Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!
Sunday I pulled Miss Morgan out of the barn and back into my shop. I have a lot of irons in the fire so to speak, but I want to get some updates / stuff I never got to, done before summer gets here. I'm going to juggle that it with finishing up my kitchen / dinning room floor project...mostly done just some minor odds and ends.
The retaining wall at the lake, still need to get it back filled. I managed to get 11 of the 100 loads hauled in before my truck driver had mechanical issues....spring broke on the front axle, what are the odds? Since then I haven't been able to get out there when the weather has been co-operative....maybe this weekend the weather will hold out for me.
Then there is the fence across the front of my acreage project.....350' of it and a new gate, landscaping etc.....
Oh and the new AC unit for the lake, my split system is more or less dead....so I'm converting to a package unit which means a lot of new duct work.....
So back to Miss Morgan, in between all the other projects I want to get a few things done. First on the list is to give her a bath! I had her covered up, but some dust still found its way under the cover. After that I have my list of "gets done before the season" and "hope to get it done before the season".
1. Swim platforms. I"m getting tired of using Max's lower unit as a ladder. I want to build a small swim platform to mount a swing step too. I'm thinking I need to put one on both sides to keep the symetery. The step will go on the starboard side....I'll get into my logic behind that in the next item. I scored some teak from my friend David K, its the darker wood in the pic (the lighter is some nice quarter sawn white oak that will be a chair in my living room one of these days!)
The step in the pic is one that Last Mohican was kind enough to give me! Thanks Matt! I also want to make the brackets for the platforms the "hard points" for the trailer tie downs.

2. Built in fuel tank. As most of you know I couldn't seem to find a built in that would fit under the splash well last year. I sent out some rough dimension to a couple of tank builders today. A rectangular tank would work, but the bottom has to be clipped off on one side because of the slope of the hull. I'm planning on putting it on the port side, to offset the drivers weight. I try to keep the passengers side filled with a tall thin light weigh blond
. So with the fuel weight on the port side, I figured you would want the swim ladder on the starboard side. Make since? Here is a shot of where it will go.
I got a quote back on a tank today for 295$, more or less a custom 14 gallon tank. C.G. labeled, with stainless pick up, and float. Seems reasonable to me, what do you guys think?
3. Finish out under the splash well. More or less had to get the tank to get this done. I'm thinking of a carpeted panel that is removable to hide the battery and tank. The battery gets relocated to the middle in front of the bilge. I also want to add an anchor storage area on the starboard side.....for some reason the anchors seem to end up in the back when she comes out of the hole
. I want to finish it out with some durable finish, maybe duraback? I also want to add some rear speakers somewhere.
4. Finish the wiring. I left a lot of the wires going to the battery long not knowing where it was going to end up with the fuel tank issue last year. I want to trim those up. Also I have twisty ties in a lot of areas that need to be replaced with zip ties...again due to the splash well area not being wrapped up. I also want to add wire wrap to some places that will be subject to abrasion. LED cockpit lights will be going in for sure also. I want to label a lot of the wires, I'm going to try to use the label maker I bought for the office. Has anyone tried that? I also have a battery switch I want to put in.
5. Changing out the water pump. I figure I should do that since I have no idea how old the impeller is. I should have the kit on Thursday.
6. Figure out why in the hell my trim gauge reads backwards! That drives me nuts!
7. Replace the cylinder head temperature gauge with a water pressure gauge.
8. Wire the marker lights on the trailer correctly....someone didn't read the wiring diagram correctly, lol!
9. Drill the props I have and try to figure out what pitch I want to go with in Stainless. Right now I have two aluminums that I have been experimenting with.
10. Have a custom fender made. None of the store bought units work well with the hull. There is something frighting about leaving a high shool kid, who is busy flirting with the girls on the Seado, in charge of making sure the hull doesn't slam into the dock while I pay for gas...."dude, wow that steel really gouged the hull huh?"......anyhow I'm thinking a modified version of a pontoon fender would work really well.
The hope to do list is pretty small....but depending on budget and time may get put off till fall.
1. Rebuild the hydraulic cylinders for the tilt / trim unit. They bleed off over night lowering the motor, which is irritating. You can lock the motor up, but its a pain. Has anyone rebuilt one of these? Any info would be helpful!
2. Limit switch for the tilt/trim. I need to build a limit switch to keep Max from head butting the ski pole when I have it up. I need to find some waterproof switches to use for that. I'm wondering if Granger might have something?
Guess that is it for now!
