    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Not a dumb question at all . . . Yes, it does allow the surface to cure to some extent. It sort of depends how long I keep the plastic on there and there are usually a few small air pockets that develop. I sand the surfaces between layers just to be sure of adhesion. The Admiral noticed...

1985 Bayliner 2750 Ciera Sunbridge Resto

Nice updates . . . looks like you have been busy. I noted your safe configuration of cinder blocks when you had the boat off of the trailer. (y)

Maybe my turn for new boat time

Wow . . . Your new boat has been a never-ending saga. Lots of gremlins so far.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Commentary . . . I must say that doing a 'male-mold' approach is a lot slower than using a (female) mold as far as fiberglassing is concerned. Mostly because there is some amount of prep work (trimming, sanding, smoothing) before you can/should put the next layer on. In a female mold (like...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Another progress update . . . I added a second layer of fiberglass (2415 stitchmat in this case) to the planing surface (upside down 'V' shaped portion, Joe). Don't tell anybody, but I used plastic drop cloth to cover the surface after it was wet-out and pulled it tight in all areas to give...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The entire exterior now has 1 layer of fiberglass on it. . . Now to prep for additional layers . . .

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

For those who had asked the question about those funny pieces of plastic . . . Here is one of the corners with the plastic stretched around it . . . . . The suction of the resin holds it in place. This works well for edges and corners.

95 Sea Ray 230 Sundancer stringer repair

Even though the engine mounts are through-bolted, they have so little strength, being tied in with CSM. Probably a wood core as well. If a boat does not have these things holding the engine, I don't buy it. . Have you done the thing with a moisture meter yet? . . . or would that be...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Here is the thing once the resin has cured and all the corner stuff removed Tomorrow will be the side pieces.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Those loose pieces are drop cloth plastic . . . I use them to hold the corners (and other areas as needed) tight while the resin is curing.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

OK . . . this took a while. . . . at least 2 hours, maybe 3. The first piece of exterior fiberglass (96" x 50"). It covers the planing surface and a little bit down the sides. I mixed up 3 1-quart containers of resin and activated them as I went. I was figuring it might need a little more...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

My apologies to @redneck joe for the 'upside downess' over the next few days while I glass the external surfaces. Yesterday was corner and edge rounding day, along with the thickened fiber paste for smoothing out the transom and forming a large fillet at the back of the planing surface. . ...

95 Sea Ray 230 Sundancer stringer repair

IIRC, @alldodge did a partial transom restore on his Formula 27 about 8-10 years ago. If the wet/rot is localized at the bottom of the transom, a partial replacement may be do-able. . . a judgement call for sure.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

It was Plan B . . . The snow had softened up with the warmer weather to a point where I was able to clear out under the gantry . . . . . I made special dolly to fit the extension bracket . . . . and stuck it under there, so I could roll the E-B out of the garage to under the gantry. . . ...

95 Sea Ray 230 Sundancer stringer repair

I had rot in both of my Formula boats (a 242 and a 330). It is a 1990's (and earlier) thing across most of the boat brands. First thing to do would be to determine the extent of moisture and rot. I know that you have exposed some of the stringer, but the issues tend to go further than you...
