Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha One Gen 2 Barrel

They must draw at least some because back in the day before I knew any better I used that stupid pan that attached to the lower unit where you pour antifreeze into. I guess it worked well enough because the block was ok next season. Guess i got lucky. Now in the internet era I get what you...

Alpha I Gen II Impeller Replacement

Consider getting the guide pins also. They hold the pump housing and new impeller in exactly the right position as you install it. This helps get the maximum use out of the impeller as it rides off center. Search for Achris's videos on YT.

Trailer guides with step in the way

I have side guides also. Tbh I don't think they do anything but get in the way when I'm cleaning/waxing. As long as I submerge the trailer just right the boat centers itself. I don't believe it's ever touched them.

    Carpet replacement

Carpet is a thing of the past in boats. It's all about EVA foam now. Strip the carpet and buy the foam panels off Ebay/Amazon. Peel and stick done. Probably go farther on resale also.

    AlphaOne Gen2 large gasket install

I use Permatex High Tack. I brush it along the surface where the oring lays. Easy clean up with acetone and a paper towel. I'm sure some gets on the aluminum ring also. As stated above, your job is just to make sure the oring stays in place during drive insert, as far as pressures in which...

    McGuire's one step compound

I go over mine every other year, or maybe every 3rd year, with Meguiars Power Cut Compound 91 and then Rejex. At 64 though it's getting very hard on the rotator cuff and thumbs. Mine does stay in enclosed storage. Looking forward to a tinny in the future.

    Am I under proped?

Rule of thumb is 200 rpm change for every inch of pitch. So if you drop 2 inches you may go up to 5400 rpm, not the direction you want to go. What QBhoy is saying above is the tach needs to be verified because something ain't sounding exactly right. Somehow verify the tach before proceeding.

    gas odor only when underway

Seeping fuel sender gasket or screws. Assuming your sender is toward the rear of the tank, which most are, when you plane off fuel runs to the back and puts it under pressure.

    Stupid question…

Did you put the key (small metal piece that fits in the slot on the impeller that lays on the flat part of the shaft) back on when you change the impeller? It's what turns the impeller.

Can i cut my bunks down?

Ideally you want the rear bunk supports directly under the transom while maintaining tongue weight as described above. If the bunks protrude past the transom feel free to cut them off. The weight of an outboard, especially on an aluminum boat, can and does often cause the hull to bend/distort...

    Aluminum trailer boating in salt

Ok thanks I guess I'm overthinking it. My uncle lived in Cape Coral, had boats on his lift and would spend a lot of time washing down after an outing and would talk a lot about how hard the salt was on everything. Maybe he put too much fear in me lol.

    Need better hole shot

I hit my limiter once (2002 5.0 MPI) in the now 20+ years of owning the boat. I rarely ever go to WOT but conditions must have been just right that day. I had recently put the 19" on. I can vouch that the 5150 is correct. I heard a beeping sound. I can't say I remember an ignition miss...

    Boat Pricing

The boat was obviously kept in the water, all the more reason for concern. A boat of that value and vintage I would think you should be able to find something less risky. The fact it wasn't at least cleaned prior to sell tells you something.

    Aluminum trailer boating in salt

I've never boated on the coast but would love to before my hour glass is empty. I know the protocol is to wash down and flush motor asap after exiting the ramp. But exactly how does this work with an aluminum boat sitting on the trailer? How does one rinse between the bunks and hull? These...

    Need better hole shot

You are right. I stand corrected. Apparently it comes in 1" in the 17-21" range.

    Need better hole shot

The Enertia is not heralded as a ski prop but the beauty of it is you can dial it in, in 1" pitch increments vs 2" as most all others. I've never tried it but that might come in handy if you're trying to cover all bases, ski vs cruise.

    Need better hole shot

WIth my 5.0 MPI I changed from a 21 to 19 and made a big difference. The 21 was at 4700, within the motors range of 4600-5000, and the 19 put me at 5100. All I do is cruise and I still like the performance with the 19 better than the 21. Tbh I think it actually uses less fuel. Top end stayed...
