A modern prop for an older Johnson?

I have a Johnson 6 HP, that is nearly 40 years old (it's a 72) with it's original 3 blade aluminum prop. I also have a new 6 HP Mercury, and looking at the 2 props side by side, I am amazed at how far prop technology has come. Anyway, I'd like to get a newer, more efficient prop for that old...

Pictures of an old Johnson, what did I find?

Saw this while I was at a training school for the USCG. It is an opposed 2 cylinder, had a gas tank mounted to it, and the exhaust appeared to come out the back under the tank with three outlet pipes. Didn't see a model number or horsepower rating. I took these shots with my camera phone so...

Question about wrist pins / rebuild

I am rebuilding a 72 Johnson 6 HP. Are the wrist pins re-usable? My service manual does not give the specifications for the diameter of the wrist pins. I took a lot of measurements of the original pins with a micrometer, and based on my measurements, both pins are both perfectly round. Both...

    Buying new pistons

I have a few questions about buying new pistons. I am in the middle of rebuilding my 72 Johnson 6HP. The old pistons were scored, so they are getting replaced. 1. Can I re-use the wrist pins? The originals look fine, no scratches or scuffs. 2. When I order pistons, do they typically come with...

How does my gear case look?

Took apart my gearcase today on my 72 6HP Johnson. I found a few small shavings on the magnet, and I saw a little wear on the clutch dogs. I took pictures of the important stuff. I think everything looks all right (besides the old seals). I had to take it apart because I am converting this...

    New 6HP charging system

I see that the new (2011) Tohatsu 6HP now comes with battery charging capability. Will this system be able to be retrofitted to an older 6HP (like my 2007)?

Painting a Johnson to look like an Evinrude, or vice versa

Just curious to see if anyone has ever done this. I am rebuilding an older 6 HP Johnson, that will be used on my inflatable boat. It was a random thought that I had considering that nearly every OMC engine was identical except for the paint and decals. Was thinking that Evinrude blue would...

72 Johnson 6 HP, converting from long shaft to short shaft, source for parts?

I have a 72 Johnson 6 HP long shaft, that came off of my old sailboat. It needed work, so I'm rebuilding it. In the mean time I had bought a new 6HP for my current sailboat, and it is a long shaft. So I don't have a need for two long shaft engines. I have an inflatable dinghy in need of a...

    Stripers and plastic eels

I'm somewhat new to striper fishing. Most of my fishing is freshwater for bass and trout. I'm fishing in the Thames River in CT (brackish), near piers and pilings. I caught one last week on a plastic 10" eel (fish was 16"). Don't quite remember what I did. Should I fish the eels towards the...

Removing driveshaft from lower unit, 72 Johnson 6HP

I think I have read here before that the driveshaft simply pulls up and out of the lower unit. I'm not sure if that is true or not. I am rebuilding my 72 6HP, so I have the main parts (power head, mid section, lower unit) seperated from each other. This engine is a long shaft that I am...

Had an exciting/heart stopping mishap tonight

I have 2 boats. Our sailboat, which is on a mooring, and an inflatable dinghy. Earlier tonight I was on my way back from the sailboat to the dinghy dock. It was dark, and the water was flat calm. I was going about 5-6 knots (it only has a 3.5 HP outboard on it), and I ran over a railroad tie...

2007 Mercuy (Tohatsu) 6HP flush plug

So in the little toolkit that came with my 6HP is a flush plug that screws into the engine after you pull a specific bolt as shown in the manual. That process looks simple and staightforward. What the manual does not show, is how you are supposed to attach a hose to the flush fitting in the...

Is there a way to pin the steering straight on a 6HP Mercury/Tohatsu?

I posted this last week in the Mercury forum with no hits or replies so I thought I would try here since my Merc is a Tohatsu with a different paint job. I have a 2007 long shaft Mercury 6HP on the back of my sailboat and I have a interesting issue with it. I normally use it for motoring off my...

Can I pin the steering on my 07 Merc 6HP?

I have a 2007 long shaft Mercury 6HP on the back of my sailboat and I have a interesting issue with it. I normally use it for motoring off my mooring and usually use my rudder for steering. As such I have the steering friction cranked in to keep the motor centered fore and aft. The only time I...

    SHT with my tackle box

So I was fishing on Sunday, and after I finished changing the lure I was using (at my truck's tailgate), I closed the tackle box. Secured my lure to the pole to walk down to the shore, and then picked up my tackle box  not realizing that I neglected to latch the lid shut  . I managed...

Bracket to raise my outboard 5 inches?

Does anyone know of a company that makes a bracket to raise up my outboard 5 inches? I have a Bombard (by Zodiac) inflatable with high pressure V hull that can fit up to a 8 HP outboard. I bought this dinghy for my sailboat which is kept on a mooring. I have an old Johnson 6 HP and a new...

Low speed needle tip stuck in carburetor

I removed the low speed needle from my 72 6HP Johnson carb. When I looked at it I thought the tip looked funny. Sure enough when I peeked in the carb where the needle sits, I saw the broken tip stuck in its seat. I don't see a clear way of removing it. Anyone have any tips on getting it out?

    Rebuilding my outboard, anti-seize?

As I rebuild my engine, just wondering about using anti-seize. I had quite a few bolts stuck/seized during teardown, and I do not want to have that happen again, should I ever have to tear down the motor again. I have always preferred to use anti-seize on fasteners. This is my first engine...
