Any Transom experts here. I have a Transom Rebuilding Question.

Is it a bad idea to fill in the screw heads that are counter sunk, and leave them in? A carpenter friend of mine said it won't harm it if the screws are in and sealed over.

Stern Drive transom lower right bolt fell out

Critical and yet accurate post. If that bolt breaks off, there was inertia and most likely a rotted transom. It happened to me when I struck a sand bar, I broke off that same lower bolt, and by that it broke a piece of the transom mount where that bolt broke off. I had to remove everything...

Any Transom experts here. I have a Transom Rebuilding Question.

Question: What should I use to fill the screw holes in when I glued it together previously. Is it a bad idea to leave the screws in and then fill over them? I was thinking if I removed the screws to fill the holes with Titebond 3 glue or 3M 5200. Your thoughts.

Thanks, I like the idea of the makeshift icing bag. I saw that on YouTube, I forgot about that way with the bag.

What's the best way to apply the peanut butter resin to the transom?

    Question about water in bilge

Last year I took on some water maybe 4 gallons or so in a 4 hour span, until I struck a sandbar pretty hard and my partially rotted transom took on a lot more water and I almost sank the boat, it came in thru the gimbal housing and the partially rotted transom. I'm rebuilding it as we speak. A...

    Question about water in bilge

Also, Tap all around the rear transom area on the outside of the boat by the sterndrive and everywhere else back there on the rear transom. Hopefully the transom is solid. You will want to hear solid noises, no hollow sounds.

    Question about water in bilge

While it's in the water, look thoroughly all around the engine area for leaks while the engine is off, then look for leaks with the engine on. If it leaks while the engine is running , it could be just a loose exhaust no hub fitting clamp. I had water in my bilge also, it was coming in from...

Any Transom experts here. I have a Transom Rebuilding Question.

Question- When notching out the steering swing on the new transom, what's the best way to do it exactly? Is there a template I can use etc. Am I going in on an angle with a keyhole saw? I'm confused... The second image shows the area I need to focus on that's circled in red. PS- Can anybody...

Any Transom experts here. I have a Transom Rebuilding Question.

One of the members suggest I put a good coat of chopstran fiberglass with resin on this bare transom first, prior to putting the new transom in with the peanut butter mix. I also thought it to be a good idea, and if so should I cover over the bowling pin cutout and the bolt holes also with the...

Gimbal Housing Studs for a Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1. Need the specific part # or size for these.

Yes I purchased the pair of lower aluminum bolts separately, which accompanied the dome anodes as well as the rubber washers.

Gimbal Housing Studs for a Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1. Need the specific part # or size for these.

Mission success, although I didn't need a Helicoil set, we were able to drill out the 2 snapped bolts in the gimbal housing (not studs) and then re-threaded it. However I'm wondering if I originally should have purchased the gimbal bolts instead of the studs, will it make a difference if I used...

    '67 Holiday 18' - Make it Usable

I'm going with the Rust-Oleum Topside paint on my boat top only. Further, I used regular Grey Rust-Oleum paint on my boat trailer and it held up really nice. I used two coats on the trailer.

Bought my first boat to cut, gut and rebuild from bow to stern, including engine. Killed my back and suffered the wrath of the fiberglass demons

I agree, I got my boat and trailer for free, luckily the engine was good. Needed some sterndrive work and transom work. But I agree with the OP I learned so much from this boat $1600 later. 🤪

Looking to Paint over Old Gelcoat.

Awesome, Can you post some before and after pics, I'd like to see how it comes out. I'm doing it this way also, but I'm not going to use a primer. Just some sanding and cleaning it down with mineral spirits etc.
