Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Tonight I started sanding the primer down...I knocked the top off of it with 180....then dried it off, wow it looked great! So I tried going back over that with 400.....ready for paint! I figured I would need to go one more round, but so far everything looks ready to go. So I'm planning on hitting everything with 180, then going back over it with 400 if it looks ready....if it looks good after the 400, its time for a sealer coat and paint!:D Here is a pic of the sanding....not to exciting looking!

On the down side looks Murphy is coming to town Bob....the weathermen are going nuts, "freezing rain, drizzle, ice, snow, strong gusting winds.....snapping trees and power lines on Thursday...." sounds like a good time to fire up the heater in the shop and sand! I'm heading to HD tomorrow to stock up on wet or dry and then gas for the generator, can't let anything like an ice storm stop progress!

Good looking prep, I'm still thinking about how far I want to go with mine. I think I've got one of the only Glastrons without the standard color scheme.

Oh, they're saying your weather will be here by Friday. This is getting old. I think I'm going to have a summer project.

I think we should all come out and have an I-boats barn raising for you and Bob! Sorry to hear you are going to get to share in the fun! I would salvage the gel coat if you can, epically if it is an unusual scheme.

archbuilder,
Hey man the primmer is looking good. I can't wait to see that thing in it's final color. It is going to look awesome. :D
As for me this weather is really starting to get on my nerves.
I'm supposed to go home Friday but the weather my slow me down. I may wait until the following week. The weather is supposed to be better.
I could really use that barn.
Keep up the great work arc. Get the supplies, fuel and get that thing Painted. :D
Good luck

I'm using a Urathane system. It won't mater if I do break through some, the entire thing will get a sealer coat before the paint goes on.

Tonight was more quality time with a bucket of water and sand paper! I did make a lot of progress, lightly sanding with 220. I did find a few more minor chips, so I may end up shooting one more light prime coat after I get the spot puttying done. I'm going to block the rest of it out and evaluate where I am at that point. I have plenty of primer, so I might just spend the weekend puttying and blocking it good one last time. Monday looks like it's going to be 50 (1/2" of ice and 4" of snow tomorrow...go figure), so I might sneak out and get a prime coat on it. Here is a pic from tonight, the transom looks splotch because part of it is still wet from sanding.

I also need to get started on the paint booth, probably another weekend project. Getting closer to paint!

Hey archbuilder,
You may need to increase the HP on that thing. All that putty and primer.
Just kidding my friend. :D
Has your weather started turning bad yet?
I hope everything goes good for you.
The boat is looking good.

Not yet, we have the eerie 55 degrees...light fog....high humidity and no wind night.....you can feel it coming! Sounds like its going to start about noon, a little later than they thought. Who knows, may turn into two snow flakes...or 2" of ice....I'm ready bring it on! :D

With gelcoat I didnt need a booth because you spray so thick that dust and such doesnt matter, but when I spray paint I use plastic dropcloths tied to the ceiling and make an airtight room out of them. Then I put a boxfan blowing front to back with a furnace filter behind it. It works quite well for the money.

Today's weather wasn't as bad as it could have been, thankfully the freezing rain didn't last that long. Here is a shot earlier today of round 1....round 2 is supposed to start tonight, can't wait.

So far I still have power, so I was able to make progress on the boat tonight. I finished knocking everything down with 220, and wiped the sludge off. I think I'm going to get the halogen lamp out tomorrow, mark any chips, spot putty them and sand them down. After that I will evaluate whether I need to spot prime or just shoot a light coat on the entire thing.

archbuilder,
Love the boat, hate the ice.
It hasn't started here yet.
They say it may go North of us here in Milan and hit my house in KY.
The boat is looking great.

Love this weather....I guess it gives the news people something to do! It kind of depends on the weather....I should be ready for primer or sealer tomorrow night, but its a no go with all of the snow and ice. I can probally get away with spot priming in the shop, but I really don't want to shoot a full coat inside. I do need to work on the paint booth, so I may work on that this weekend. I also have a couple of small voids at the top of the transom that I need to fill with seacast, so that is on the schedule too. I'll try to do a video on that. So to answer your question....I'm not sure, maybe two weeks if I can get a warm day to shoot it.

I'm probally making a wood frame and put plastic over it. I have plenty of lumber, just need to figure out how big I want it.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

I'm using a DuPont urethane high build primer, urethane sealer and a urethane base clear system. It will be trailered or on the lift in my dock, otherwise I would have gone with a bottom paint. I did one in Imron several years back and it worked great. Still not as durable as gel coat, but a lot less work! Its going to be a metallic red with a metallic silver stripe....I have a photo shoped pic a few pages back of the scheme.
