Lower crankshaft seal spring 72 Johnson 6HP

The spring that was in my lower crank seal was broken when I pulled my powerhead out. It was already rusted, and I don't know if it broke when I pulled it or if it was already broken. I was at our local hardware store yesterday to pick up some lock washers when I spied a nice stock of springs...

    Piston part #s, I'm confused

I had pulled the pistons out of my 72 6HP Johnson the other day, and now I have part number confusion. The shop.evinrude site shows my piston part # as 376994. The part # that is cast into the pistons that I just pulled is 303338. I can't find 303338 anywhere online, and I CAN buy 376994 from...

    Are these pistons trashed?

I got the pistons out of my 72 Johnson 6HP, and have some questions about them. I had decided to pull them when I noticed some scoring on the lower piston, looking at it through the exhaust ports. After I pulled them both I noticed there was more scoring on them than initially thought. I want...

Didn't know where else to put this, since it could apply to any make of outboard. Mods, feel free to move this if this forum isn't a good place for it. I am rebuilding a 70's 6HP Johnson outboard. Whoever owned it before me had used it in salt/brackish water, and neglected to flush it. Fast...

How to find the age of my motor with out the correct ID tag

I am rebuilding a what I think is a 70's vintage 6 HP long shaft Johnson. Here is my dilemma. According to the ID tag on the transom bracket, it is a 6R77A, which tells me it's a 1977. A few problems with that though: - The outboard is painted in Johnson green, except for the transom bracket...

'76 Johnson 6HP shift lever hard to move

I am in the process of rebuilding a 76 6HP long shaft. It came with my sailboat, and has not run in at least 10 years. It has a very hard gear shift. Doesn't matter what direction, forward to neutral, neutral to reverse. It feel's like its very tight. I have the lower unit off to service the...

Adding a kill switch to a 76 Johnson 6 HP

I have a 6HP 76 Johnson that I want to put a kill switch on. I have a good idea on what I need to do, just want to know what I need to ground. It has points ignition. Do I ground the coils or the condensors (capacitors) to kill it?
