Sorry bout that but thats how i feel. Bought a 1995 nitro 5/6 this yr and on my 6th outting in July found the top of transom cracked on each side!! Turned it into insurance co. and denied. Quoted around $4000 to repair/rebuild. Great ! First time owning a bass boat. Found out that a shop did work to transom in fall of last year. Im 3rd owner since and the first to have it in the water after repair was done. Next step, go after the shop. Have a marine surveyor that was hired by the insurance co. that says the transom is rotted and the shop just covered it up with new wood to hid the problem to make quick sale. Shoddy work. Dont know if i'll stand a snowballs chance in hell to recoupe in any way or not. So thinking ahead, how hard is it to do on my own now that i have time after losing my job in June on top of all this. Lol they say trouble come in 3's. Thanks.

You're right about the snowballs chance in he**. Just do a search on transoms / stringers here on iboats and sit back a read, read, read. It's not an "easy" project but doable. The nitro's are a bit tuff to get the cap off becuase they are bonded with epoxy at the joint and also have some serious tabbing to the deck and sides....

If you decide to repair it yourself....well...welcome to the madness. We're here to help in anyway we can.

Re: Transom... Screwed and tatooed.

Thanks Cadwelder. Have done somt reading on that. The guy who gave the quote said he would cut the width of the transom out down to 1" above the drain plug then reglass/recore gelcoat and paint. Are you talking removing the cap from the hull? And does the way he explained the way he would do it make sense? This guy has been in business for over 25 yrs. Was thinking doing it the way he discribed. What do you think? Thanks.

You're talking about cutting the outer skin along with it, or cutting just the cap back? Cutting the outer skin is not something I'd recommend for the novice DIYer.

First, find some dandelions and stomp on them! Is there one of those go for the throat lawers that thinks this is a good case? If not then look up "84 stratos renovation". What he did to his is probably what you will have done...or do it yourself. But which ever way you go GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!! We can't be there for you but we are full of it!.....advice!

Me. Cutting the cap back on transom and working on getting the wood out from the top side and inside of transom. Leaving the outter skin.

Okay, I feel better about that...you'll still have some cosmetic work, when you replace the cap section, but it's doable.

Let's us know how we can help....you got some work ahead of you.

I'll take some pics. so you can see this. The transom has been beefed up i would say its 3 to 4" thick. Didn't know this until it was explained to me that it should be 2" or so. Now to figure out how to post the pics when i do. I'll take them in the morning. Thanks Cad.

Looking forward to the pics. Take some of the overall boat and of course some transom shots. Maybe a good candidate for SeaCast? We're here to help. Turn lemons into lemonade and all that. :)

And a few more. As you can see in other pics of inside transom they put new wood over the rotted wood. Nice huh.
