What is the other end connected to?

Salt away is a tee in the raw water line, back to a glorified windshield washer reservoir. Doesn't look like a salt away / neutra salt installation

It wasn’t connected to anything I bought the motor from a guy I believe it was connected to the lower unit. I plugged it. Let it run for about 30 minutes. It seem to be doing fine.

Only time I've seen a line like that from the exhaust cooling passage is for a dripless propshaft packing on an inboard/v drive or a hot/cold raw water shower

It'd be best to abate the barb and hose and just plug the hole

Page 463 of the Volvo Penta service manual shows the 98 model of the 3.0 has a hose to the riser from the thermostat block.

To add to the puzzle, it appears Volvo was making some various configurations for the 3.0 during the 90s. Here is the color cooling diagram, shows a version of the hose from the riser but this time to the exhaust itself.

And then a version plumbed to the steering cooler (mechanical or power). Good luck, interested as to which is most correct for your application/swap.
