Re: Thinking of trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

The kits will definately NOT come with the housings/bushings, just the seals. That is why it is important not to damage them in the removal step. Little scratch here or there is not big deal, the 847 helps.

The part numbers that you see from the original parts manual may have been superseeded by now, I would have to look at them to know for sure. I dont think the reseal kits include the o ring for the top of the drive shaft, but regardless DO go and get one brand new, you will thank me the next time you drop your gearcase.

Where are you planning on ordering your seals from?

I boats was just as cheap as anyone else. Although reading some other threads I my try napa if the shipping is free. So I hope i have the wording wrong here. I was calling the bushings the copper looking things I destroyed. Are those the bushings are part of the seals

Re: Thinking of trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

Nah what you destroyed was the seal itself. No biggie. The housings looked ok, from what I could see in the pics anyways.

The bushing was the piece holding the shift rod seal in place. It is not a consumable item, and will not be included in the kit. Only the seal (oring) itself will be included. If there is minor damage on the bushing that is no big deal.

Cool Thanks guys. That's what is was Hoping for HighTrim So the bushing would actually be attached to the housing, and thus what you were referring the 3m 847 to help with any nicks I may have put in the actual bushing. Gotcha. The prop shaft is real good the drive shaft I nicked just a little bit, but I will get some 3m to put with it. I'm going to try and get it ordered tonight. As well as look for the O-ring for on top of the water pump housing and the Impeller.

I soaked my lower unit gears in gasoline then scrubbed them with brake cleaner. While they where sitting on the towel I noticed some rust starting to show on a few pieces. It looks like it will be a week or so before I can get it back together ,and in some gear oil. Will they be ok or should I go ahead and get some oil and submerge them.

any rust isnt good, for the cost of a cheap quart of motor oil, id soak them , or spray with fluid film or similiar product.

Smear some gear oil on them, they will need some before the install anyways.

The o ring is at the very top of the driveshaft, just beneath the splines. It prevents water from riding up the driveshaft into the powerhead. Very important little o ring.

Indeed, it's always the little things that are so important. There's a fella in another thread dealing with a stuck drive shaft due to lack of o-ring right now. It should come in a standard lower unit seal kit, which you can get right here at iboats. A bit of vaseline on the 0-ring will help it slip right over the splines at the top of the drive shaft and reduce the risk of chaffing.

So the O ring that doesn't come in the kit doesn't slide all the way down to the top of the waterpump, but stays at the top just below the splines

Hello again cc. The drive shaft o-ring should come with a standard lower unit seal kit. It's sort of a medium sized o-ring that slips over the splines at the top of the drive shaft and seats in to a bevel beneath them about an inch to and inch and a half from the top of the shaft. You can't miss it. It's small, but very important little seal as it keeps water from entering the underside of the power head. As the drive shaft spins, the water in the exhaust leg actually "climbs" up the shaft and tries to get into the power head. Without that little o-ring, water will intrude and eventually cause the drive shaft to rust and seize up in the power head. You can get them out again, but it's a PITA. Glad you got all of your bits and pieces ordered, and great job on prepping your gear case. A light dusting of the zinc chromate primer and then a couple coats of paint and she'll be good as new. I wouldn't worry about the pitting. That's pretty normal after all these years. I suppose you could try using some marine epoxy putty to fill them, then sand it flush, then prime and paint, but that may be more trouble than it's worth. Regardless, NEVER use bondo as it will absorb water and only make things worse. Good luck. Keep us posted.
