Ya - what I was saying. Sometimes what you want means taking a drive....

Ok - that's just twilight zone. He won't take a Visa card number and mail you a hose??

Nope. He works in Bizzaro World......

Ok, hose is on the ground in front of me. The damn thing is cracked in 4 places and was obviously installed cracked. **** poor workmanship.
I am going to take it to an ag dealer to get it repaired if possible. Why should Mercruiser profit from their own shoddy work.
The gaskets look good. They should since they are new. I don't think a little oil will hurt them.
But a bigger concern is oil all over the back of the motor and whatever else is back there. This is where the smoke I mentioned earlier was coming from. How in the world am I going to clean up that oil?
Could it be a possible fire hazard?

Wow!! It keeps going. You are a way more patient man than most. But you are not alone. A neighbor/friend recently bought a new Smokercraft Phantom and is having issues that are smaller in scale, but very similar to yours. Paid over 20K for a boat that had so mnay leaky rivits he thought he left the plug out. 3 Trips to the dealer later, he's got it down to about 2 cups of water per 4 hour jaunt.

Maybe your situation, and my neighbors are isolated incidents, but it sure seems to be popping up more often than they should. I agree that the art and pride in craftsmanship in american products is at an all time low. What a shame, with all the technology available these are the products that are making it to the showroom!

Good luck getting back on the water. I also live in an area with a limited boating season, and every weekend missed brings you that much closer to the end of the season. Sucks!!!

This whole episode is not exactly turning into great publicity for the quality of Starcraft boats...

I'd pick up a bottle of mild pressure washer degreaser and put it in a spray bottle. Spray everything down good then rinse with the hose and repeat.

Re: This new Starcraft Islander is bringing me down on its first splash...pics!

At least when Brunswick owned Starcraft in the late 80's Starcraft had this huge conglomerate standing behind them.

Check out the brands that Brunswick owned. http://www.brunswick.com/brands/marine-boats/

When I bought my Lund Brunswick who also owns Mercury were forcing the Lund dealers to only use Merc's and other accessories owned by Brunswick. So independent dealers (like the one I bought from who had been in business 30 years) started dropping them and selling other O/B's like Yammy and Etec's.

Then in 1996 Brunswick sold Starcraft back to one of the Son's of the original owner. I figured it could go either way from there. Either the Son would try and resurrect Starcraft to it's former status as a manufactuer of great quality aluminum boats (the company started as a manufactuer of aluminum tanks) or it would go the other direction and the Son would buy it back and milk the Starcraft name as he ran the company into the ground. Like the OP's problems allude to it sadly looks like the Son has no interest in moving Starcraft forward.

But being the last of the Islander model (and as the op said his might have been even the last one) I'm sure as workers were getting pink slips . . . Quality, was not on the forefront of the last few boats they were working on.

The failing economy and up and down gas prices have been killing the boat business. Most brands have lower levels of quality with their workmanship as I'm sure they are hiring people who are working for much less money than the good years.

Still, the Islander is a great design and a fine riveted boat. Starcraft has turned out many boats which has had the paint blister. Some issues were caused by electrolyisis of some sort and Starcraft had to re-paint them. but this happens with cars too. I had a new Buick Regal many years ago and the paint practically fell off.

I've been in the market for a newer Islander with an OB since 2008. First I needed to upgrade my tow vehicle (I've been towing my Lund with a 4 cyl Saab 9-5 since 2007). I'm upgrading to a Toyota Highlander with a tow package. So I need to stay with aluminum.

If the O/P's rig was an O/B I would buy his rig from him in a heartbeat. I might have to drive out towards the West Coast from NY to find the model Islander I want.

Like the OP has already said. . . He wanted new to eliminate the headaches but with then quality of many American companies workmanship with most decent brands it 's going to be a work in progress getting it up to where you want it to be and most of the work done by yourself. But isn't that why most of us love boating? There iis always something to tinker or improve with our rigs.

At least you are starting with a great design and the engine is a Merc (the number #1 seller of marine engines) which is great for re-sale.

I plan on getting the same boat as yours, but still keeping my Lund too. Get the hose fixed, relax and enjoy the rest of the season.

I never read your other thread about your paint issues, didn't have to as it's been a known issue for years with some Islanders.

