Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Just thought I would post an update, spent the weekend at the lake......Saturday was great, made me wish it was summer! I did get some work done on my retaining wall project....waterproofing and the french drain. Now if I could just get some good weather so I can get the dirt hauled in.

My friend David K is talking about building a Glen L wood speed boat, which has caused me to catch that bug.....so that might be the next project you see me building on here......has anyone built one? He is looking at the 15' cracker box design https://www.boatdesigns.com/15-Cracker-Box-rear-cockpit-speed-boat/products/207/ a 15' wood boat with a small block chevy in it.....70 mph, seems a little nuts!

I also have the floor tore up in the kitchen and dining room, hopefully that will be done this weekend.....

As for Miss Morgan, I'm going to pull her in the shop this weekend and measure for the custom fuel tank. I need to get that priced and ordered. I have a lot of odds and ends to get done before summer, figure out the tilt trim sending unit, tidy up the wiring, build the swim platforms, rebuild the water pump and get the gas tank put in. Hopefully here in a few weeks I will get it rolling.

Hey Arch,

Have you seen this guy on iBoats? This is his Second Glen-l Boat. I have already bought the plans for the Squirt. Gunna build it for my Grandsons. I REALLY hope you build the wood boat cuz if you do, I WILL be coming to Edmond to help with it. I have some GOOD resources for wood if and when you get started.

I'm just sayin...:D

I have looked at a few different wood boat plans also. I think it would be fun to make the easy 2 sheets of ?" ply speed boats. but I do like the classic boats My Grandpa has an old dumphy. And you guys have summer weather practically. Gonna be 30? below later this week here. And we just had a few more inches of snow added to the pile.

Come on down and enjoy the warm weather.....I have a spare shovel you can use, lol! I have a guy who works for me who is from the Bahamas.....once it drops below 70 he dresses like we are going on an arctic expedition or something, lol.

Nice build....looks like fun! I wonder how they deal with the water in a wood boat? Granted the materials are better, but still look at all the glass boats with rot. I use system 3 epoxy on my seat frames, good stuff....but still all that wood! Of course I still think a lot of the rot on here is from people not taking care of boats.....I see them outside uncovered all the time.

These boats are all made from rot resistant wood, saturated in epoxy and glass and then coated with multiple coats of uv resistant poly. AND most importantly, babied more than Wives and children. When you put that much work and effort in a boat like that it NEVER sits out side in the elements N-E-V-E-R!!! I will be starting mine Hopefully next fall just as soon as the Flamingo is done and splashed. I can't WAIT to get started. Been studying the plans for 6 months and stockpiliing my wood. Just a little 2 seater 11 foot runabout but gunna be a blast to build and play with for the grand son's

This is what a Squirt Looks Like

Wood,
That thing is wicked cool.

Arch,
Do you ever get over to okmulgee? There is a gathering there the weekend of august 6 2011. We are going to try to make it this year with the Rebel.

Looking forward to the build wood, very sweet little ride! I have turned a few cut flower vases on the lathe out of tropical woods, then epoxied them with system 3 epoxy....same concept I guess, just a lot bigger!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Sunday I pulled Miss Morgan out of the barn and back into my shop. I have a lot of irons in the fire so to speak, but I want to get some updates / stuff I never got to, done before summer gets here. I'm going to juggle that it with finishing up my kitchen / dinning room floor project...mostly done just some minor odds and ends.

The retaining wall at the lake, still need to get it back filled. I managed to get 11 of the 100 loads hauled in before my truck driver had mechanical issues....spring broke on the front axle, what are the odds? Since then I haven't been able to get out there when the weather has been co-operative....maybe this weekend the weather will hold out for me.

Then there is the fence across the front of my acreage project.....350' of it and a new gate, landscaping etc.....

Oh and the new AC unit for the lake, my split system is more or less dead....so I'm converting to a package unit which means a lot of new duct work.....

So back to Miss Morgan, in between all the other projects I want to get a few things done. First on the list is to give her a bath! I had her covered up, but some dust still found its way under the cover. After that I have my list of "gets done before the season" and "hope to get it done before the season".

1. Swim platforms. I"m getting tired of using Max's lower unit as a ladder. I want to build a small swim platform to mount a swing step too. I'm thinking I need to put one on both sides to keep the symetery. The step will go on the starboard side....I'll get into my logic behind that in the next item. I scored some teak from my friend David K, its the darker wood in the pic (the lighter is some nice quarter sawn white oak that will be a chair in my living room one of these days!)

IMG_1120.jpg

The step in the pic is one that Last Mohican was kind enough to give me! Thanks Matt! I also want to make the brackets for the platforms the "hard points" for the trailer tie downs.

