Flipped back right side up. Ground down any patching on the upper transom and decided to install the new transom wood. Definitely did not slide right in. Broke a rubber mallet, so I decided to use a sledge with a chunk of 2x scrap in-between. Still beat up my freshly glued/sealed transom...

I'm no expert at marine fuel tanks, but if it holds pressure, I'd clean it up and use it.

I guess you can test with a magnet for steel vs aluminum. Definitely pressure test low, doesn't take much. I'm guessing you can find a diy procedure somewhere.

    68 Offshore restoration

I had a reason for originally using two backing plates, now I cannot remember what that reason was. So I popped out all of the screws except for two super close to other holes. Those two got cut flush with the outside. The rest got installed from the outside with a backing nut. These will be...

If it was me, I'd pressure test that tank. If it held pressure then I would clean up the outside, and then figure out a solvent for the inside, using it until it ran mostly clear. What material is the tank made from?

Started on the transom patching today. First part was to place a first layer patch on the i side and match drill every hole. Then I countersunk each hole. Epoxy putty was smeared between the patch and transom, and then countersink screws placed through each hole, smeared in epoxy putty...

I may be weird but there's something satisfying about the look of glossy solid colors on riveted metal.

The weather forecast yesterday was for no rain, so I got the bottom all painted. Woke up this morning and there was rain on it... Good thing I used enamel hardener, so it was cured enough to not take damage. Ended up putting the second coat on in the dark last night, missed a few places, but...

Ripped apart the front of my trailer, prepped for welding today. After lowering my trailer I realized that the tilt mechanism just isn't going to help me, but is a weak point. After welding that joint I will add some stabilizers from the axle crossmember up as far as they will go for better...

I've been using pc7 as filler in places, which is glass reinforced, as well as some other unknown fillers. It's tough stuff, doesn't shatter when hit with a hammer and hard to clean off the mixing tools. Pc11 I think is supposed to be the "marine" version, maybe more flexible, or made to be...

Honestly, I should modify my previous comment. My main concern with a pit is if it's large enough to cause the base metal to be weak. Since there are holes all through the boat, if it's not at a riveted joint or an obvious high stress path, it probably won't be a concern. The second issue...

Hard to say. No matter what I would use the nylon brush to clean out the pits, maybe acid clean, and then fill with a fortified epoxy. If the pits are over a keel strip, I wouldn't worry any further. If they are deep or in a seemingly high stress location, I'd look into patching. Deep and...

Where are the pits located? That will determine what level of remediation is needed. Also how deep?

You'll have to figure out if the rivet is through the hull and a rib, hull rib and keel/strake, or hull and keel. I don't remember thicknesses off the top of my head, but for my late 60s boat, hull was about .09, ribs also I think. You may be able to find some 1980 literature that lists...

    1982 MR 180

I'm not sure the dimensional difference between my late 60s 18' hull and yours, but I found some low profile belly fuel tanks used on ebay that looked like they would work, though much larger capacity than I wanted. I decided instead that I will probably get a 15-20 gallon aluminum fuel cell...

Got all the bottom rivets coat-it'ed and gave each seam a good line as well. In reality only the bow seams and the chine seams do much for sealing, but it feels like a more complete job this way. Also patched some dents with pc7, once cured I'll sand flush. I'd say the hardest part is over...

If outside access only for now, just find 18-8 closed end rivets and 5200 them

As a follow up since I quickly typed out my reply last night, If it's a 3/16" hole and you need to buy fasteners anyway, I would highly recommend just getting a dimpled (2xxx series) aluminum solid rivet and finding an air hammer or someone who can set them. The closed end pop rivets end up...
