Force 85 outboard barely idles and stalls

I would start with the basics first.....compression check (post the numbers). Do a spark test to make sure you got fire on all cylinders. These tests don't cost anything and if there is a problem with either test, fix THAT first. The prop coming off wouldn't cause any problems with timing...

Getting old and losing friends sucks

Many try to fill the void using facebook, and other social media. But "liking" posts and tweets is not the same as picking up the phone and actually talking to them. Got rid of FB 5 years ago and haven't looked back......

    Chrysler 75hp, need direction.

I ended up doing the same......set them all at 1 1/4......runs great at that setting so didn't see any reason to mess with it further. Had it not run well at that setting, would have done like Frank A. suggested. And I know for sure they're not set below 1 turn out from seated......

85 force lower unit drain plug

Take nothing for granted when acquiring a new to you engine. He may be honest and "done" the carb (there are 3) but no telling if he did a good job or knew what he was doing. (y)

Most common problems with 4 cyl / 3cyl chrysler outboards

Keep an eye out for a good parts motor.......one that is not running, has a blown PH, etc......can be had pretty cheap. So far I haven't had any problem finding parts for my '78......using ebay, Franz Marine, marineengine.com, MasterTech, boats.net, Crowley, etc. Consumable parts like gaskets...

1998 Force 90 ELPT by Mercury Marine

Before condemning the motor, do as racerone suggested.....open it up and take a look at the cylinders and pistons. Pics currently can't be loaded on this site for technical reasons but you could make a youtube video showing the internals/engine running, by posting the link on here. No money...

Don't think they have fixed the posting pics problem yet on this forum.......

1998 Force 90 ELPT by Mercury Marine

Your compression numbers are a little low but pretty even across the board. If the cylinders aren't scored/damaged then not sure a rebuild would be necessary. Bottom line on these engines.....you really have to do your own work on these....nobody around here would even look at an old Force or...

Engine stopped high end on water

In regard to running WOT-in gear-on the muffs.......not a good idea. Using a test wheel/prop and a large test tank would be the way to go.......or put the boat in the water......the prop needs a load on it to keep things from "blowin-up".

Where is the front line on trim tilt hydraulic pump

With just 2 hard lines could it be just a tilt only system? Not sure what that black hose is.......

Where is the front line on trim tilt hydraulic pump

Got this same diagram from MasterTech......for my setup everything is right except the green arrow pointing to the third hole on the VB......on both my original and rebuilt VBs that third hole is plugged and the line goes in the fourth hole (farthest from the transom). IIRC my manual shows that...

Where do you get your parts?

Also.....MasterTech, marineengine.com, Franz Marine (not cheap but usually has what you need), boats.net......

1990 90HP Force Water Pump Woes

If it is in fact an L-drive engine, they were known as the Hell-drive.....for good reason. :ROFLMAO:

1990 90HP Force Water Pump Woes

These parts show to be NLA......but may show up as used parts somewhere (ebay, etc).

    tilt & trim

If you decide to repair the VB I wouldn't mess with the pump part.....there is nothing to fix in there and may never get it back together if taken apart.....FYI

1990 90HP Force Water Pump Woes

Found this.....part#697706-1 is the same as part#818074A1.....for an L-Drive gearcase cover.

1990 90HP Force Water Pump Woes

Without a parts diagram to show what part#24 is, not sure what you're looking for. Both marineengine.com and Crowley show part #24 is a gear housing cover w/seal part#FA721706......and is this an L-Drive? A search for part#697706-1 came up empty.....

    tilt & trim

Use SAE 30 non detergent oil......fill when engine is fully down. Tilt system won't hold under power, that is where the trim system works. Regarding the valve body, I would try to repair the original one using the info in those repair threads.......the replacements available on ebay, etc. are...

    tilt & trim

The tilt and trim work independently.....when the trim reaches it's limit the tilt cylinder takes over. If your engine bleeds down (won't stay up) take a look at the top of this forum in the FAQ section......there are several threads about trouble shooting the T&T system there......
