    1978 SS 16 restoration

Sounds like a reasonable approach, but others with more experience will certainly want to see detailed pics. I had to deal with a few corrosion pinholes, but fortunately no cracks on my hull.

Hang in there! Your at the peak, as far as the miserable part of the project goes!

    1978 SS 16 restoration

I'm running a Yamaha 60hp 4-stroker, and hit 34 mph flat out. 90hp is a 50% increase. Power required is likely proportional to velocity cubed when on plane? (SWAG), so that power increase only gets me up to 39 mph. Would be way better for getting a water skier up though!

    1978 SS 16 restoration

Seeing these pics brings flashbacks to last fall for my project! Looking good. Just one thought... Would 3M 5200 or the like be more suitable for your overlapping patch on the outside of the transom? I'd think it would provide the sealing and flexibility needed for that joint.

    1978 SS 16 restoration

Welcome! Sorry to hear about the 'Rude running without oil. I lost a Merc that way. A friend borrowed the boat, filled it up with fuel at the marina, but didn't add any oil. Ran it hard for the weekend with almost no lube, and it grenaded shortly thereafter. Good luck with the project...

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration By Steve

I think that's the same motor as the F60 (~ 260 lbs), just with slightly higher rev limit? Seems like a perfect choice to me The 60 will get our boat up on plane loaded with 6 people, but it's working. 2-4 people and it feels downright zippy. Tops out at about 35 mph with two passengers.

Congrats on the splash, and nice choice on the outboard! We've got a 2007 F60 Yamaha on ours, the first year with fuel injection. It's been flawless so far.

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Hey gang, it's been a busy summer here, but I thought I'd post up a few pics. The SS16 clone is exceeding our expectations, hauling gear and passengers around our lake and river system with ease. Buttoned up for night - the modified mooring cover fits pretty well over the taller windshield we...

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Wow, beautiful work! If the original builders of these boats could see the care taken in a restoration 50 yrs later, they'd be shocked I'm sure.

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Very nice! Nothing major wrong with the motor? Looks like your canvas guy is using your pictures in his advert on Kijiji. Just saw it come up a few minutes ago!

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Sorry to hear the drill guide didn't work out. That's disappointing for sure. Sounds like the job got done just fine without it though. I've enjoyed using the pneumatic rivet gun I bought for this task. It is very satisfying to push the rivet into place, and while maintaining nice even...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Good news! The bilge was bone dry after 48 hrs in the water. It's now moored at the cottage dock until our next trip north. The Garmin Striker transponder issue was due to operator error - old eyes didn't key the plug in the correct orientation. It's all good now. Extra snaps were added to...

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Much of my threaded hardware was not stainless, and some had corroded badly after 50 yrs. I tossed all of it, and replaced with new stainless items. Surprisingly, some of the screws like the ones under the rubrail along the gunnel, were still mostly corrosion free after all these years. In...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Here she is, sitting at the dock. Still crazy windy this morning, and cool temps. Was hoping for some cruising on calm water, but this may not be the weekend for it! Lots of other projects at camp to deal with but the boat snaps need to be sorted out before we leave, as she's in the water for...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

OK folks, the splash happened! We had a chance to get back up to the cottage this weekend, so during the week I quickly got the boat buttoned up, strapped down, loaded, and north we went. My son did the trailer maintenance, and we had an uneventful trip. Winds were very strong though, so I...

What's the situation with the 4-stroke? Lower end issues, or powerhead?

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

That's a really clean little glasser! We owned a Tempest 165 with Merc 60hp 2-stroker briefly. It was a fun little boat, but didn't handle well with more than 3 people in it. Lots of power to get on plane, but it felt unstable in turns which was disconcerting. Maybe it was my lack of...

BWR, thanks for the pics. Very nice work! Those seats look awesome. Maybe I should just buy two more like I have on the pedestals, and mount to small boxes like you did. That way I could forget the custom cushion business.

You and my son are on the same track. I think both of you are trying to cause me grief. My idea of a cushion on a milk crate is _way_ quicker to implement! Seriously though, I'm still up in the air on the whole bench idea. I think I prefer the idea of the corner boxes with padded tops that...
