Over dramatic but just my thought on need to cut smaller on the inside. I know nothing much of how to do what your doing

Not sure . . . I did not measure any difference in the pattern width. Perhaps Formula uses heat to pre-form the shape before assembly to the cushion. :noidea:

Here are a couple more helm seat design iterations . . .

Maybe #3 would be the better of the two . . .

#4 would be interesting when you have had a few coctails...

what is wrong with the whole bottom being simply white (losing the green all together)

Helm seat base . . .

This is the helm seat base which swings up to provide a higher vantage point for the captain (me) . . .

I used the original vinyl pieces, as with the helm seat top piece. So, far, so good.

Here is the seat and the skin ready to be attached.

Here is a look inside the skin, showing the tack-down strap that goes across the middle of the seat.

I'll be assembling the vinyl to the seat tonight.

I got the other helm seat base done . . . similar to the captain's flip-up seat, but no flip-up.

Now getting ready to do the remaining 2 pieces of the helm seat. I am still playing with some design options and came up with this one . . . less green not as radical a design. Might be easier to make.

I started to work on the mid-section of the helm seat. Here is the center panel, which will form the backrest portion of the seat.

Very Impressive work. I Just made a cover for my friends center console seat, It was only 3 pieces no foam on the vinyl, I was pleased with the way it came out considering I had never done it before and my machine is only a medium duty consumer grade. I find this type of work interesting and rewarding. A few years ago I had to rebuild the wood structure of my Sundancer's helm seat but was able to reuse the vinyl. It was fun winter project.

Your boatt is going to look new again!! Have a great rest of Sunday

Ted, what is your procedure for gluing the foam to the vinyl? Do you do it in a large sheet at one time and then cut your pieces to your patterns or do you cut out your vinyl and then attach your foam?

I do about 1 linear yard of vinyl at a time or less, depending on how much is needed for each skin. I use 3M 77, which seems to work the best of all the adhesives I've tried. Then I cut the pieces from the 'foamed' vinyl after the adhesive has set up/dried.

Quick update . . .

I've been working on the center section of the helm seat, which has the redesigned pattern that I showed above. This particular skin is taking me to a whole new level of sophistication, and I have been struggling to figure out how Formula makes these things in the first place.

The helm center section (i.e. backrest) skin is basically 3 pieces joined together . . .

1) There is a top piece shaped like the outline of the top of the backrest
2) There is a bottom piece shaped like the bottom backrest (which is more elongated in some areas than the top.
3) Finally, there is a 'wrap-around' piece that is made up of all the colors and shapes.

Since this 'wrap-around' piece has to be sewn to the top and the bottom pieces, the length around the perimeters have to match the distance of the wrap-around piece

If they don't match, then there will be problems sewing them together . . . sorta like having a Tupperware container with the wrong size top . . , ain't gonna go together

So, far I got the top piece to match the wrap-around fairly well . . . by some miracle, not sure how I did that. Now I have to try the the bottom piece, which should be a bit easier, since it has cuts in it, which will allow me to take up or add slack to the fit. The top was a single large piece of vinyl, so it had to match the wrap-around piece exactly.

Anyway, I knew the helm seat was going to be a challenge, but had no idea it would be such an exact science in putting it together. My hopes are that the final skin will be a slight bit under sized, so it can stretch to a tight fit going on.

We shall see. I'll post some pictures later on.

I'll be stapling it tomorrow. This one was pretty difficult to make. The color combo came out OK though IMO.

Great look on the redesign - a nice compromise of your other concepts. I think that color combo will be helped by the white seat against it too. Gonna' look great.