If you don't already have enough to think about, your picture of your transom with the tie strap going around to the side of the boat and then attaching to the trailer..........I didn't see the trailer bunk!!!!!!!!! You know the thing that supports the hull and since this is an I/O, there is a lot of weight back there. If that bunk isn't under the transom, and preferably beyond....and by the way offers a place to put your tie strap without rubbing the paint off the side like you have now, you can develop a hook and possibly cause the transom-bottom rivets to start leaking........

Sorry,

Wow, didn't know that. Here is a pic of the back of the boat before the transducer was installed. The bunks extend to the back of the transom and there are eyelets for the tiedowns.
The boat came with the tiedowns on the side when I picked it up from the dealer so I assumed that was the way to strap it down. But I guess it isn't the best way.

I went to a few places and one specialty shop and this fitting cannot be replaced. The only option is to make a new hose and that would cost the same as the Mercruiser hose.
Iboats has some aftermarket hoses in this part number and I may order from here or on ebay. Either way it will be quicker than waiting a month.

You certainly shouldn't have to put up with defects like that on a new boat, but if it were me and I were looking for a temporary fix then I would just get a typical adjustable hose clamp and tighten that sucker down on the flat part of the fitting that is cracked. I see no reason why that wouldn't hold for awhile without issue.

A worm drive clamp will never be able to apply enough pressure to that busted fitting to stop a leak that is under hydraulic pressure... A t-bolt clamp, mayyyybeeee. But I doubt even one of those would work. And I don't think they even make t-bolts in sizes that small.

Maybe slather it in some sort of sealant first, but if my choices were to either give it a try or wait a month watching from shore then the choice is easy. The way I see it, that hose is gonna be a throwaway anyway. Nothing can be lost by trying.

My .02 - order the mercury part and have it shipped next day, then turn the bill in on a warranty claim with mercury. Or alternately call merrcury and see if they will send you out one.

Re: This new Starcraft Islander is bringing me down on its first splash...pics!

I found a hose in the city thats pretty close to where I live. The hose and trim fluid were $140 and mercruiser made money off me as their parts seem to have a 2 hour lifespan. But this is my choice as I don't want to wait a month for mercruiser warranty. But my big beef is with starcraft for installing this cracked hose to begin with.
But I digress....
This hose is not going to go on easy. I spent 2 hours tonight and am no further along. The cord I was using got cut on something sharp so now I can't pull the new hose through from the bottom as I had planned. I am going to have to devise a way to run this hose as its impossible to reach back there. Maybe a piece of cable could be threaded until I could grab it? This boat is driving me nuts...at least my wife is used to me working on the other boat every night.
I may fix this boat and then sell to someone who can appreciate it. After it's repainted of course. But we are having some wicked weather here today and tonight. Tornadoes, large hail, the works. Maybe mother nature will take care of this mess for me.

I called mercury, they will not send you out parts or reimburse you. Thats what the dealers are for. They really don't care how long you have to wait at your end. Its bound to be busy in the summer.
I did call the dealer I bought from though. The parts man wouldn't even give me 1 cent of list price even after I explained my situation.

Wow. What a thread! Lots of pertinent comments. No need to repeat. Almost all good.

First, Mercruiser. Their equipment is OK, but hate the company because they will not deal with the end user. Have to go through an authorized dealer. But, they are everywhere and should take on warranty repairs (since you are more than xx miles from your dealer). But remember, their customers that bought their boats from them will get priority over you. You got the bat you wanted. Wasted time offthe water is one of the costs of that decision.

Next, new boat. I have bought 2 new boats. Each time, in the first year, I had a list 2 pages long of warranty repairs. So new boats will have problems too. BUT, those problems were spread out over a year. Yours came all at once on your maiden voyage.

Third, Starcraft. Anyone that reads this thread would be likely to find another brand. As far as their value going up... never if their quality is this bad

Lastly, are their any consumer protection laws were you live. I would find out.

I wish you all the luck going forward. You will get the problems sorted out and then you can relax and enjoy your boat.

Sea ya...

I know.
I have a new plan on routing that hose. I am going to zip tie (loosely) the end of my replacement pressure hose to the return line. Hopefully it will follow that line. If that fails I will zip tie a cable to the return line, pull that through then tie the cable to the new pressure line and zip tie the pressure line to the return line then pull the cable and the line through.
I am working blind and I may borrow a bore scope to see what exactly the opening in the boat goes into.
