Re: 14' Larivee restore

007.jpgHere is the sorta final underside of cap with wood glassed. Just need to grind the edges tomorrow & she's ready for sanding & whatever I decide later for paint/gelcoat. Just a little glass & wood & so very much stronger. Check this off momma's list. FYI-still haven't heard anything on the engine/seals. They hadn't tried as of yesterday. Cheers fellas...enjoy the rest of your wknd. It was a beautiful night here in south florida. Took one of the other boats out in the intracoastal tonight with a couple of the youngsters for a Christmas light expedition...almost full moon & 72 degrees....doesn't get any better....

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Thanks so much, Gus, Sam, & Wood. It felt so very good to get back on it this week. I'm hoping for a hull flip by this wknd. My son even said last night, "well, mom...guess you can say the hard stuff is done." Starting to get excited for a splash Februaryish????? Every day gets me closer. Gotta hope the engine seals can get pulled on that engine. Otherwise, I'm diggin' deep in the pocket & gonna treat myself to a brand spankin' new one. Did a little work on one of my 2 Evinrude spl 48's early last wk. New plugs, greased steering, cleaned carbs(they were horrible), drained gas (full of water). I put it back together & still not sounding good(bogging down). Took them off again yesterday before the Christmas lite cruise. Started right up & sounded gr8, but when we got on the water, bogging down still with higher rpm's. Had to take a nice leisurely cruise(which we would have done anyway...don't like going fast in the dark)(I know that sounded weird...no sarcasm there, fellas). I guess tomorrow on my day off, back to the carbs again on the 48 spl, then finish grinding the triangles & front cap. I hate it when engines don't run!!! Sam & Gus, are we not the luckiest people with our weather? Absolutely beautiful...

Okay...just read the entire thread and examined each picture with a great deal of admiration and all i can say is DAAAAAAMN GIRL!!! That is phenomenal 'glass work!! Where in south FLA are ya and how much for you to drive up Gainesville way and give a guy lessons in fiberglass 101?!?! Kinda makes me ashamed to post my progress so far. LOL! I took your advice on laying up the vertical surfaces and sure enough that worked beautifully! Will be using the wax paper idea next and see how much that will reduce my sanding time.

Thanks again and outstanding work on that boat of yours!!! Will be following this one to completion! :high5:

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Thanks, waterwezl...This is the second boat I've done. The first one was my son's about 2 yrs ago. It was our first & it took a long time & we made plenty of mistakes, but we definitely learned from them. This forum helped us on that restore, & continues to help me on mine. This one I am doing alone. I have moved quicker on this one(except for the thumb injury delay) than the two of us did on the last. Confidence builds as much as knowledge & experience. Woodonglass I think gave me the wet the glass before laying it advice & it was so coincidental that you needed the same advice on the day that I was, once again, implementing that method on my triangles. I have used that method with csm & 1708...both successfully. I live in Boynton Beach(Palm Bch County) & don't think I'll be heading your was any time soon, but I know a fella....sphelps(sam) who I think lives up that way. He is another on this forum who is quite handy & quite generous with sage advice. Listen intently to what these gentlemen offer. GT(Gus) as well. I am thrilled that this worked for you. I, too, will be tagging along with your thread. Just remember, no question is silly...ask away & these fine people will steer ya in the right direction. You will be given much advice to ponder...try the ones you think will work & pass it back to someone else if it does. Welcome aboard!!

No, Thank you and all the awesome folks on this forum!
I honestly don't know or remember {arthritis of the brain;)}, if that advice actually originated in my train of thought.
It is a technique I have used throughout the years whenever the need arose while working with fiberglass, but the honest to God truth is it was more than likely some one like Woody or Frisco or oops! that mentioned it previously on the forum.
I probably just parroted it as time goes on...

I learned the "Wetting out Glass Patch on Wax Paper" trick for working on vertical and upside down repairs from OOPS!! I've just Passed it Forward!!! I'm Schultz and KNOW NOTHING!!! Remember, I'm just an

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Well, finally got the news today I had been dreading...pulling seals not gonna happen. Too much corrosion-no threads left to hold new ones in. Mechanic very impressed with engine-just needs lower unit. His "used" guy doesn't have but is looking. I'm gonna have my dad who lives north of Orlando look. Lots of freshwater up that way. It's a 1990 30hp Mariner lower unit we looking for. We don't see many of those down here. Just try to keep smiling!!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

In unrelated news....I need some technical advice...I have been posting pictures for some time now without difficulty. Today, without any changes by me, I tried to upload a couple of pics on the engine part of the forum & can't succeed. Here's what I normally do: load from same camera/memory card to computer, log on to Iboats forum, go to my thread, go advanced for my reply, manage attachments, add files, select them from my library, select upload files, they show up in the bottom window, select insert line & they always show up in my text window. Today I can get to the last step but when I select "insert line", they don't insert..What am I doing wrong? (feeling so stupid!) Always worked before.......I hate technology....

let me try...

Seems to be working for me and I followed your directions. I'd open a FREE Photobucket account. It's a lot better and easier to size your pics.

Re: 14' Larivee restore

You're something else, wood....merry Christmas to you & your family as well. I will look into it this wknd. Day off tomorrow already pretty jammed full: my son & I just got the boat off the trailer so I can make some repairs & adjustments/additions to make the fit a bit more custom for this boat. It has such a deep v. I want to get the trailer all set BEFORE I turn her over & take care of her bottom & keel. I would be just sick if I fix her all up & then bust the keel cause I was too dumb to fit the trailer/bunks/rollers first. My plan includes at least one new/bigger roller, breaking/cutting off some rusted u-bolts & hardware, replacing with new, & installing taller bunk brackets. It sounds easy enough but I'm sure something will go NOT according to plan. Thanks for the advice. I will be sure to ask you for help with the photobucket if/when I need it. YAY it's the weekend!!!!!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

above is the carrier nut in pieces. don't think there is enough threads to get another back in. took lower unit to a merc guy around the corner. he's gonna play with it. can't do much more damage. he seems to think if he can get the seals done, top & bottom, everything else might stay put because it's corroded in there. we'll see. I'm wondering if a spot or two of weld might insure things are secure. had some guy try to sell me a used lower unit for this from Mississippi today. $400 smackers...heck for that price he darn sure better look good cuttin' my grass & bringin' me a bloody mary!! throw in wash/wax my truck & it's a deal!! I'm having some problems adjusting the trailer bunks & rollers to fit this deep v hull. I will post some pics for advice from the gang in next couple days.
