    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Lifting Update . . . I bought a shop hoist to lift the extension bracket. Some assembly was required. Then, I put a couple of U bolts in through the top plate to hook onto. . . I figured if I can put it on dollies instead of blocks, I can move the thing around as needed. . . . EXCEPT . . ...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The top plate laminate (Post #888) is 2415. I may be adding some 1708 in the area that will be 'exposed' behind the swim deck. the rest of the surface will have a plethora of through-bolts.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

This is the biggest single piece of fiberglass (50 x 90") and took a long time . . . probably 2 hours start-2-finish. 100 oz. of resin. . . I initially tried to soak the resin into the cloth top-down . . . that didn't work. So, a quick change on the fly to soak the Coosa board with resin and...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I do have some micrometers that I could break out, but the handy electronic one is good enough . . . I'm just checking my laminate dimensions . . . The Coosa measures right at 1.00" . I have the following laminates on the transom now: 3 x 1708 (0.045" typical thickness) 0.135" =...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Yes as I was taking measurements, I was wondering how flat the outside of the transom should be so as not to distort/crack the engine bracket. The straight edge is probably the way to go.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Happy Friday . . . Of course, every day is the same for me, being retired. I'm getting ready to glass the top. It has been a good cutting and roll-out platform, but now it's time for its glass. . . . . I need to 'flip' this thing over to do some corner rounding and probably will...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I put a layer of 2415 cloth on the transom today. The thickness is at 1.40" +/- . . I'll be looking to get into the 1.90" range. Probably something like . . . 1708/1808/2415/1708/1808 to get to around 1.95".

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Quick Update . . . I got the 'top cap' rounded and put a layer of glass (1708) up and over the transom. There will be quite a few more layers to go. . . I still needed to put another layer of tabbing on the transom/stringer joint. So, I decided to try out the 2415 cloth. . . It actually...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The 1808 is pretty similar to the 1708, but perhaps the strands are not as tightly stitched. The problem with the 1708 is that it is strongest in the -45˚/+45˚ directions. Often you need a mix of cloths so that you get strength in all directions (-45,0,+45,90). Also, if you need strength in a...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

More transom work . . . I am planning on a top cap of 1/2" rounded Coosa for the transom. But, before I added the cap I wanted to put several 'bands' of fiberglass (1808) in the areas between where the 2 splashwells will go. These will provide about 10,000 lbs of strength directly in line...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I got my supplies this AM . . . a few hours of driving but worth it. 10 gallons of VE resin 10 yds 50" 1708 10 yds 50" 1808 8 yds 50" 2415 MEKP for the 10 gallons Gelcoat Finishing wax (for the gelcoat) $840 . . . Probably would have been $1,200 ish through my other sources. My project...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I was never concerned, knowing you got your hands full. Tomorrow is fillets and tabbing of the transom. Tuesday, I am going to pick up fiberglass supplies in MA and CT. Hopefully this will be it for the major purchasing. Since I'm picking up the materials, I am getting the 5 gallon pails for...

    Getting impatient

Every time I look at my boat (in the yard) the snow gets deeper . . . I'll be happy if I can start doing stuff on the boat by April.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

In other news . . . I came across a local supplier of fiberglass materials. Not sure why I didn't find them with all my prior searching, but their prices are really good . . . and they offer a discount for cash, etc. Their main business is fiberglass parts and repairs. Looks like they...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Internet is back . . . firing on all cylinders (almost) . . . I'm just about to run out of heating oil and based on my call to the local oil company they are finding it difficult to care less about it. :sneaky: They told me that I use 10 gallons a day . . . the tank is 275 gallons. OK...

    SNOW Common Sense

Some quick math says I have about 4,000 lbs of snow (water) on my boat . . . figuring from the several storms I have the equivalent of 3" of water on the accumulated . . . might be a little less, but not much.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The power came back on last night . . . not sure what time. the internet is still down, so I am using my phone as a hot spot. (only 2 bars of signal, but better than nothing) So, probably 84 hours (+/-) without power. I ran the generator about 14 hours a day . . . so, 55-60 hours on the...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Quick Update . . . It seems like emergency preparedness is not a thing where I live. I know the severity of the weather has been a factor, but these type of weather incidents happen every few years, so there is a lot of history to learn from. Perhaps learning is not a thing either. It will...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

It appears that the town I live in can’t get their act together in responding to a snow emergency. So, I decided to wire my oil burner to the generator, because it could be a few more days without power. Things are warming up, now that the main heat is going again. I just hope my fuel supply...
