That rot is NOT a problem if you are----1 on a small lake in calm weather with houses all around.----2 You and your guests are good swimmers.-----3 If your radio can get help in 2 minutes----4 another boat is within shouting distance.
Broken piston ring.----Overheating.----Ignition too far advanced.-----Water pump tell tale not changed to come off top of block per service bulletin in 1994?----Wrong prop?----Poor quality oil.-----Water pump impeller not changed every 5 years.
Motors were NOT white in 1975.----Clearly is a newer ( 1988 3 cylinder ? ) motor.----No such thing as a " temperamental " motor if it is in good condition.----Picture of cowling may help identify.
Depends on where you do your boating.-----Depends on how careful you are.-----Do you have a chart plotter?-----Hitting a rock with stainless can do a lot of damage to lower units these days.
This spring holds the choke butter flapper OPEN at full throttle .----Keeps them from fluttering and wearing out the shaft.----Someone else can likely post a picture for you,
Shop that I worked at many years ago did one as a " something to do " project over the winter.----Shop rates today make work like that very expensive.----Doing this work yourself is a good way to build what you want.
