sounds like a plan fellas...thanks a million. (no worries sp-strange doesn't even begin to describe me! I'm right there with ya'..) You know I'm not afraid of work, but this thumb doesn't need a power tool irritating that tendon. Just thought this might be something I could accomplish while I'm healing. Thanks wood...good to hear from you again..thought you had left me fer another. LOL....

Hey fellas...been about a month..hoping to start working on the boat again in next couple days. Doctor said my thumb is doing well. Been resting it, trying not to irritate that tendon. I've done nothing on the boat for a month & feel so lazy. Think I'm missin' the smell of resin! Have one update, though, that also I need some help on. I started a thread over on engine forum, but respect you guys enough to think/know you'll have some sage advice. So I found a tiller, 30hp Mariner, 1992-ish on craigslist. My son & I picked it up couple days ago. Started pretty good. Had some minimal (for that year) corrosion, pretty clean inside. Prop in bad shape-no problem-easy fix. Was pissin' as we ran it, but not a good hearty stream. Knew we'd need to put a water pump on it-again, no problem-we've put many on. We took carb off today, cleaned it(it was in pretty good shape). Got new plugs. Only "uh oh" or "oh crap" we just noticed today...one of the four bolts that attach lower unit, has been previously broken off. Now broken bolts are never what I would call "fun", but this one poses a perplexing situation...the cavitation plate is only a few inches, at most, below it...how do we get that one out???? The others, we are sure, are also in jeopardy of snapping, but our intentions are to give them a little heat vs. freeze & pray to the lower unit removal gods. You guys are such a wealth of experience & knowledge, I'm sure hopin' one of you can offer us hope. Moderators-I know this isn't the engine help part of forum, but I have a relationship & trust with some of these fellas, so sure hopin' you don't move my post...

How much room is there ? Would an offset drill fit ? Will the foot come off if the other 3 bolts come out ? If you can get the foot off then you should be able to deal with the bolt .
:facepalm: I can't believe I just attempted to give mechanical advice ... I can't even keep my lawn mower running ! :laugh:

oh my goodness, sam...I had a poopy day & darn if you didn't just make me laugh so hard one of my kids looked at me like I was an alien....I'll get exact dimensions & post a photo tomorrow...I got a buddy in the neighborhood who I'll bet is you, Gus, Wood, & other esteemed iboaters double..I'm sure he'll figure something out. Yeah, we definitely gotta apply some heat/freeze to the 3 remaining. If, and that's a super-size if, they come out without breakage, don't know if we can get it off. I would think the remaining piece still gonna hold on pretty directly. We'll sleep on it, some will drink on it, others will think about drinkin' on it...and see what the new day brings. Good to hear your ......keyboard!!

You dun right Good on that 1708 layup considerin' all the variables!!! I'm just gettin over a case of "Trigger Thumb" myself. Must be somethun to do with Glassin' !!! LOL!!!! That shot shore nuff hurts like the Dickens!!! It takes about 6 weeks but after that, no more problemo!!!!! Hang in there girl, you'll get there eventually!!!

no kidding, wood? wow, what are the chances of that? yeah, some say the grinder might have already irritated my thumb before the actual injury. if you google trigger finger you see in one of the explanations "may occur from excessive use of heavy duty hand tools". Anyway-glad you are healing as well.

Not sure what caused mine. Just woke up one day and my right thumb was "Clicking" and Hurting. Doc Said Trigger thumb. Never had heard of it. When he brought out that big ole' needle I thought "This ain't good!" I was Right!!!!! But...All is well now and I hope it don't come back!!!!! All I know is...

I know how much I hate it when someone says, "I've got good news & bad news", but.....I've got good news & bad news..The good news is we got the 3 bolts off & were able to drop the lower unit quite easily. The impeller, surprisingly, was in darn near perfect shape. Turns out she wasn't pissin' because there was debris that consisted of mostly little clam-like almost barnacles. Scraped em out where we could, blew out all the lines, & she's pissin' like a 12yr old now......................(long pause followed by the bad news-plural...bad news). Ok, so the first thing I did when we got it home was drain lower unit. I figured as old as it is, probably had water in oil. To my shock, looked great. Refilled...commenced with test runs. While we had the water pump off, as it was turned on it side, we noticed milky oil coming out of top end seals at drive shaft..poop, poop, poop! No doubt it needs upper & lower seals. Problem is it's doubtful that these will come out easily without the use of dynamite...Might just have a $400 paper weight. It's a shame, cause it runs real good & now that we can cool it, just needed a prop. I'm gonna take it to a marine mechanic I know this week to get his opinion, but pretty sure that, because of the age & deterioration in general, he might send it to the engine graveyard. I guess I should finish on more good news...I am off every day this week(at least until 3p.m.) so I have a boat on my porch that better be ready for more grindin' n glassin', no more goofing off. I weirdly miss glassing & grinding.....think I've been sniffing too much resin...cheers & enjoy rest of weekend.

