What do ya'll think?

I have a 1989 21 ft predator cc boat. When it was purchased it had carpet in it that was pretty beat up.

I went ahead and tore all the carpet out and painted the deck with a two part polurethane paint I aquired from a local boat shop.

I rolled the paint on and it looks horrible! It has cracks in the deck floor now!

My question is can I paint over that polyurethane paint? And if I could what kind of paint would I use?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Re: What do ya'll think?

Some pics would help, by cc do you mean center console or cuddy cabin?
Was the deck glassed under the rug?
The best paint is no good on unsealed wood.

It is a center console. It has glass under the carpet. It seems like thick woven fibers with resin under the carpet.

The underside of the deck seems like they did not glass it either.

Here are a few pictures of the boat painted. And a few of what the cracks look like.

Transom is stout so is the hull. I do not know how the cracks developed they were not there when I removed the rug.

I showed the local boat shop the pictures of the cracks and he said it signs of my deck starting to rott.

From what I can see... the stringers look ok. But I would not truly know unless I removed the deck?

What exactly are you looking at? Only way to LOOK at your stringers is to rip up that deck or start drillin holes...

It does kinda look like the wood is swelling and causing the cracks.
If it has soft spots its rot.
Don't you have any access hatches?
how do you get at the tank plumbing and bilge pumps?
Thats where you have to reach in with a small screwdriver and see if you can poke the stringers. Either that or use a skillsaw and cut out a hatch in the deck, set blade to 3/4" depth and hope you don't chop the wiring.

Rugs in a center console is strange unless its not intended as a fishing boat.

Re: What do ya'll think?

Another way to test integrity of boat wood is to take a small drill bit, drill a small hole into deck, stringer or transom and see if the shavings that collect on the bit are damp or dry. If you intend to do a thorough refit/rebuild and keep and use it for a long time, better do your homework on transom, deck, stringer integrity now. There are many threads in this forum on how it is/has been done successfully.

There is a access hatch in the rear of the boat near the transom. That is where I can check the stringers from. I would have to test everything rather than just looking and assuming it is ok.

I have the next to weeks off so I will really get into it. Thanks for all the quick replies guys! Updates soon.....

Re: What do ya'll think?

Ok. So I there is no turning back from where im at now. As you can see from the pictures I started ripping up the floors. They were starting to rot. And I cut into some stringers. But good thing I did what did b/c some of the stringers have some rot in them. So I will be redoing the stringers and floor.

I stopped where I did b/c , I do not know how to remove the platform in the front of the boat. Any one have any ideas? I think I have to remove the paint to see what is under it? I have been using the search feature on this forum to see if anyone has done this type of boat before but no luck.

Removing the floors were actually not that bad. It only took me 3 hours. To get where im at now. I figured it would have taken longer. Any questions , thoughts, ideas? This will be my very first project of this type. Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Re: What do ya'll think?

Hi
Well, you sure ripped her open. lol
I am not an expert in boats, but I am a professional carpenter and from what I see the cracks would be developping because of flexing. Your stringers don't look rotten (from the pics anyway) but there does not seem to be enough structure under there to support such a thing deck without any flex. I would suggest some cross bracing or a thicker plywood for the deck screwed down nice and tight.
That's my opinion anyway.
cheers

Hello TXY..

Are you saying the forward platform is a seperate part then the deck/cap ? .. can you remove the cap/fwd deck together ?

Re: What do ya'll think?

Some parts of the stringers are rotten. But I also wanted to replace them since im in it this far already. As for cross bracing and thicker stringers I was thinking about it too but did no know if it was ok to change it b/c of the weight.

Are regular stringers usually 3/4 plywood? If I were to make the stringers bigger and add cross bracing what would you recommend? :D

As for the front plat form it is one piece that can be removed. I started gettin into it with a grinding wheel and cut into the hull:eek:. I will get some pictures of it up a.s.a.p.

Everyone feel free to put your two cents in. All the information I can get on this project will be surely appreciated! Thanks guys!

Re: What do ya'll think?

Just post some pics of the cap off and we can go from there :)

Everyone cuts into the hull..sometimes nothing..unless you didnt know after the first 5 minutes :D .

Everything can be fixed...
