    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

16” of heavy/wet snow on Monday. The power went off in the AM and hasn’t been back. There was a travel ban in place for a while. To top it off, a tree fell across our road and nobody can get past. The road has not been plowed because of the tree.

    Electronic steering

Outboard conversions are going to have some form of electric steering. Either electric/ hydraulic or fully electric. There will be a sensor in the steering mechanism and an actuator at the engine. Stable electrical power is critical. Most systems being installed are fully electric, which...

    SNOW Common Sense

We are in the thick of it , , , probably 8-10 more hours. Winds are 30 sustained, gusts to 58 mph. The outer Cape (Chatham) has 50 mph sustained 70 mph gusts. . The lights have been flickering most of the morning. I'm holding off on any more fiberglass work in case we loose power (since...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

BTW - with all that glassing of the core sections, the transom was H-E-A-V-Y .. . . I had to put my beer down to get it into place :ROFLMAO:

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I finished off things inside the extension and moved over to the transom. I got it set in place and will be doing fillets tomorrow. . . Splashwell openings . . . . . The transom gets about 8 layers of glass (1708, 1808 alternating layers). Tabbing to the stringers will be about 5 layers . ...

    1994 5L EFI Volvo penta

I've had starter solenoids (I think they are actually referred to as slave solenoids) be working 30 minutes before launch and then at the boat ramp, it was a no-go. They seem to fail at the least convenient times.

Got it . . . I thought you had bought something new and we missed it. Perhaps the solenoid failed.

Wow . . . is this a current boat or a new-2-you boat? It seems like we may have missed a few beats.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

More progress . . . I got the gussets installed . . . . . Then I went on to the 'bottom plate' of the bracket portion. . . . . I did traditional fillet for this tabbing rather than the angle-cut foam. This is the first layer of tabbing (1708). It will get an 1808 layer and then another...

    Port, not larboard.

I've thought that 'port' was designated because in the days of Viking ships that is the side commonly used as the dock side, since the 'steer board' was on the other side of the boat and better kept free to maneuver. And the 'steer board' side because 'starboard' over time . . .

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I'm getting close to completing the internal tabbing and related work on the inside of the planing surface. One thing that I had planned was to have some gussets tied to the stringers. The Naval Architect (NA) said that I did not really need the gussets, but I had already cut and shaped the...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The Honda BF350 'U' (30") shaft motors weigh about 775 lbs. My design calculations were based on 700 lbs/engine. Out of curiosity, I ran the force calculations again using 800 lbs as the engine weight. Forces from engine thrust were already figured using a 350HP engine. Not to...

    LiFePO Batteries ???

Winter 2026 update . . . I've kept the batteries inside for the winter. . . 4-1/2 months so far. I thought to check the voltages today. Each of the 3 batteries was sitting at 13.22-13.24 volts. (y) I have them charging now for a 'wee bit' so as to go the distance on the remaining winter.
