Most common problems with 4 cyl / 3cyl chrysler outboards

I just put in NGK BUHX plugs, the ones with the "boost gap", we'll see if they help.

Most common problems with 4 cyl / 3cyl chrysler outboards

Last time out it looks like my plugs are still fouling. Very frustrating, Seems unsolvable. 1 turn out on the idle mixture screws, carbs are clean and synced, ignition is right with new points, new coil and timing is right, recir system seems right, compression is between 137-140. Some say they...

Most common problems with 4 cyl / 3cyl chrysler outboards

So it sounds like it's a common problem from the factory with this motor. I'll have to experiment with how long it will take to run the motor till the float bowls empty out. I already have a fuel shut off valve so after the boat is load I could shut off the fuel and let it sit and run a little...

Most common problems with 4 cyl / 3cyl chrysler outboards

2 new developments, I cleaned the fuel recirculation system and reset the idle mix screws and now it idles very nicely with minimal fouling. Also, when it's warm out while out on the lake moving from spot to spot it starts right up with just a little tap of the ignition switch. So I'm loving...

    Fouling spark plugs

Nordin, this suggestion fixed it so far. The recirc screens had carbon on them (see attached pic). I cleaned it all up, put new gaskets on and immediately the idle was higher and so far after idling that would have fouled it before there is no sign of it. It seems to have better throttle...

    Tachometer for 1974 135hp

Here is the followup to this original post about tachometers. An automotive tach will work. I installed a $30 tach that was adjustable. I attached it to the normal tach location on the ignition switch and it works. No need for an expensive marine unit. Prolly because my motor has a distributor...

Most common problems with 4 cyl / 3cyl chrysler outboards

Seems like most people that own these motors say it's hard to kill them. In the last 5 years the biggest expense was a starter. Otherwise I have a box with the following parts in it. Fuel pumps diaphragms, distributor belts, spark plugs, points, water pump parts, impeller, lots of difference...

Most common problems with 4 cyl / 3cyl chrysler outboards

Hello, I would like my 1974 Chrysler outboard to last. It seems like one of the biggest challengs is finding parts. So I would like to plan ahead and start looking for various parts that are known to be needed. Please post things on the 4 cylinder and 3 cylinder (since they share many things...

    Chrysler engine overheating

My 1974 135hp had a rubber grommet where the pipe fits into the water pump housing. I changed it to the newer white plastic type that kind of funnels the the pipe into the right place. It fits nice a snug now. Also the thermostat housing is easy to remove to check it all out.

Do 1 piece lower ends fit older motors that came with the 2 piece

Will the 1 piece lower ends fit the outboards that came with the 2 piece lower ends? I have a 1974 135hp Chrysler outboard. I would like to buy a parts motor. I have heard the 1 piece lower end is much better.

Why would the electrode on a spark plug get smashed

How's this for a possible explanation. A piece of carbon deposit came loose and got between the plug and the piston. Now that seems likely.

Why would the electrode on a spark plug get smashed

If the plug was too long it does not seem like it would have run fine for most of the day but get smashed on the way back to the dock during an extended run at around 4000 rpms. None of the other plugs got smashed at all. There does not seem to be any slop in the piston, rod or crank. That...

    Winner manufacturer and parts

There is some very interesting information on this website. I got it from the patent# on the back of the hull. It shows wood in the floors. From what I can tell it's 1/2" plywood with fiberglass on the top and bottom on the floor. The transom seems like it has 3/4" plywood. My boat has plywood...

Best gasoline octane for old Chrysler Outboards

Yes all good points Redbarron. There is a really good video on YouTube on the Project Farm channel where he tested gas with ethanol and the non ethanol (REC) gas with and without fuel stabilizer. He found the stabilizer did not eliminate corrosion on aluminum parts with the ethanol gas. Also the...

Best gasoline octane for old Chrysler Outboards

The perfect question Redbarron. So far here's my math. It's a word problem. My favorite kind of math. Of course these are all theoretical figures. If I take one 20 mile boat trip exery week for 6 months (26 trips) and pay $4.50 a gallon for REC gas that would cost $1170 @ 2 mpg $720 @ 3 mpg and...

Best gasoline octane for old Chrysler Outboards

This is likely a no brainer but here goes. RECreational gas seems to be best for these old motors primarily because it's non-ethonol. Where I live REC gas octane rating is 90. My Clymer manual says you can run 87 in an old Chrysler. Of course the 87 around here is 10% ethanol so I have some...

Is this normal wear on a distributor belt?

Look at what I found on ebay. just got them today for Canada.

Is this normal wear on a distributor belt?

Thanks again for the tips. My guess is it's never been off. This might even be the original distributor belt. I'm thinking I just go for it. Like anything with really old motors go nice and slow and try not to force anything to much. One broken part and the whole thing can end up a boat anchor...

Is this normal wear on a distributor belt?

OK, So this looks like a worn out belt? I have read many bad stories about the flywheel being a real bear. You have to use heat, puller bolts breaking off in the flywheel, etc. All really bad things. I have also heard that the key is to put the puller, on tighten it up, and hit the flywheel with...

Is this normal wear on a distributor belt?

I know replacing this belt is a bear. I also know that if it break out on the water that will be bad and maybe even a vacation killer. So should I replace this belt considering what bear it can be to pull a flywheel that has likely never been removed?
