    Question about warranty service

I have a question about warranty service that came to mind after reading another thread here by Meddyn. I have a Mercury painted Tohatsu 6HP for my sailboat that I bought new. I also know that all Mercury engines 30 HP and below, are made by Tohatsu. This may seem like a dumb question, but...

    Towing a tube with a 9ft SIB?

I have a Bombard 9' SIB with the wood floor and inflatable V keel. My transom does not have towing eyes on it. I have a Johnson 9.9 running on it now, which performs great. I'd like to know what I could do to pull a tube. Don't want to go super fast, just want to give the kids a fun ride :)

Broke my gas tank, where can I find a new pick up tube?

I have a 6 gallon portable tank made bt Attwood. It's an older tank but still in good shape. This weekend I was removing the fuel line from the tank and the connection broke off. It's the plastic piece that's part of the pick up tube that broke off. Anyone know where I can get a new pick up...

New to me, older Johnson 15hp

Re: New to me, older Johnson 15hp Here's what you are looking for on the tag (if there is one). It's usually on the transom bracket on the tiller handle side. Here's what the welch plug should look like: I'd hate to give some more bad news, but you may have a 9.9 HP. They were the same...

Evinrude Fisherman 6hp fuel line source?

Re: Evinrude Fisherman 6hp fuel line source? A standard fuel line with primer bulb and OMC fittings should fit your engine and tank. They are "two prong". (see attached picture) One connector, the shorter spring loaded one, is for the fuel. The longer one with the groove cut into it is to lock...

1986 9.9 Johnson, need help setting the idle

I have a 1986 9.9 that I just got running again (I just bought the engine this past winter, good deal). The carb has the metal float bowl that had water in it so it had rusted up and clogged nearly everything. A carb kit, a thorough cleaning, new fuel lines, and she's running fairly well. The...

Lures that are easy for kids to use?

My older two boys (8 and 6 years old) want to start using lures more like dad does, instead of night crawlers. I want to give them lures that that are easy for them to use and don't require a huge amount of skill or dexterity so they don't get frustrated. I'm think of topwater lures like the...

    Using steam to clean parts

I have a steam cleaner to use in my garage now, and I was wondering if it would be useful for cleaning engine parts? I thought it would be useful for my rebuild project.

    2002 Nissan 3.5A (2 stroke) prop removal?

Re: 2002 Nissan 3.5A (2 stroke) prop removal? I got it off!!! I used a wooden wedge and got it between the prop and gear case, and used the rubber mallet to get the prop off. The shear pin was broken in three pieces. The shaft was slightly corroded, but is straight. It did have...

    2002 Nissan 3.5A (2 stroke) prop removal?

I'm doing my preseason maintenance and am having a little trouble with my little 3.5. I have pulled the cotter pin and kinda expected the prop to slide off. The prop did not come off. Some gentle pulling and twisting has not done anything either. How is this prop attached? And how do you pull...

    Cotter pin sizes?

I need to go buy new cotter pins for two of my motors while I have the props off (pre season prop shaft inspection). Does anyone know what size the propeller cotter pin is on a 2002 Nissan 3.5 HP 2 stroke? Whoever had it before me, put a very large pin that looks like its the wrong pin...

Why did OMC like the number 8?

Just a curious thought that occurred to me. I see lots of posts here about 18, 28, 48, 88, etc, HP engines. Why the number 8 instead of an even number? Just seems a bit odd to me.

How to get this seal out (picture icluded)

I have two seals that need to be removed since I am replacing all of the lower unit seals of my 72 Johnson 6 HP (in the middle of a rebuild of the entire motor). These 2 seals are located at the prop head bearing and the impeller housing retainer (pictured). What is the best way to get these...

1972 Johnson paint question, which green paint do I need?

Re: 1972 Johnson paint question, which green paint do I need? I found some posts here in the forum asking about that gold paint. Seems it was used on the Evinrudes of the same era, and was indeed gold. (found this on the old OMC site: www.old-omc.de ) I'm about to give up the idea of...

Wrist pin retaining clips (circlips), can they be re-used?

I'm going to need new pistons and rings for my rebuild of a 72 Johnson 6 HP (the wrist pins are still good). Do I need to buy new wrist pin retaining clips? At $30 for 4 clips (from Evinrude's website store), that's kinda steep ($7.50 for a little spring steel clip). If they are normally...

1972 Johnson paint question, which green paint do I need?

I found this OMC paint chart here and I am quite confused as to what paint in need to buy. My outboard is a 72, and is painted green. Which color green do I have? Is it the forest green, or the green (from the attached paint chart)? The years listed don't match what I have, and I want to make...

Sealing crankcase halves, which sealant? 1972 Johnson 6 HP

My service manual calls for Adhesive M for the crankcase halves (3M # 847), but i have read here that Gel Seal (Loctite 518) may be a better sealant to use. Which one should I use?

What is this plate for? 72 Johnson 6 HP

In the midst of my rebuild on this motor. In the midsection, just underneath the power head, is this plate. Right under where the exhaust and cooling water from the exhaust cavity come down. I took some pictures, one with the plate and one without. With the plate off, I can see an access hole...

A modern prop for an older Johnson?

Re: A modern prop for an older Johnson? Here's some pictures to illustrate what I'm referring to. The first two shots are of the propeller on my 2007 Mercury 6 HP (which is a longshaft that's used on my sailboat). The last two shots are of the 72 Johnson 6 HP prop. The Johnson prop has...
