Wow, some interesting carreers on this forum. In the 60's I worked several years for Grumman Aircraft doing aircraft sheet metal and also built prototype electronic equipment for the first Lunar Module, then several precision sheet metal job shops, then as a survey party chief, and finally I worked the last 31 years in civil service as a Traffic Engineer, now I'm 57, retired and it sure feels good after 40 straight years.

Pop and I started a screen printing company 15 years ago... We're both still there...<br /><br />For a little more than a year, I was doing double duty.. Marine mechanic by day, screen printer by night... Hours started getting to me doing both.. My pops health has been so-so lately and he wants to get away from the business so he can tote his lil' camper to bluegrass festivals (when the weathers cool) and travel more... So i'm back screen printing full time, again...<br /><br />I really miss being in a 110 degree engine room for 8 hours of the day, doing my contortionist acts crawling around in nasty bilges changing thru-hulls and seacocks, and the best fun of all was changing out macerator pumps..... YUCKEY!!!! But it was fun...

Re: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVIN'?

When I was a kid I mowed lawns and shoveled snow at the local hospital. I got my license at 16 and started working 2nd shift in a repair garage - mde more money than my teachers. Fixed cars, trucks, etc for about 10 years, then went to work in a factory. Assembly line 2 years, production planner 2 years, master shceduler 5 years, machine shop manager 2 years, IT Systems manager 4 years, then I had a brain tumor removed and couldn't hack the hours anymore. Went into Purchasing, then to Purchasing Director. Recently became unemployed in one of those corporate "reorganizations" now Purchasing Manager at the same hospital I used to shovel snow at! I'n thinking of buying a repair garage and trying to build some equity for retirement in 15 years.

If we all went into business together, we'd have the market cornered in everything!

Re: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVIN'?

Started out as a Car Wash attendant (Dad owned the car wash). When I turned 16 he said I had to work for someone else - so next 5 years worked at the local marina - pumped gas, captained tour boat, paperwork, maintenance, etc. Finished college and back with Dad - this time in the parts and service department of the family dealership, while volunteer work with youth at church. On to sales and then sales manager and eventually co-general manager before we sold the dealership and I could go into full time ministry. Now assistant pastor/administrator of home church and administrator of a Biblical/Vocational Training Centre in Ghana, West Africa.

Re: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVIN'?

Ok,<br />I was going to avoid this, but now I can't.<br /><br />I have had the same "job" for the last 18+ years. U.S. Air Force. I started as an aircraft electrician, then combined with the environmental career field and were called<br />.<br />.<br />.<br />electro-environmental<br />.<br />.<br />.<br />original huh?<br />Have I confused you yet? <br />The electrician part is self-explanatory. We are responsible for all the electricity generation on an airplane, the lighting, the ignition systems for the engines, etc. <br />The environmental part is the "air" side of the house. Air Conditioning, pressurization, fire protection, fuel inerting, etc.<br />For the last 13 years, I have been also a "Jack of all trades". I have gotten qualified on 5 other career fields. I do everything from turning on power to changing a tire or even an engine. <br />There is always something new to learn! That is what I love about my job.<br />For the last few years I tell people.<br />"I used to work on airplanes. Now, they make me watch people work on airplanes." I have moved to the supervisor positions, but would much rather be there getting my fingernails dirty.<br /><br />AK Chappy

First job, worked in a restaurant, dish washer all the way up to cook. Went to work for airline catering company. Igot the little bottles packaged for flights. Got into maint at the airline place. Worked for a motel in maint. Boss at motel sent me to AC/Refrigeration school. Stayed with them for about 4 years till I felt my debt was paid to him. Now I've been with this service co. for the past 22years. Working on mostly ice machines, but doing work on walkins, reachins, frozen drink, etc, etc. Never have really been bored with what I do since I never know where Im going to be from day to day or what Im going to be servicing.

Re: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVIN'?

My official title is Project Manager- Instrument and Electrical. I have two other people that work with me in the group. We design, specify, purchase, install, and commission safety and control systems for gas processing facilities. I've been with the same company for over 18 years (though not the same name). I make bits, bytes, and words change (PLC or DCS programming) and graphical human machine interfaces (HMI's) do their thing.<br /><br />My oldest son is an aircraft electrician (like AKFishingNut only he's just beginning his career) for the USAF. He's stationed at Hurlburt Field, FL and he works on the AC130H gunship. My youngest son is currently stationed at Vandenburg AFB. He's training to maintain ALCM's and CALCM's (air launched cruise missiles and conventional air launched cruise missiles).<br /><br />I listed their jobs because their jobs are more interesting :D Actually, mine is never boring. Just hard to describe.
