I have been thinking about makin the switch, but the fluorescent light has the feel of being at the office.

I think they are getting more varied mike. My local electrical supply shop has a display with a bunch of CL's, all of varied light hues. You'd probably find one that suits you if you could see all the choices.

I reckon if you don't care how they look they would be a good go. But using a spiral tubed bulb in a bulb visible fixture, such as can lights makes them look like sheet. And Boom if your lucky they may ask you to speak at Al's Nobel Peace Prize acceptance ceremony. :p;):D:D

Re: What would Algore say?

We put recessed can lights in the new house and use cfl floods in them. We bought them at Big Lots ( better than the Dollar store but worse than Walmart for those not familiar) for like $3.50 for a box of 2. They work great except they have that 1/2 second delay of coming on. If I ever find them that cheap again they are going in the porch's too. I have a wrap around porch with 12 cans in it so the savings would be great there. We have a detatched garage/carport about 75' from the house. When i was doing all the wiring I ran the small backdoor light and the four florescent tubes in the carport together on a 3way switch. When the wife gets home at night she just rolls down her window and flips the lights on as shes pulling in. This turns both sets of lights on. She comes in the house and flips the switch to cut them both off, Works great as she has all the light she needs and actually will turn it off instead of running it 24/7.

Decent looking fixtures.Only burning them all night instead of wiring in infra red motion sensors in south Texas nine months out of the year would result in untold numbers of flying insects crawling on and in every nook and cranny of the exterior and soffets.

No lights on at my house at night. Here if you leave on lights, the bugs come, then the toads come to the bugs, next comes the rattle snakes after the toads, and I dont like Rattlers.

I think a light bulb and Algore mentioned in the same thread is sorta ironic..not sure why though....

Boom lives in God's Country: OB, He may not like the rain, (did we even have a summer this year Boom?)

Obvously not Boom, but I live in the PNW also. Yes, we had an awesome summer, to the point of the lakes and rivers being lower in some places than recorded history. That is the case were I live.

Out of my magnanimous actions and my devotion to your newly crowned guy, I suspect that your winter temperatures should drop a few degrees this winter.:p

I was waiting for this angle....with respect to 'the Gore'.
....who's next to wade in on this one?
Separately, I like the style of those lights tho'...sort of Arts & Crafts which is our house style. As for Fluorescent lights...only in work areas or outside, never in the house or direct living/eating/sleeping areas....completely hate 'em and that 'white' light, burns me out and makes me feel like I'm in Walmart.

Yeah thats it Bp. I couldn't quit come up with a genre for those lights but they were definitely crying out for a style title. It's kinda like a Frank Lloyd Wright type of architecture, aka American Craftsman, aka Arts and Craft.

Those days are gone, you can get them in many different hues now.

I too have replaced my bulbs with the flouescent screw ins. However, I resently read that these flourescent bulbs contain a high amount of mercury and should not be disposed of as one would discard a regular bulb.

When they make it easier to dispose of these things they foist upon us, I will be more conscious of their disposal. Another case in point, for many years I saved all my old dead batteries in a old Tide box. When the box got full, I presented it to my neighborhood recylce pick up driver. He said they do not take those so I just opened the lid of the trash can, sitting nearby, and dumped them in.

They force us to pay for recylce whether we want it or not and then will not take these common items that they say are bad to dump. S***w 'em, I say!
