I like the idea of plastic pipe better than EMT because of the rot factor(obviously). Do they make plastic pipe smaller than 1/2 inch? I have used pecs and it needed to be strapped in very close intervals to make it look good. How about a 20 foot piece of heat shrink LOLLLL.

I like the red silver idea for your paint scheme on the trailer, that will look sharp...red pinstriping and all....esp if thats the same color combo plan for the boat.

heck while your at all this metal work, I think the metal steps with rhino would definetly last a heck of alot longer than the plywood, couple season and that stuff will be rotted out probably...warped etc....

The boat is going to have the reverse scheme, metallic red for the primary color and silver as the accent stripe. I think the interior is going to be mostly gray, with some red accents......red can get a little warm in the August Oklahoma sun! My Sea Ray has some burgundy accents in the seat....think I still have stripe burned on my butt from last summer!

archbuilder,
That sounds a lot like my new color scheme. The colors will be Grey and red. :)
I will be looking forward to seeing the progress too.

This is funny there are so many of us rebuiding our boats at the same time and all of us generally moving at the same pace. Too bad we live so far apart it would be great for us to all meet in the water with all our newly restored old boats

Hey that is one of the reason's I wanted this boat.....easy to tow to new places! I can't even tell it's back there when I move it around....I could make it, but Mick will probably spend the weekend changing wheel bearings on the side of the highway! :D

Hey common archbuilder(what's your real name anyway- I'm about as tired of typing in archbuilder as I am of you hammering me about my tin trailer)! J/K
I will get to the trailer eventually???
Speaking of us all working on the boats at the same time and getting together- that would be really neat- meet somewhere in the middle and make a weekend out of it in the summer sometime!
By the way, while we're on the topic- what are all of your "goal" end dates???
I hope to be done for this summer- I have been telling my 4 year old that I will have it done for the summer and I will be pulling her and my wife on the raft. My biggest problem is come March I start coaching baseball for our high school so I gotta keep moving now while I have the time. If I'm not done by then I will be teaching all day, coaching all afternoon, and working on the boat at night- the wife won't be to happy then:)

Another note- I hope the engine runs by the time I'm done dumping all this money and time into the boat! LOL- that would suck!

mine will be done by this summer. It just depends on how much Gets done. I have too much time for the first time since I was about 10 so I will probably get it gelcoated, contrast color painted, find some captains chairs, reupolster the entire interior, then see how close summer is and if its a while off I will look for something else to do on it. Also somewhere in there I hope to rebuild the trailer but I will have to figure out what to do with the boat. Maybe wait till summer and hit someone out on the main road up for the use of their docks for a week and leave the boat in the lake while I redo the trailer at night.

I'm sure hanging out with all of you would make for an exciting weekend! I wonder if Vegas could join us? Do you think Southwest Airlines would notice if his carry on luggage was 23' long? "Excuse me sir, but you luggage smells like wet fiberglass...":D

I have spent the last two night working on a little wood working project for my Dad's Christmas....actually about half of that tinkering with my router table...It gets some oil finish tonight, and put together tomorrow. I'll post some pics once I have it in one piece.

I should make some progress on the boat the next few days...all of the family stuff is on Christmas....so that leaves 3 days to tinker with the boat! :D

Three whole days for boat work? That means you will have this done, right? After looking at all you have done so far, and what everyone else is doing I am just floored. I need to get off my butt and get my outdrive welded up. Wife keeps telling me that if I dont have the boat ready to get in the water come this spring she will not be happy.

Have you complied a list of what is left to do on your project yet? I keep thinking I need to make one, but every time I put pen to paper it makes me think I just need to take things one at a time.

I make list from time to time Frog, right now I have one on the trailer....it keeps getting longer, not shorter! I also make list of how to go about it...a sequence....what to do first, then next, and so on....I have used it to minimize how many times I have to flip the boat.

Actually tonight I have been working on Dad's Christmas present....picked up part of it from the powder coater today.....and right now I smell like teak oil. Should have it together tomorrow and I will post a picture.

Now I need some help from you guys. Has anyone ever built a mold to lay gelcoat and glass on? I need to build one for the cooler, but I am a bit perplexed about how to go about it. Wood would be a great medium to build it out of, but how do you get it smooth? I could put gloss plastic laminate on the flat sections, but I can't come up with a good way to do the corners. Maybe put some resin on it and sand it out flat?

Well back to the teak oil......:D

archbuilder, funny you should talk about molds. I just ordered my seacast today and the woman told me that they have a section on their website about making molds out of wood to use to create your inner transom skin. Maybe this will help you out?
Merry Christmas,

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

archbuilder,
So, you want to make a mold? Well, I have built several in my short life. :p
You can do it several ways. One is to build a mock up of the item you want. using almost anything. I have used good old bondo to round off the corners and get a smooth surface. Just remember to wax it several times before you try to do any kind of layup from it. You can use wax, then PVA and then start the layup. Gel coat, Then fiberglass, Poly or epoxy.
I hope I didn't confuse you.
Anyways just use bondo to get it smooth and wax, wax, wax, to seal it.
Hope this helps.
Bob

PS I made a list too. I just can't remember where I put it. :p

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Thanks Mick / Bob...and how did I forget about Oops? Thanks for the reminder Esmobee....but what chapter of the novel was that??? Lol! I figured bondo would somehow fit into this! One of my friends actually used it to fix his concrete swimming pool several years ago. It is almost up there with duct tape to fix anything! So did you primer the plywood bob? Or just wax it? I wonder if you could slick it up with high build lacquer, then wax it? Anyone ever try that? I did measure by the way, the ice chest has to be 11" wide to accommodate Oop's Corona!

I also worked on cleaning up the shop tonight....I got tired of tripping over the sawzal and spending 20 minutes looking for a tape measure! I need to pick up some argon / co2 tomorrow for the MIG, then back to the trailer!

archbuilder,
You can use anything you want to smooth out the wood. The wax becomes the barrier and allows the release. Just remember any imperfection in the mold will be on the part. I always put the wax on and buffed it out several times, and then one more coat of wax and layup without buffing.

Well it was raining....now its sleeting and should be turning into snow soon....wind gust to 50 in some places. Sounds like a great time go out the the shop, fire up the heater, and work on the boat!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Well I finished up my Dad's Christmas present this morning....more or less just had to bolt it together. He has had this bench down by his garden for years....and it was at his work for years before that. It was rusted pretty bad and a couple of the seat boards were broken in two. I had the frame sandblasted and powder coated last week. I made the new boards out of hickory and oiled them with teak oil. Now he doesn't have to worry about falling through the bench!