smell that? ah, the sweet smell of resin. So I started fiddling with the boat today. I got the upper gunwhale wood capped with torn csm as you directed, woody. I routered the edges so turned out ok. Working on those back triangle pieces where pole holders and/or cleats can go, plus will add structure/firm up the transom to the sides. Have a quick question...gonna PB in first, but after that kicks, will glass in over top to transom & sides, both inside & out. On the outside transom, right side, is the stamped/engraved hull number. It is only about 2"-3" down..I would like to tab down a bit further than that, but would have to grind the numbers out to do that. Should I/could I or just come down to that & stop? Can I re-engrave/etch them & if so, Dremel? I will try to take a pic & post...don't know if you will be able to see.

Here are some pics...triangles with some csm on underside before I put in. easier to get a couple coats on before they are upside down in the back corners. Tabbing will be added after pb in. Other 2 pics of the hull number. As before said, would like to come a little lower with my tabbing, but that would mean grinding this out. I feel like a criminal if I grind this out(like when I cut those darn tags off my new pillows last week). What do ya'll think?

sphelps is right, except...I'd record the number and then have a jeweler engrave it on a piece of aluminum plate and then attach it back on the boat when you're done. Glassin looks good!!!!

I didn't completely grind my hull number away, but with all the prep for re-painting, it might as well have been ground away...
After all was said and done, and the transom was painted...
I took a piece of masking tape and placed it over the area where I was going to engrave the hull number.
Using a regular Sharpie, I wrote the numbers, then using a tiny little ball mill on my Dremel, I carefully carved the numbers back in...
I finished them off with a little Rustoleum black, slightly thinned...I just slopped it on there then wiped off the excess from the surface with a little thinner after it had dried...
They didn't come out perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, but at least they are engraved on the hull...
You can see a portion of them in this pic...middle right...



Hope you get the engine sorted out...keep in mind, a good running engine is sometimes better to put a few bucks into, as opposed to getting another one with just as much wear and tear on it, the same kinds of issues, and possibly in even worse condition...unless of course your marine mechanic/friend has an awesome deal on a replacement...

That's good advice, Gus...all around. I have no problem putting some cash into this motor. I like it & think it will be a good fit for the boat. Just don't know yet whether he can get the seals out of her. He was supposed to call me yesterday, but I think he said he might go fishing. I'll give him a couple more days & stop in on Friday if I don't hear from him. If the seals can be done, I just need a fuel pump, fuel filter, & thermostat. Easy fixes! BTW, I got the motor down your neck of the woods...I am from Palm Beach County. We drove to Miami Yacht Club to get it last week. If I'd a been thinkin', I could've looked you up. Next time... In other news, I'm itching right now, yup, itching like crazy! Man, it feels good to be back to work on the glassin'. I got my transom triangles in...need to do a little tabbing tomorrow, not much, but cramped upside down space so will be time consuming for this old bitty. I caught a bit of ADD & pulled the bow cap out of the far corner of the yard. Turned it upside down & cut/ground out couple of the worst displays of glassing small pieces of wood. I forgot to take any before pics, but will take some during pics tomorrow. There were a few pieces of wood "glassed" in on the under side for support & to strengthen or provide a backing for a bow light or cleat, neither did this boat have. I got it down to bare glass. I will reinforce the edges & larger areas tomorrow & for sure properly glass some wood where I definitely will be putting a cleat & a bow light. Pics will help, but it got dark on me before I could take them. More updates tomorrow. I have missed the hard work...must admit, though, my thumb is a little tender tonight. Hope I didn't set it back with all the grinding today.

Well, I've had a busy week on the boat, for a change. Actually, boat(s). First of all, great to get busy on the restore again. As you can see, I was able to finally get the "Bermuda triangles" in(I began calling them because they are not too big, but an absolute pain in the arse..glassin' upside down..hmmm...how much do I hate that. But they are in, just needing a little grinding on the edges. Tabbed the undersides with 2 layers 1708 tabs & finished with csm. Did the tops today..tabbed with one big layer 1708 & csm. In addition, I spent a couple days working on the small bow cap. Although a long way off, eventually this needed some attention, so dedicated some time taking out a couple of horribly glassed in pieces of wood. Followed by a little grinding, I was ready to glass in a few pieces of wood that will be necessary when I'm ready to put in bow light, cleats, etc. in this area. Glassing went without a problem. I also ran a piece of 1708 along edges where (a)it will attach to the hull & (b)the bottom edge/aluminum piece will have to be riveted back on after sanding & gelcoating/painting. Some of the rivet holes were pretty wollered out. This will give me a fresh start there.
