Force 85 outboard barely idles and stalls

Hey all,
I have a 1984 Bayliner Capri with the Force 85 outboard on it. I've had a series of issues with it that were resolved one by one. First, I replaced the impeller, but missed the keyway to lock it in place. So, when I went to launch the boat, the overheat alarm went off and I shut it down immediately. Pulled the boat back out of the water and had a mechanic come over to fix the impeller. Got it back in the water (I live on the lake with a dock off my back patio) and went fishing. When I went to move spots, the boat wouldn't go into gear and move at all. Had to be towed back into the marina and pulled the boat back out of the water. Discovered that my prop had spun off the center hub and was gone. I got a new prop and installed it according to instructions for a Michigan Wheel style prop. I pulled the spark plugs and changed them out, too. The original ones were black and needed to go. I launched the boat again and it would die every time I put it into gear. I was able to get it to go into gear finally and went around the lake a little bit. Ran fine at wide open and even idled properly. Docked it and left it for the day. Went back out to take it out later that same day and it will barely hold idle and won't go into gear at all without stalling. I've run SeaFoam through it in a gallon of gas, but no improvement. I'm going to pull it out of the water again and work on it in my driveway, but I'm kind of at a loss for what to look for. Could spinning the prop off have caused this? Did that mess up the timing of the carbs? Could the idle have just fell off without anyone messing with it? I'm trying to look at what I can before I have to pay for a mechanic to do it for me. Any help and/or insights you guys can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would start with the basics first.....compression check (post the numbers). Do a spark test to make sure you got fire on all cylinders. These tests don't cost anything and if there is a problem with either test, fix THAT first.

The prop coming off wouldn't cause any problems with timing, carbs, or idle. If comp and spark are ok, then you probably got a fuel/carb/adjustment problem.

If you don't have one already, get a factory shop manual.

Okay, topgun, thank you for the reply. I'll start there and see what I see. I'll post results when I have them.
