I know another kind of race we could all do. You start with 6 gallons of fuel, then see who can stay on the move the longest at WOT. Now, there's a race I can participate in.

See signature for boat details; top speed I've seen was 65 MPH. Of course, that was on the trailer towing it home after I bought it. I'm still getting it seaworthy.

I am thinking my Lawn Mower with a propeller would do OK in that scenario . . . I'm in.

I'm thinking, though, that a lot of folks in this thread would not do so well in that race. ;)

Yeah, I am not entering the main squeeze . . . Right now I'm thinking Philster's the only one I'd beat with that one.

I was once on what they call a Phemaron (sp?) 120 ' naval ship. Once up on finns, we could do some amazing speeds. The finns would bring most of the ship 2.2 feet above the water allowing for less drag. One morning As we were cruising past a texaco cargo ship, she called over to ask if we were really doing plus 70 mph.

Check out this video of the new LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) we worked on, the USS Freedom. 3000 tons, 378' length, 57' beam. Top speed was clocked at "well over 50 knots" (57 MPH). Imagine trying to run away and this thing chases you down!

Design requirement was to exceed 47 knots in a sea state 3 (4' waves). Power is 2 Rolls Royce gas turbines(about 50,000HP each) and 2 Fairbanks-Morse diesels. Propulsion is by 4 Rolls-Royce waterjets.

The wake at speed is ridiculous. During testing on the Menominee River it washed a Coast Guard cutter up on the bank. The cutter (had been warning boats away) had been warned to clear the area before the speed run, but they advised Lockheed that they could ride it out. They ended up in the trees.

Re: What is your boat's top speed?

I have a Merc 4.3 V6 Alpha I for my Starcraft Islander. It averages 0 mph currently as it's up on blocks for the moment. I'm betting that isn't very helpful to your data collection though, sorry man!

Cheers!

we are well into the 2nd LCS build for locheed here in Marinette,wi., they putout 125,000HP with all engines on line, i was told they hit 80 mph with it during testing. they also swamped some fishermen on an island here, washed the boat ashore on to the rocks, and washed a bunch of stuff of the decks of a comericial fishing boat, the wake on this is different from other ships, about a 10-12 stern wake rather than from the bow

On my 19ft bayliner, with a 125 force, I hit about 35mph on a windy and wavey day.

'07 GXL 205 Glastron 20 footer weighing in at 3025 lb dry w/Bimini in full deployment, 2 adults, 3 children, Ice Chest, 30 gallons of fuel, aired up Mach3 Flyer 3 man tube strapped to the sun deck, in small to moderate chop.

My Volvo Penta 5.0GXi 270hp V8 with SS 21p prop cozied up to 51mph at 4600rpm and my trim was less than ideal. Still learning this Trim thing. was told right after that trip back roll up my Bimini next time if I want to keep it.

20ft Mark Twain open bow with a 233HP 351W gets us somewhere in the mid to upper 40's loaded with gear. Hoping to get to 50mph with the 260+HP 351W this year, but we'll see. Speed was on the stock pitot speedometer, so take it for what that's worth.
