    68 Offshore restoration

Got windshields on for the most part. The rear brace on the near side of the picture is just loosely on, I am debating removing or shortening this brace, has anyone done something similar and how stable was the windshield after?

    68 Offshore restoration

Not as productive of a weekend as expected, life priorities and being a "responsible adult" and all that... I did manage to get instruments and switch panel in place, throttle box attached, motor mounting plates cut for the new configuration, and with my dad's help the engine installed. The...

    198x SS-150 rebuild

I wasn't fixing anything, but ended up bolting some plate on each side to build up my transom on the sides. I just used epoxy putty between plate and transom sheet, then screws to clamp. Turned out very solid. You could do something similar, adjust your transom shape if you want to. If you...

Burned up wire in my outboard

It's odd that a sensor would overheat like that. Check for signs of frayed wire where any input may have shorted. I suppose if there's contacts inside they could have become damaged causing it to short as well. As to if you need it, I would make sure it isn't required as a limit switch...

    1961 Starcraft Holiday gunwale damage

It looks like the outer "rail" just needs straightened, then the rest could fasten back together normally. It appears that the damage is only on that rail, but check if the hull wall has any denting as well. My rule of thumb is if I need to bend aluminum back in place like that, I try to add...

Inherited new boat. Unsure what it is exactly

My thought is that weathering will affect the wood more than microbial rot. The chemicals won't protect against the weather.

    68 Offshore restoration

Progress from the last couple weeks. Got the rear deck carpeted and added some flashed panels over the splashwell, installed but need to figure out better screws for the back edges. Still needs some trim added where the carpet meets the splashwell edge. Seat boxes are installed. Rear seats...

    1963 21' holiday outboard

Sometime boat HINs and trailer VINs find their way "reallocated". Could be what happened here.

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

I used/am using open office "draw" to create mine, the equivalent of microsoft visio, I think. Like a more capable version of paint. You could use the shape and line tools in PowerPoint or equivalent, even. That said, mine are not snapped to a grid or measured/laid out nicely relative to...

    StarCraft kingfisher rebuild

My recommendation is to pack every practical spot possible with foam. Better to have it and not need it. If I find myself in such an emergency, I want the boat to float as high as possible.

    68 Offshore restoration

I guess I am looking for low cost and low profile, too. Trying not to add height. There are some simple sliding mounts, just aluminum plate in a track. I might try that and add a spring plunger to maintain solid placement.

    68 Offshore restoration

Well I tried to test out the front seats, without the swivel in place yet. Even without a dashboard I can tell my knees will hit as is. I think I might try to add a blister over the top for instruments, and raise the dash that way. This would save moving the seat back so far. Or I will need...

    68 Offshore restoration

A little progress. Carpeted the seat boxes, starting to plan out their location. I'd like to keep them forward of the deck board seam, but might be a little tight getting in that way.

    68 Offshore restoration

Rivnuts into the aluminum stringers and supports. I have stainless countersunk machine screws and washers holding the floor in, then. Technically I still need to remove the screws one by one so I can cut a countersink in the washers, right now the screws stick out a little. Doesn't stop me...

    68 Offshore restoration

My goal is to give the deck side a small raised seal, and give the lid a matching outer seal to make it airtight. I'll then test it with a vacuum to see if it worked, if not, then I'll probably go check valve. First I need to figure out what kind of material I make the flange around the lid...

    68 Offshore restoration

I was able to paint the extra areas along the gunnels and under the console before my 7 day recoat window ran out. I also managed to build seat boxes for the driver and front passenger, as well as get a good start on the rear casting deck/seating area. Front seat boxes are done minus...

    198x SS-150 rebuild

3M has several levels of contact cement. If I was carpeting over aluminum I would use a weaker level just to tack it down, then mechanically fasten the edges. Then if you need to work on the metal later on it doesn't become a project just to remove the carpet.

    68 Offshore restoration

Painted and installed the interior sheet metal this weekend. Also painted hull sections that I expect to show after everything is done. I was unsure if the inside gunnel walls will be covered in hdpe afterwards so didn't paint them, I think I may just paint them and call it good though...

    68 Offshore restoration

For cheap plywood, it should looks good with a coat of oil and varnish! I am thinking of using this plywood for the inside of a camper build floating in my mind. Today I finished forming the reduced splashwell and riveted to the transom. It's a bit crooked, but I think once I attach the top...

    68 Offshore restoration

Not really a need but a good extra measure. I've calculated that even the bilge full of foam won't float a fully loaded boat at the deck level (2600 lbs per factory label). Every extra bit helps, a full bilge should float about 1500 lbs. Looking at above deck spots to stuff more foam.
