Re: Thinking of trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

Thanks for the outboard books link. It appears what I thought was true. The Owner's manual and service manual are diffferant, and they sure do like the service manual. $73.02 ouch maybe one willl pop up on ebay soon. I got mine for the 69' evinrude for 9.50+2.50 shipping. super happy on that one as others for the same motor where 29 and 34 dollars. As long as I can read it I'll be good.

Marineengine.com; http://www.marineengine.com/ Has 10+ water tubes in stock for Your motor.
They have parts breakdowns for Your motor.
Those 18hp motors are some great motors.
Good Luck with it.

ccvolsdhf,

If you happen to live in FL, I have an old Johnson 18 that I bought just to get the prop. (Had to take the whole thing, but worth it for $25). I don't know the year, but it sure does look close to the one you have except white. I did pull a couple of screws off of it, but if you need some parts, let me know.

Re: Thinking of trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

Yeah no doubt i will need a few things that could really help. I'm in Tennessee, but Id be more than happy to pay for any shipping and kick back your 25 dollars.or whatever you may think is fair. I'm going to get a compression test right now, and planned on adding a parts list to the post tonight. for sure I know I need the water tube, and gromits to it,the carb, and airfilter on top of it, the front panel that connects to the carb and has the buttons or knobs on it. a coil or two, points, condensers(propbably should just get the last 2 new). Fuel pump. one of the clamps to hold the motor on.(dont know if that would come off or not). Heck I'd just offer to buy the whole thing from yeah but shipping would probably dig pretty deep. Well any help with some of this would be greatly appricated. just let me know. what we can work out

Thats an awsome little motor, I have a 68 'Rude 18hp, and it pushed me and my lil 12' glasspar to 23 mph. Strong little buggers, plus they are real easy to work on. Make sure you get some grade 8 bolts with washer to pull the flywheel. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Thinking of trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

So I took the lower unit apart, and it looks ok as far as the gears go they all look intack no pieces broken. Looks ok to me ,but IDK. The only thing is its just full of trash little black specks like dirt or something. I got some in my hand and sqished between fingers and it breaks apart so its not metal. Oil was bown kinda looked like Barbacue sauce( hope thats ok) So my question is. Is this all ok or normal and what is best to clean it all with.....Thanks

Jumping right into it, great!

Inspect the clutch dog teeth, it should have precisely machined edges, if they are rounded or damaged, it will need replacing. Lets hope not, its not cheap. Everything looks ok as far as I can see from your pics.

Clean the gearcase out, air dry with compressed air if you have it. Re oil as you reassemble parts. You will need some 3M 847 and a gearcase re seal kit. Did you get the shift rod seal (o ring) out ok? The drive shaft seal will be under the water pump, and the prop shaft seal you can now see. The o ring is garbage, it will be in the re seal kit. CUt the spaghtetti seal 1/16" overhang on either side, and cut it off square. If you need help with the re seal we can go into greater detail.

Re: Thinking of trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

OK I saw no seals anywhere, but will check. The shift rod will not pull completly out of the upper piece of the case. So the clutch dog teeth is that the ones you can see partially in one pic and then completly in the other. I'll look closer at them if so. I'll have to order the re seal kit tonight. And is the trash in there normal or at least ok as long as it's not metal? would you clean with soap and water or some break or carb cleaner?

Re: Thinking of trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

Hi cc. Looks like everything is ok in there. be sure to clean everything very well with acetone and a soft brush. the little black bits you found were probably old degraded pieces of gasket sealant (i.e. 3M 847 High Trim was referring to). Here's a link that can walk you through all the steps of resealing the lower unit. It will show you how to get to the shift rod seal High Trim mentioned as well. Most motors of this nintage should have a drive shaft seal, a prop shaft seal, a shift rod shaft seal, the pivot pin seal and the spaghetti seal. You've already done the hardest part by dropping the LU and getting everything apart. You can get a seal kit right here at iboats for about $25. An auto motive oil seal puller is also handy, but not always necessary. Don't be surprised if you have snip, clip and chip out the old seals. They can be stubborn sometimes. Just go slow and take care not to damage their housings. Lookin' good. Holler if you get stuck. Keep us posted.

Re: Thinking of trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

Ok found clutch dog it looks good all teeth are straight and fully intaked. I see the seals and o-rings on the diagrams but there either stuck on adjacent parts or gone for the most part. I'm still searching for the best thing to clean all this up with. Also removed the water pump housing took out the drive shaft and got the shift shaft out. The Impeller looks good. I'mguessing i need to replace it anyways?. Will post picks of all parts cleaned and disassembled once I find what best to clean with.

Parts cleaner, soap and water after, then thoroughally dry.

I use Acetone on the mating skeg surfaces before I install the spaghetti seal.

Dont worry, I have seen much, much worse gearcases before and they all cleaned up ok. There was definatley some water in there.

Re: Thinking of trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

ccvolsdhf,

I was thinking about some tools that you would need if you considered doing this on the side. I have rebuilt a '62 Evinrude 18 HP Fastwin and finishing up '70 Evinrude 25hp. I have found out the hard way on what things to have. Here is my list of must haves (not all are tools).

Basics
Set of Standard Wrenches. Try to find a thin set. It will help tremendously. I have a $25 set from sears that work great.
Socket Set. You can pretty much do everything with a 3/8ths set.
Needle Nose Pliers.
A good set of Screwdrivers.

Must haves
A set of Feller Gauges. 6.99 at Autozone. (and make sure they are Standard. Setting points with a metric set is very painful).
Spark Gap Checker. 7.49 at Autozone. (just a must have).
Extendable Magnet. 1.99 at Autozone. (for when you drop those screws under the Carb.)
Fixed Jet Screwdriver. (you can make your own)
Compression Tester.
Fly wheel puller (Harmonic Balancer Puller works great)
Air Compressor.

Supplies.
Paper Towels
Brake Cleaner (Parts Cleaner)
Spark plugs j4c or j6c
1/4 and 5/16 fuel line
Fuel Line zip ties
Ignition Wire 7mm Solid Core

And Most of all:
Time and Patience

A couple of other things I do. I use a large cookie sheet for any Carb work. Keeps the little screws and jets from rolling off the bench. Also great for replacing wires, points and condensers. I also started keeping a supply of stainless screws and washers. Hard to believe what some people will leave off of an outboard.

If you have any other questions just ask.

There is only a few things I want to keep, mainly the foot and throttle linkage. Other than that, make your wish list. Just depends on difficulty of getting the parts off.

I just checked UPS, and for 80lbs shipped ground it is ~$70. I think that is what the motor weighed when it left the factory. Just something to think about.
