Re: Transom... Screwed and tatooed.

Thanks Wood. I understand the importance of getting all the wood out inorder for the sea cast to work. Have done some reading on that product, also will check out the other two threads you've suggested. I know this is going to be a pain but the way i see it is slow and easy plus extremley anal on getting the rotted wood out. Probably will have more questions for you later if you dont mind. Again Thankyou.

We are here for questions....I've only had one experience with seacast and it was okay at best.....so not having the experience to rely on, I have to go by this forum and product literature. Most have good things to say about it. I'm just old school...I wish you the best...takes Woodys advice and make sure the transom is prepped properly.

WELL, ya all know the ole saying when it rains it pours! lol. Besides working on the boat the wife called from work after she got off and her truck wont start. So i ran out there and low and behold its the fuel pump, in the tank ofcourse. Looks like i'll be doing that today. Had to have it towed home and $300.00 later for the pump(UGH!!) Geeze what next.

Done one of those on my sons pickup truck. It's a small pick up and we found it easier to take the bed off and the pump was staring us in the face....only took about an hour to get the bed off and three of us carried it with no problem. The pump replacement was a breeze that way. Never done one on a car...best of luck to you.

You shouldn't need any fiberglass for that repair....;) ;)

Also look into Arjay 6011, it's a little cheaper and has ceramic reinforcement instead of glass strands like seacast. There are a couple of members on Bass Boat Cetral who have used it with great results. Judging from those pictures, your Nitro transom extends the width of the boat, and the "pods" to either side of the motor will prohibit you from accessing the transom on the sides. You will need to cut the rear part of your top cap to do this correctly. I wouldn't worry to much about splicing it back together, learn as you go and remember, EVERYTHING HERE CAN BE FIXED!!! I had to dry out and add CPES to the transom on my 1997 ChampioN, which I cought in time before serios rot had occurred. I cut the top cap around my transom to inject the CPES. I had NO fiberglass experience before this project, but I learned as I went. It took me two attemts, but it looks great now. Tomorrow I will be spraying ne gelcoat to the repairs. I purchased the right equipment and supplies for the job, which will make the job go smooth. Just read as much about the subject as you can and ask plenty of questions. You can do this, just do it the right way or all of your work will be wasted!!

Thanks Kerb. I'll check that product out. Ended up cutting the rear part just ahead of the pods to gain access to the whole transom. What a mess/sponge the wood is. And the digging starts!!!

Re: Transom... Screwed and tatooed.

Hey guys. Been awhile. Slow process on the transom. Have a question on replaceing the inner transom skin. Would biaxial mat 1708 be proper to use and how many layers? Also which resin (epoxy or poly)? Have read the threads that archbuilder & micks 110 posted. Once the skin is formed and set in i plan on tabing with with cloth tape. 4" or 6" which would be best? This is going to be a seacast pour for the core. Any suggestions? At the point where im doing the mind floping thing driving myself nuts. Lol. Thanks.

Another question besides the glass and resin for the inner skin. Ready to sand now i have the rotted wood out of transom, what grit do i need to clean up to ready for the glassing? Still need a suggestion on the inner skin forming. Thanks

use a r/o sander or 4 1/2" grinder and 36 grit. You need to re-read Archbuilders thread. He used Polyester resin. He has detailed pics and descriptions on how he formed his inner skin BUT... Your transom configuration is completely different than his and will need to be engineered differently since it is only the center section of the stern that is the actual transom. this makes things a bit more challenging.

Re: Transom... Screwed and tatooed.

Thanks Wood. Have read archbuilders thread. My transom goes from side to side. Had to cut the pods off on each side to gain access to the whole core. Wasn't able to save the inner skin. Just didn't know what mat to use for new inner skin figure the 1708 was the strongest to use. Arch didn't say what he used for mat other than how he did it. Thanks again.

That is CSM in the pic. I'd guesstimate 5-6 layers and about 2 - 3 qts of resin. Mix, Pour, and roll. One Layer at a time. No need to wait till it dries. As soon as the first layer is wet out, apply the next. I'm confused. The Stern of your boat is shaped like this...

I Believe your transom is only the Blue Area. Are you saying the Green area is there and the extended areas are blocked off so that you can build a skin the full width of the stern like the ORange indicates and pour the Seacast in there???

On my transom each side of the center is foam in the pod area. But my the old wood was in front of the foam from the green line down to the hull and the full width side to side. 84" wide.

Hey Spazzer,
This is Jon F from BBC. Wanted to pop over and check out your Nitro. Great looking boat! Too bad on the whole transom thing:facepalm: Good luck and would love to see some more pics.

Cadwelder - You said earlier that Nitro uses epoxy on the joints? Would you please send me an IM with some specifics? Im about to take the cap off of my Nitro in a few days.
