was on, more than I ride it. We're all boat brothers/family here...bound to squabble now & then, and then it's quickly forgotten and we all move on...peace Bro.

EZ, that paint is preeeettty! Glad you got the trailer unburied from the snow. I thought I saw a glimpse of new bearing buddies in a pic, how bad were the old bearings? On your axle, is that going to give you too much tongue weight? I did the same thing on my bass boat trailer, ended up putting it back and moving my winch a few inches. I got too much sway moving axles. Happy New Year and as always, your doing a great job. Dale