IMG_1118.jpg

[/LIST]

2. Built in fuel tank. As most of you know I couldn't seem to find a built in that would fit under the splash well last year. I sent out some rough dimension to a couple of tank builders today. A rectangular tank would work, but the bottom has to be clipped off on one side because of the slope of the hull. I'm planning on putting it on the port side, to offset the drivers weight. I try to keep the passengers side filled with a tall thin light weigh blond :D. So with the fuel weight on the port side, I figured you would want the swim ladder on the starboard side. Make since? Here is a shot of where it will go.

IMG_1116.jpg

I got a quote back on a tank today for 295$, more or less a custom 14 gallon tank. C.G. labeled, with stainless pick up, and float. Seems reasonable to me, what do you guys think?

3. Finish out under the splash well. More or less had to get the tank to get this done. I'm thinking of a carpeted panel that is removable to hide the battery and tank. The battery gets relocated to the middle in front of the bilge. I also want to add an anchor storage area on the starboard side.....for some reason the anchors seem to end up in the back when she comes out of the hole :D. I want to finish it out with some durable finish, maybe duraback? I also want to add some rear speakers somewhere.

4. Finish the wiring. I left a lot of the wires going to the battery long not knowing where it was going to end up with the fuel tank issue last year. I want to trim those up. Also I have twisty ties in a lot of areas that need to be replaced with zip ties...again due to the splash well area not being wrapped up. I also want to add wire wrap to some places that will be subject to abrasion. LED cockpit lights will be going in for sure also. I want to label a lot of the wires, I'm going to try to use the label maker I bought for the office. Has anyone tried that? I also have a battery switch I want to put in.

5. Changing out the water pump. I figure I should do that since I have no idea how old the impeller is. I should have the kit on Thursday.

6. Figure out why in the hell my trim gauge reads backwards! That drives me nuts!

7. Replace the cylinder head temperature gauge with a water pressure gauge.

8. Wire the marker lights on the trailer correctly....someone didn't read the wiring diagram correctly, lol!

9. Drill the props I have and try to figure out what pitch I want to go with in Stainless. Right now I have two aluminums that I have been experimenting with.

10. Have a custom fender made. None of the store bought units work well with the hull. There is something frighting about leaving a high shool kid, who is busy flirting with the girls on the Seado, in charge of making sure the hull doesn't slam into the dock while I pay for gas...."dude, wow that steel really gouged the hull huh?"......anyhow I'm thinking a modified version of a pontoon fender would work really well.

The hope to do list is pretty small....but depending on budget and time may get put off till fall.

1. Rebuild the hydraulic cylinders for the tilt / trim unit. They bleed off over night lowering the motor, which is irritating. You can lock the motor up, but its a pain. Has anyone rebuilt one of these? Any info would be helpful!

2. Limit switch for the tilt/trim. I need to build a limit switch to keep Max from head butting the ski pole when I have it up. I need to find some waterproof switches to use for that. I'm wondering if Granger might have something?

Guess that is it for now!

Still quite the list. Sounds like several items can be checked off quickly though. Glad the step made it in good condition. Sorry I didn't have the stainless screws for it. Can't wait to check her out in person this summer. That date is definite for the OHBA event as far as I know.

Yes, I concur with Seamore, great to see you back in action Arch. Sounds like your seals in the TnT unit are on their way out. However, if you keep her on the trailer, I would have thought it best to store the motor trimmed down, thus avoiding the bleed out overnight. Does the trim change while underway? If not, then you should be able to get another season out of her, if it trims in under load, then yep, you're up for a rebuild which is not a difficult job, just fiddly and potentially messy... I hate spilling hydraulic fluid!!! :D

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Matt, the list seems really doable considering where I was at this point last year! I do wish I knew where the PO was, he was a college guy who was moving....wonder if he would believe it was the same boat? TII, when its on the trailer I have a transom saver supporting Max. I was referring to when she is in the water (I put her in and take her out each time I head to the lake), sometimes I anchor her in the shallow water in front of my house overnight. Its a lot closer than my dock, and given her draft I can leave her in 18" of water. Anyhow one time last year I did that before I figured out it was bleeding off. I got up the next morning and we had some small waves from the breeze, and given that my lower unit was down....the skegg was rubbing up and down in the sand......now I need to repaint the skegg! It works fine while underway, it just bugs me that it bleeds off over night. I hear you on the hydraulic fluid, but it beats gear oil!

No doubt it is a short list considering the progress already made. I didn't realize yours was a free project. My rebel was a freebie as well. I guess I need to post the whole story on my boat.

I actually paid 300$ for her and $1500 for the motor....not free, but close.

I bought this boat about a year ago and have been working on it ever since. I'm going to try to post my progress over the next few weeks to get you guys up to speed. I found it on Craig's list, the ad said, "Free boat with trailer".

sorry guys I was confused by the "free boat with trailer" part must of been one of those buy the trailer get the boat free deals. never the less it was still a good deal.
