I'll take some pics. so you can see this. The transom has been beefed up i would say its 3 to 4" thick. Didn't know this until it was explained to me that it should be 2" or so. Now to figure out how to post the pics when i do. I'll take them in the morning. Thanks Cad.

3 to 4 inches thick? Man, I can't believe that is factory. Looks like somone just built up the splash well. What's going on in the bilge area (where the other two engine bolts are)

Dammit man!!! That's such a clean looking boat, and to have that kind of crap job done to it is just an insult! It doesn't even look like they used new wood for the jackleg splice!

They are kinda tucked up under splash well. And yes i did find out that the transom has been beefed up (made thicker.) But that was only to hid the rotted wood. As the pics show they put new over old inside. The jerks!!!

Re: transom cap

what kind of boat? Just a heads up, you should be ready to post some pics of the project. It's difficult to give pointers or advice if we don't know exactly what you're working with. When you can get some pics up and you'll get a ton of advice on how to proceed :)

THIS is a PRIME example of WHY you shoud keep your POSTS in one Thread. Your pics are in your other thread but by posting this arbitrary question outside of it, you have cause confusion. You need to familiarize yourself with the recommendations of the Forum and try to adhere to them.

Re: transom cap

I'm no expert but 1" might work? I figured with mine it would have been a lot more work doing it that way then taking off the top cap. Good thing I did because I found a huge issue with rot. Westex did a good job with his.

Goodluck!

Thankyou for the reply jrrenneker. Gonna go 1/2" on the cut. Your right it's going to be a pain in the rear but im not in the position to take the cap off. So i figure slow and easy going.

Re: Transom... Screwed and tatooed.

1/2" should be fine. Your Actual Transom is just the center section of the stern in the recessed area. What is your plan? Are you thinking of SEACAST? Are you going back with Wood? How are you planning on removing what is there? It does not appear you have any kind of good access to the area with out removing the cap. How do you plan on getting the new transom installed? Even with SeaCast you have to have an inner retaining wall, which you won't have and will have to build and secure some how. Have you searched the Forum on Transom Replacements to see if others have done a similar rebuild? This is a major undertaking and you will need to have a Plan in Place before you start.

That's my 2? worth.

Re: Transom... Screwed and tatooed.

Here's what im working with. A shop did a shoddy repair job to cover up rotted transom wood. They added two 2x6's to the inside of transom over the inner skin the width of the factory transom. Also they cut the splashwell back 1 1/2" away from where it meets the transom inorder to fit the two 2x6" on the inside. The 2x6's are glued to the inner skin then glassed over(what appears to be just one layer). I did start prying on this and seems like it will come off inner skin pretty easy. My thought is to get their crap repair job off the inside saving the inner skin then work on getting out the rotted factory wood from inbetween the two skins. I know this is the hard way but im in no position to remove the whole cap off the boat. I have some pics of transom on this thread. And yes i was thinking Sea Cast as a replacement. Sound like a game plan??? I have read up on others doing it this way. Any advice would be great. Also them adding the 2x6's made the transom 4" thick so i would be going back to the original 2 1/2". Thanks Wood.

Re: Transom... Screwed and tatooed.

Okay, I know you don't want to here this, but I really think you need to remove the cap on this thing. Are you sure the only problem is the transom, unless I've overlooked it I don't see any mention of the stringers and deck.

As far as the seacast...well to me that's just a patch (now I'll get some arguments here, but I can take it) The boat was built with a 1-1/2" thick plywood transom (two pieces of 3/4") and this is the way it should go back. If you're good with fiberglass you can just remove the rear section of the cap and then glass it back together (not my choice method, but many have done it here).

The 2 x 6's is just what you said "a patch" and a lousy one at that, but whatever the case you need to repair it back the way Nitro sent it out. So you may have noticed I'm not big on patches, my way is certainly not the easy way out but I feel is the best way. Bottom line is it's really up to you.

The guy/shop that gave the estiment to fix did test drill the stringers and floor from the transom back and came out good, no rot on them. And i've done glass work before but that was on my scull boat for duck hunting so nothing pretty. Dont feel confident to do it on the outside of boat for that factory look. Thats why im willing to twist, bend and darn near kill myself to keep from taking any part of the cap off other than the transom part. That area doesn't really concern me as far as looks.

Re: Transom... Screwed and tatooed.

Cadwelder IS the Bassboat guru here on the forum. But if you are set on Seacast then your plan should work. I KNOW he is NOT KEEN on Seacast but I do KNOW that it IS a good and SOUND product and will provide a Strong and solid transom IF, BIG IF, you install it properly. The KEY to Proper installation is to get ALL and I mean ALL of the OLD rotted wood out of the cavity. This can and will be a daunting task. I would strongly recommend you look up and read Archbuilders thread and Micks110 thread. they both did seacast transoms and did excellent jobs. You will learn a lot.
