What's the fastest street-legal car you've driven

One evening, back in the 80's, I was at my parents. As supper time approached, we needed a few items. I volunteered to go to the store. <br /><br />A friend of my parents was visiting, and pitched me his keys saying “Here, take mine, I’m parked behind everyone else”. He had a very nice Monte Carlo or something. <br /><br />What I found, when I went to the driveway, was his brand-new Porsche 911 Turbo-Carera. Man, that was one wicked automobile.

In the early 60s drove a freinds 300 SL coupe, what a trip and in 67 I bought a Dodge Coronet R/T a differant kind of power, it was fast and tougher than tacks it came with a 6/60 warrentty thats better than some of todays 4 poppers---Bob

Bosss 72 Detomaso Pantera. Made to go fast, and it does. The 91 Porsche Carrera is no slouch either, different kind of power.

1967 Porsche 911 with a NOT so stock motor. It had been built for racing in Germany (where I bought it) and was barely street legal when I got it back here to the states in 1977. What a screamer though.<br />Went to a car show and swapped it for a custom built 55 chevy 2 door wagon. Vett 327 w/202 fueler heads, dome pistons, high rise manifold, yhaddy yhaddy yhaddy that wasn't meant to be on the streets either except for car shows on the weeknds. But was street legal. 10-25 and 50 dollared me to death trying to drive it back and forth to work. But was fun to drive.

Back in highschool I worked at the local video store - we had a regular that would come in all the time and I'd chat with him about his Firebird that was setup for drag racing ... Late one night a bunch of kids were racing up and down the parking lot in their hondas while this guy was in the shop - I teased him about going out there and showing them a REAL car ... he tossed me the keys and showed me how a manual/automatic racing shifter worked. Man that was cool.<br /><br />Another friend of mine had Mustang that was fast as hell .... not sure if it was street legal though and I never drove it.

Ford Escort mark 2...with a 3.1 litre supercharged V6 and a 100hp nitrous oxide kit.Manual box. Man that thing woulda been fast if I could have stopped the wheels spinning...wasn't mine though <br /><br />Handled like a slug on an ice cube tho.

My 69 Plymouth Hemi Roadrunner 426cid with 3:91 gears and a four speed. I paid 3200.00 in 79 for it sold it when I got married{chained down} for 4700.00. the headrest were there for your safety{ so you would not break your neck} not comfort. Today I could buy a house with that car now a days. The car was all 100% orginal except I got tried of smashing cigarettes against the dash when bangin'3rd gear I hated the Hurst pistol grip shifter I replaced it with Vertical gate shifter no need for the clutch in 2 3 4gear....

I got a chance to drive a ~600hp Viper around the track at PIR...I'm pretty sure the car was street legal.

I had a 93 RX7 twin turbo Mazda that was pretty fast, only kept it for six months before it got stolen and burned. Thief didn't even bother to strip it before torching the thing. After that I had to deal with the professional crooks, commonly referred to as Insurance company..

Porsche 928,(S I think)had a bunch of work done to it....MAN that thing was fast and held to the road like glue.I've wanted one ever since.

A 427 Cobra in 1967,(not the mustang) All muscle, mounted on a kite. One thought came to mind, "There's never a Lamborgini around when you need one" !

Sure would like to have driven the cars everyone has mentioned. I was never into the hot rods, mostly cuz I just couldn't afford it. My brother had a 76 Mustang II that he put a very beefed up 302 and C4 automatic in. Didn't handle real well, but it was pretty darn fast in a straight line. I got to borrow it on several occasions to cruise the strip in Anoka.

'00 Jaguar XJR Supercharged V8, 370BHP. 0 - 60mph in 5.7 seconds. A very fast yet understated type of vehicle - quicker than most Porche and HSV models...

1964 El Camino, still got it.<br />Has a 1973 built 350 with a rebuilt 400 tranny tied into the 6 cylinder rear end that came in the car.<br />Don't know how fast, but with the high speed rear end, it's pretty fast.<br />I don't drive it much, it's the wife's car and she knows that I like to let it "Breathe" when I drive it.
