Re: Walmart's at it again....

There's a big difference between being "On Call" seven days a week, and being available to be scheduled to work any day of the week. Lowes and Home Depot,(to mention a few) have the same type of working schedule. They are not interested in 9 to 5 M thru F type employees. And as Stumpys stated over time is a big no, no with those employers. Gotta keep those costs down to insure our "Every Day Low Pricing", and draw in the customer. I do not agree with all of Wally Worlds polices nor do I frequent their stores but some times their pricing is hard to resist

Lowes and Home Depot pay a lot more money than Walmart. In Walmarts defense, they hire a lot of people that don't even seem to be fit to hold a job.

We purposely pay more money at other stores so as to not support Walmart. In other words, we put our money where our mouth is. We are fortunate that we make enough to be able to do that.
I feel sorry for the people that work there.

Anyone else (Bondo) see a strange connection here? :D

Does anyone else follow this policy... pay more for goods just to spite Wal-Mart? I am not saying that it's wrong, I have done similiar stuff, but I sure hope I never see or hear frog complain about not having enough funds to do/buy this or that! :D

This is a result of our want it now, gotta have it, 24/7/365 world. Is it time to revive the old "Blue Laws" for Sunday Retailers? I would sign on. Maybe families would then begin to know each other! Just a thought. Forget it! The $$$ loss would kill the CEO's.

I agree completely with JB. That story is written to cast Wal Mart in a bad light. If the store is open, they need people to run it.

I work every other week 7/24 oncall. I still do 40 hours during the oncall week. There are times whether oncall or not, I need to show up somewhere early or late. It is what my job requires.

At the risk of being a troll, I constantly hear people talking about jobs leaving the country. I dont like it any better than the next guy. When the workforce is put out by the requirement to actually show up during business hours, it really makes me wonder.

WalCrap is full of it, but in their defence people should find out who they are working for before they start. Of course sometimes the company makes it look like your getting gold but in reality your getting dog sh** painted gold. There are many reasons to dislike WalCrap{I worked there for 5+yrs}, but this doesn't really stand out as 1. The biggest thing to learn about WalCrap is watch out for the wolf dressed in sheeps clothing........

I agree with bringing back the "Blue Law", also. We the people have let this country start being led by greed as opposed to the family. I am in the military and I am truly oncall 24/7 and about half the year (if I am not deployed) I have to be on a one hour string which means no boating, no camping, no hunting, etc, etc., etc. I could choose to go to another unit and not be held to this standard but if I dont do it, who will? Prior to being in the military, I quit several jobs that had stupid policies or ones that I didnt want to comply with. They just hired someone who would do the job as they stipulated. Same with Walmart, it's their business and if you dont like the policies they set forth, find another job or suck it up and drive on.

More senaationalism journalism. If the truth doesn't fit the agenda-make it up. I've seen it FIRST HAND.

No wonder journalists suffer from the same reputation as lawyers and used car salesmen.

Besides, NOONE is forcing anybody to work there. If you don't like it-quit.

i don't want someone else telling me when i can and cannot buy something. i remember the blue laws and they made no sense. one way of slowing our economy down and limiting other people's chance at working.

this country is about freedom. freedom to work and shop where you want.

i doubt anyone ever said that working at walmart was great. shopping there is is closer to he!!.

this article sounds like crap to me too. all businesses have to staff according to volumes. that counts for call centers, retail stores, restaurants, etc, etc, etc.

as for parking away from the doors, i bet that's to let customers have the closer parking spots. again, happens all over the place.

Walmart is under assault from the organized labor proponents. The liberal media is just more than happy to oblige.

In my view, this is a free market economy and you as an individual are FREE to work for them or not. Why do non-organized professionals make more money? Supply and demand. Its not a club.

If Walmart has this policy, they may soon find that they will only attact the lowest of low workers that have nothing else to do. This may be bad for business.

Please don't tell me about Walmarts responsibilty to workers as this is a two way street. You don't like th deal, vote with your feet. That is your right of being FREE.

All the people breaking their backs getting into this country would aspire to work under this policy at walmart. They either come from places that plain don't have jobs or are corrupt and require most wages to be paid at the 'company store'.

My own opinion is that this policy is short sighted, but they have the right ot run the business the way they see fit. If the Union enters, plan to pay more for less, because that kid in HS stocking shelves will be making $20/hr. Way over what the job should be paying.

Ditto, rogerwa.

A job is NOT an entitlement. You have to WORK for it.

I know that does not "play well" with the socialist agenda that this country is so greedily eating up, to its own demise..

You will never hear me complain. If I can't afford something, I don't buy it. Also, I usually don't find the quality of what I am looking for at Walmart.

Originally posted by JB:
There are many jobs that require an employee to be available on reasonable notice 24/7.

I've had several.

That article is carefully crafted to make it sound like employees are on call to respond instantly 7-11/7. I really doubt that that is the case.

I think the policy is directed at the employees with a "set schedule" who fail to show up, or refuse certain shifts. Those employees need to work somewhere else.

Another example of how "journalists" can turn normal business practice into unfair exploitation.

I wonder how much that "reporter" got from the union for his biased and misleading article.
100% True JB.

I have worked in jobs where you are on call 24/7. All part of it.

Idiot media.

Ken

When this many hits come to a Corporation like Walmart one has to wonder what % of the hits are true. Like seeing one fly, then 10,000. There has to be some poop somewhere.

A "target rich" environment has nothing to do with the truth.

It's all "agenda" based.

Re: Walmart's at it again....

As a retail store manager I would not dream of putting staff on call but they have to be flexable ,one good turn deserves another,if they help me out when I am stuck I will return the favour . we have some retail chains over here who operate 0 hours contracts and whose staff must be on call all day but they get paid 40% extra than I pay my staff so if they sign the contract they must honour it as for walmart they operate as Asda over here and they are one of the top companies in the uk for looking after their staff I hope they dont think they will get away with their antics over here
